I like the advanced version, but if its too much work for devs, I'd be satisfied with simple version.

Map Preview
« on: October 08, 2008, 07:40:16 am »
After playing a lot on Leo's servers I have a big collection of maps used there; some of them I like and some of them I do not like. One time I wanted to set up my own server with my favourite maps only, but I failed to find them among other, because I do not recognize them by names, but only by their looks.
Then an idea came to me: it would be nice if we could see a miniature of a map when we point mouse on its name when serching maps list. A simple version of this feature, not hard to code I think, would be simply a minimap displayed when mouse is pointed over map name. A more advanced version would be a real image of whole map (minimap doesn't show scenerys, textures etc) scaled down to fit Soldat window [edit] or a screenshot, chosen by mapmaker or by user, as was suggested below [/edit].

F12 - would only needa generate the image once, and then it could save the file.. possibly pressing f5 while viewing screenshot == regenerates it

Do you mean assigning a screenshot as a map preview? Yeah, that'd be nice also.

F12 - It could be done like UT, it is up to the mapper to make a screenshot/picture that represents that map, and just have another folder called previews or something.

generated previews wouldn't work since hm it defeats the whole purpose of it (which was seeing non default maps which wouldn't have an associated preview) <- unless of course the generation of the preview is done each time the map is loaded && the preview file doesn't exist

not sure how much it'd take to take a preview screenshot and save it to an img tbh

<@mar77a> is it really that hard to get
<E_A> i get the second part following the arrow
<@mar77a> well
<@mar77a> if previews are generated
<@mar77a> (not on the fly but stored)
<@mar77a> you would download soldat with default maps with overviews
<@mar77a> but the guy wanted to check the custom maps
<@mar77a> which you wouldn't have overviews for
<@mar77a> get it now?
<E_A> yes
<@mar77a> ok
<E_A> so you're saying that the preview generator won't work because of that?
<@mar77a> i'm saying it should generate them on the fly

That wouldn't be a problem, because when you download a map, it would come with a preview. Just like how maps come with textures.

I can make a maplist generating program that shows overviews of maps when you select them (just the simple kind, no shading/scenery, with objects) in an hour or two. Would anyone use that? That's not quite what you were talking about, but its similar.

That would be good for dedicated server owners. Might as well make it if it only will take you 1-2 hours

If I undetstood correctly, that would be very nice, I'd gladly use it!

Yeah, nice idea. Because it is mine!
Haven't you seen this topic? It is just about the same idea.

I can understand that people post again ideas that were discussed some time before, especially when they had been discussed in topics without reasonable titles, like "new ideas and stuff". But this is ridiculous, lol!

Mods, please merge this topic with the one I mentioned above :P

But now, let's think... you came out with the same idea... you must like it then... so come to my thread, post comments and vote in the poll, your support will be appreciated ;D and also your screenshot explains this idea nice, it could be useful ;D

If it gets in, it won't be attributed to any one person, except maybe EnEsCe. lol.

It's entirely possible, IMO, cause you do have the minimap, so why shouldn't this be possible. :P

I wasn't jealous about the idea. Maybe i put it in wrong words.
Thing that worries me a bit is that double topics like this create chaos in this board - it would be better if discussion was held in one place.

However, if I offended anyone, I apologize.

Anyway, is it possible for mods to merge these threads?

[EDIT] topics "map view (simple and useful)", which was beginning with wolfbr's post, was merged with "seeing a map preview when creating map list" started by me. Thanks! [/EDIT]

Thank you very much, ElephantHunter and SadistAtHeart! This solves everything.

Do I understand correctly that when topics need to be merged we should ask admins directly, because only they can do this?
