Ditch karma.
« on: September 11, 2006, 08:41:43 pm »
It just makes people feel like crap. Either that or get rid of smite and keep applaud. So you can't just smite someone for the hell of it.

Good reasons to ditch it:

-Its abused

-Another status symbol like post count (who needs more of these?)

-With the amount of retards and kids this website cradles, can you expect fair usage of it?

I agree, the game is crap with karma around.  If we get rid of karma, maybe the gameplay will become more fast-paced. [/lol]

This doesn't belong here, eh?

It is getting abused too much. I mean, Dascoo has like -9057109578 something points and he didn't even deserve the bad rep. :-\ Mine's always 0 or -1, no matter how nice, helpful, or contributing I am, and it's just proving that poeple will smite even if they disagree with them on something, or if they don't like their sig, or something else not worthy of a smite. :|

Well, anyway, I've been getting alot of smites meself, but as long as it's >0...

Mancer, this thread belongs to the Forum News and Support board as it centers around the forums and not the game, but I suppose you could care less.  I don't care, it's just FYI.

Well sorry, I mean I always considered the stuff at the top of the page just to be general discussion, aka, talk about anything (kind of like SomethingAwfuls general discussion)

Doesn't bother me, its a subconscious mentality thing for everyone else.

Don't tell me you wouldnt be suprised if you woke up and found that you got smited 20 times. Even if you didn't care you'd still be like 'wtf'

Well, FLAB semi-recently said in a karma discussion thread in the Forum Support section that karma's a mostly accurate public-indicator of the usefulness of your posts. It seems to shift for select random people (Twistkill & E_A, here; Vltava's, I have no idea how it sunk into double-digit negatives so quickly especially considering his posts' quality), and the effect is greatly exaggerated (people boost FLAB just for resembling a flying brick, and those whose posts are useless one-liners have more negative karma than raw Post Count), but the general idea is that it can help steer non-contributive people into being more productive in the forum.

I think my current karma's influencing my opinion, heh, :P but I don't think it'll be modified whatsoever unless karma starts getting out-of-hand for the vast majority of members instead of just fluctuating or bloating unnecessarily for various few. Even I myself highly recommended some sort of personal log for who altered your karma for what post, but that has not been implemented—whether it's possible or whether FLAB just plain thinks it'd be worth the coding investment at all eludes me.

So far it's "okay" IMO; I can't say the forum would be very better with it removed, or with it staying around, but I think some sort of slight modification should be made to it, if SMF allows flexibility with its coding.

My current karma was due to Evil-Ville's previous signature (for about a day), that had an attractive link, which when clicked, smited me. It's staying down because people tend to smite almost automatically when they see bad karma. It doesn't bother me too much. I almost never smite, but often applaud deserving people.

I agree fully, I have no reason to get smited, unless I said something stupid?
I have done nothing to deserve like -17 karma

I think if we want ot change anything, we should just remove the smite button.

A 1-way system will work fine still.

Then you'd be at 0 and still feel shitty. Just abandon the smite button or get rid of the entire system.

I vised the forum after karma went into effect and already had -2. The consept is reasonable but there has to be a better way of doing it.
