What graphics card would you reccomend?
« on: May 09, 2007, 09:51:32 am »
Can't use my onboard graphics anymore, because it's starting to fry. I just got an internal error a few minutes ago because of it. This means I need to get a new, cheap graphics card. $50-$120 at max. kthxbai

Hi,

Alright, what graphics socket do you have? (PCI-Express x16,  AXP 8x, ...)
What processor and how many RAM do you have available?

Nvida ftw.
To sum up my point: We had a multipage debate about toilet padding. (Putting TP in the water so you don't get splashed.)
And we still don't know if dead guys can keep a stiffy.

You should seriously think about upgrading your RAM to at least 512 mb, preferably 1 gig.

Alright looking at your stats you will mainly be looking for a graphics card with alot of video memory. This way you're sure that you're RAM will not be used for video memory.
There really is no winner between nVidia or ATI, it all depends on the type of card you need and what manufacturer you're using.

Also, by looking at your processor speed I advice you to buy a card which is at maximum 75$. Cards above 75$ will almost definitely have no diffrence in performance between those under 75$ on your system. Also, it's not useful to look ahead and buy a good graphics card so you can use it with a new PC. Since DirectX 10 is coming, it is best to wait a few months after the release of DirectX 10 before buying a new graphics card.
Yet another thing, I expect graphics cards to have multi-core processors too very soon, just like normal processors. For the time being I'd just wait until those multi-core solutions have finally settled.
Right now is the worst time to buy new hardware for your PC.

I believe he probably has 512 mb, but his graphics card is using up some memory.....for example, I'm at 448 mb because my intergrated card is taking up 64 mb.....

I'm not some hardcore 1337 gamer that wants to run 3 copies of Crysis at the same time. I just need a card to get me by for the time being until I can put together a new computer.
