After a long wait and a delay of one month it is finally there: Soldat 1.7.0!
This is the first major release since Soldat 1.6.0 which came out in September 2011 and
the second major release for the Soldat dev team!

In this release the client enjoyed some major graphical updates and bug fixes.
On the server side most changes are script core changes and again bug fixes.

Bye bye Directx8. Hello to OpenGL!

New OpenGL based renderer brings great performance and smoothness improvements
like you haven't seen before (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Vfvid5T7OI)!

(https://static.soldat.pl/images/soldat170_performance_improvements_thumb.png) (https://static.soldat.pl/images/soldat170_performance_improvements.png)

Using OpenGL instead of DirectX also allows for decent gaming performance
on Linux & OS X
systems using Wine, Parallels, PlayOnLinux or similar software.

We also implemented high resolution text rendering (https://static.soldat.pl/images/soldat170_ctf_ash_text.png).

If you had trouble running previous versions of Soldat - now it's a good time to
give it another go.

Soldat 1.7 supports up to 4K UHD resolution (3840 x 2160) natively
allowing for much higher quality graphics.

That's why we have spent hundreds of hours polishing and remaking
sceneries, player models (gosteks), textures, weapons,
maps, interfaces and other visual effects in HD quality.

Much of the graphics have been completely remade, and more is yet to come
in future releases.

There's a whole truckload of smaller changes and improvements to
various aspects of the game
, including improvements to modding,
customization and more
.

For instance, screenshots are now saved as PNG and can use a
different resolution for rendering.

Support for windowed fullscreen was added and we have also reverted to
the netcode of 1.6.8 to fix the lagspike issue which happened in 1.6.9.

A big thank you to everyone in the dev team who helped with this version
especially urraka for rewrite of the renderer, bug fixes and changelogs and
falcon for helping with script core changes and debugging.

Special thanks goes to the people who worked on the graphics remakes:
L[one]R, Monsteri and daaw, MrBungle and everyone who helped with mapping,
evhO and the translation team for keeping the translations up to date and
Last but not least I'd like to thank Furai for keeping our backend up to
date and doing all kinds of other tedious work ;)
And everyone else I forgot.

This new Soldat version might introduce some issues with old mods.
We will soon provide a compatibility mod.ini file to fix this,
along with full documentation on how the new modding system works.

This new version is by far the biggest upgrade Soldat has ever had since its inception.

Congratulations to Shoozza, urraka and all the people who participated! You guys are awesome!

Well, new vest will have to wait until the next version I guess, but if anyone wants - slightly tweaked version is here (http://forums.soldat.pl/index.php?topic=44181.msg526158#msg526158).

Nice to see 1.7 to finally see the light of day. I hope it'll be received well by other players despite the yet unfinished transition to HD.

Good Job, everyone. :)

About HD, what happen with that map look up, that shoozza showed up in alpha2?
{ http://i.imgur.com/JZbO4ZT.png }

Even one map would be cool to play and show some fresh look that could potentially gather players and keep existing ones.

Maybe an antivirus getting in the way. They tend to do that.

Well, I do. Back then the game still had a quite large and active community, now it's beating a dead horse. Nobody cares but a few dedicated fans like us here. Of course, 80 ppl online atm is enough to have some fun, but it's just a shadow of how it used to be. The Lack of visible enhancements and promotion drew the majority of players away.

To change the tone a bit, I played for a while and it's amazing. It almost feels like a new game now. A lot of work has been put into this and I greatly appreciate it.

this does seem great and i'm definitely gonna give it a go but i have to agree that public servers seem so empty now (24 servers online with 60 players playing) that it takes a miracle to get this game up on its feet again. :(

but i do respect the devs for all their hard work and dedication, and it would be great if the game gained new players and activity now. soldat is still one of the best games around.

It's still far from ideal product, and to be honest it's more like half way of work for now.
But it's amazing job and we can't say anything else that good job.

Now everyone, and especially people behind game should do nothing more than focusing on advertising, because if anyone from you had any business, you should know that half of work and resources are putter to make it visible everywhere. Because without it you can work your ass off in this project and end with game played by few friends once per week.

Send some info to small and big game portals internacional and local. Send game and info to portals with online/flash games because they always look for fresh content. Write about it on game forums make some small ads and basic overview of game prepare few nice screenshots and spam about it. Yes spam on social mediad. mention it anytime enywhere. Because this is how this world work and without it you can only pray for fresh player base. Even without money for adverts with good plan and help of game portals you can make small hype that would help game getting attention.
This game have too big potential to die.

^ This.

Just make people want to play this game. Bring some new kids to it. There's a whole new generation of people who love such small indie games and would most definitely play it.

You can also add weapon skins and microtransactions xD Better not.

Amazing job, out of words.

I just want to ask Shoozza something: I remember you said there was going to be a integrated anti-cheating system within the 1.7.0. I absolutely loved the new HD graphics, but besides everything, I want to play a fair game.

Thank you all devs and contributors for making this possible!

Yeah anticheat developer (Mr) told us he has no time for this anymore. I'll have to talk to him again about possible solutions since people keep asking. Another thing people as for is:
SOLDAT FOR STEAM!

And of course weapon mod changes. I guess we have to add some optional weapon stats collecting. Soldat customer experience program, not sure if anyone would like that term though ;)

I'd also consider putting the game up on http://itch.io/

It's an indie game portal and it's gotten quite popular. Could be a good forum to get some new users.

Any site and any game portal is good, People behind Soldat just need to prepare advertising note, and send it there, because no one gonna came here by them self and write about it.
Some people think that Steam GreenLight is not solution. It is in some way.  Because its better to have 120 players in lobby than 60 :] Any way to make player base bigger is good.

Also any statistic system is good, because people love statistic, today game without it is nothing. Even local system that would store simple kill/shoot/caps of player even in simple text system is good.

PS. I just found out that after spawning helmet/hat disappears for half of sec and then show up :/ Weird because it not doing this all the time. It is possible that is because eg, animation of removing it that start in middle of spawn?

Yeah I made THD create an account there and I have one as well. Atm the old gui is a turn off especially on HD screens, once that is fixed I'll put it up there.

That reminds me... we are also on Desura. I guess I'll have to check how to update it there.

superdownloads.com.br and baixaki.com.br were the places to get new players in Brazil, I'll try to contact them too.

Before of Soldat on Steam we need a decent gui (at least a revamp) and a touch on the crap interfaces.

I also remember a time when we used to post the new releases on reddit and then all band together to upvote upvote upvote! Of course our userbase is probably not as big anymore for this to really work but maybe with a nice video highlighting 1.7 with some sick frags might build some interest? I've been taken demos during the betas and RCs could try and throw something together over the weekend possibly :e

Also maybe forum admins here and sctfl admins might consider doing a mass email? Sure its sort of spam but 1.7 gfx changes may bring back some players who have forgotten about our beloved game :)

Thanks for keeping this awesome game alive <3

Not sure about steam, sure we need people playing to keep the game and the community alive but I'm not sure "we" want anyone to join, what makes the soldat community special to me is the fact that people are really involved and a lot of people that were playing 5, 10, 15 years ago still check regularly for updates, I guess future will tell us.

As someone playing since the first public release, I certainly want anyone possible to join. I haven't checked in for a year or so, but I imagine the servers are completely empty at this point? If you want a healthy game, we've got to have at least 500-1000 people online at peak.

Servers are not completely empty, no. There has been way more activity back in days of course but Soldat is still doing 'ok'.  You will still always find servers to play on or gathers to play competitive matches.

Just messaged some download portals where you still find very old versions of Soldat.
Please do this too. Most of the times it's very simple. Just google for "Soldat download" or "Soldat game" and check if the newest version is available. Often there is even a link like "Newer version available? Tell us here!".

@Shoozza: I know Soldat is not really under the THD umbrella (yet?), but could we maybe add it here? http://thd.vg/#games (http://thd.vg/#games)
Also: I've read Enesce's post on reddit, but... does MM know? I mean, you never know with Michal. Sometimes he suddenly appears out of nowhere. This could be one of these rare moments. :P

truly impressed with your work and it looks amazing, however I can't get it to run on Mac OS  X (Yosemite 10.10.5) with Wine, where it just shows a black screen, tried to fiddle with the settings a bit but with no luck, has anyone else tried it on mac so far? I succesfully played the game before with Parallels but its rather annoying having to boot up a completely diffferent OS everytime you want to play, would make a lot more sense if it worked with Wine in OS X. Shoozza have you or any other developers succesfully got it running on mac?

Its something like: "You all are annoying mentioning this all the time! get lost!""

Yes we are annoying, because players spend on maps 99% of time, and even if we have "HD" graphic any new player that enter game gonna see shitty maps filled with ugly polygons. Even old GUI look fresh compared to some maps...

So probably some people would say: "If you are so wordy, make map. eeeee!"
For past... 20000 years people where making maps on this forum. You could find people who made good quality maps in their free time just because they wanted... and it was like: nice look! cool map! but we dont care.
Because just not, because you used png file, because one polygon color was bad, because I dont like that person, because someone else make this map long time ago, because scenery is to dense...
Like if the current maps would be so perfect in every way...

Also third time Im gonna ask what happens to map that shoozza showed up in beta2? This Ash building part? If someone say that in this period of time you didnt finish this one map... I seriously doubt that you make anything at all...
Even one map remake would be cool, and after seeing what devs awant nd what they aiming for, other users could start making maps again, but only if they would know that it could be used, without knowing it, no one gonna care just like no one care for past few years about refreshing them.

Looks and feels amazing, fantastic job. Little suggestion, one of the first things that were always modified by me were the bullets with the trails to be a lot more visible.

I see you are talking about Steam, they could take care of the anti-cheat via Steamworks I presume, which is the next big milestone. And the last one, almost as important, what about the netcode? Was anything done to it in the last years? Can anything be done even?

People today are not like we were 10-15 years ago, if they see now what we did not care about back then, they will be very fast to judge the game, leave a review with a bad rating. And the first impression must be good if we want this game to be alive again.

dominikk for fuck's sake, read the docs carefuly: http://wiki.soldat.pl/index.php/TMap.AddObject
This returns TActiveMapObject, not an integer. What you've got is a memory address of that object. I'm amazed pascalscript actually compiled that.

Softonic replied, too, saying they would update their entry for Soldat soon. So it does have an effect.
Go ahead and help spreading the word about this great game. Write to websites and magazines in your country. They will thank you for the hint.

For now, the only succesfull mac attempt we have information about has been with parallels (it had some high dpi issues but those could be fixed and it was reported to work fine).

I'm getting just black screen too. wine 1.9.2 / mac mavericks.

btw. who was high enough to add 'RR' as a default map?

The story of RR: I made RogueReturn (http://tms.jrgp.org/2010/?map=553) in 2007 (!).

In 2009, Wraithlike reworked it a little to create RR (http://tms.jrgp.org/2010/?map=1075).

7 years later it was added default because people on SCTFL like it for 2v2 / 1v1 SLV1 matches.

Who would have thought the idea I had when I was 14 would be added to Soldat almost ten years later? Totally fucking unexpected but I think it's cool. :D What's next, will my ten year old Adore (http://tms.jrgp.org/2010/?map=56) be added as its also played still?

Goddamn, this is so cool. I've recently installed Soldat a few months ago, but I couldn't get it to run properly, it stuttered horribly when moving around in the game. But, with this new update, since the fps limiter in the config menu was locked by default at 500 (instead of 60 in the previous version), it runs fucking smooth now! And damn does it look good. I gotta ask...what makes a game stutter so much, especially in this case when the fps limiter was at 60 instead of 500? I understand that, at least in my case, the game was running at around 400 fps, which probably explains why locking it at 60 caused all that stutter, but I still don't quite understand why exactly. I have similar stutter problems in other games, some insight would be appreciated!

Until then...will have a great time with Soldat. Thank you so much to the people who've worked so hard on this.

I confirm. 1.7.0 version looks good but Soldat needs more players. Now it is difficult to find even one person to play 1vs1...

The only hope is STEAM but in my opinion the release Soldat on Steam platform is unrealistic.

I would like to know at what time you checked that. There were even >20 players in the lobby at 4am CET last night. Right now (14am) there are ~100 players online.
Except of that, I agree with most what you said. Looking forward to some community-driven work in the future, too.

I confirm. 1.7.0 version looks good but Soldat needs more players. Now it is difficult to find even one person to play 1vs1...

The only hope is STEAM but in my opinion the release Soldat on Steam platform is unrealistic.
Nah, developers could release it on Steam tomorrow if they wanted to.

Steam doesn't want soldat.
They have to implement steam api into soldat, which I don't know how it works with delphi.

True that.
Join #lrs @ Quakenet. They might set up a realistic gather there.

No, they won't. The bot is dead and won't be rehosted. Leo went away, for good this time. You can always start realistic gather at #gather.eu

He's still around IRC. Hosting servers for other games. Unturned at the moment, I think. But his soldat servers are most likely gone for good.

Great job with the release, guys. Keep up the good work :). I'll have to report another problem though :(

My soldat forever freezes between rounds. It seems like when loading maps, the client locks up and i can't really do anything besides minimizing, turning it off in task manager and then reopening client few times untill it finally works. I just found out that it only happens when loading certain maps, and im also not able to do anything when these maps are being played, it doesn't even matter how many times i restart.

This is what happens when lothic comes out. Forever freeze until someone changes the map.

This is Guardian :D quite interesting..

Rotten, d2 and ib works like a charm. Didn't check the rest yet besides those mentioned. Any ideas ?

I have such freezes when my LTE router switch to EDGE or 3G mode and its limiting Internet speed. Not that often but also between rounds.
Second screen shoot look more like graphic driver problem(maybe because win xp?)

try to delete all maps and get them re-downloaded from the server when attempting to join.
Also, you might try out some different settings in the config.exe
Do you play on a low end machine or why are you using such a low resolution?

updating drivers or using different drivers is also recommended. did these issues also occur in the alphas/betas/release-candidates?

Seeing how you got this ported to GL you should try making a web version

I feel like the root of all these problems is just the OpenGL driver being bad at dealing with low memory (or just buggy maybe). Some systems have an option in the BIOS to increase the video memory, maybe you could check that.

Actually, a web version of Soldat would help the game exponentially.

PerroAZUL, do it up bro!

Imagine Soldat being as accessible and popular as agar.io

Its not that bad idea, and it would be amazing experience. Very often I plug my phone to BT mouse and keyboard and idea of playing soldat on phone/tablet is hilarious(even if once I actually tried that via streaming app)  :D

But that would have few huge problems and massive amount of smaller ones. Not only in code it self but typical problems that no one look at in the first place, like storing data, 100MB of default files + even more from custom sceneries/maps etc or different configuration options(especially key binding that I always find annoying in browser games), remaking/optimizing to browser system(because browser games are way more resource hungry) compatibility with different browsers, etc etc. And I would not even ask about server-client problems you could have...

Well, the OpenGL port doesn't really help much for a web version. Soldat would need either a complete rewrite in javascript or some compile to JS magic, which as far as I know needs some specific libraries for it to work (or you need to implement whatever libraries you use in javascript I guess, or attempt to compile them to JS). We can't even compile to linux right now, let alone to the web. I don't even know if there is something to compile Delphi to JS (and doesn't really matter, I'm assuming there is). Another thing.. networking would be limited to Websockets afaik, which is a protocol on top of TCP, and TCP adds some unnecessary overhead. A lot of people say that TCP "is just fine" but other people (including people very knowledgeable on the topic) will say that it's just plain stupid to use TCP for a fast peaced multiplayer game. My guess is that it would work decently on great network conditions but would quickly become shit with non-ideal network conditions. That's just a guess though, I haven't really tried any web based multiplayer game comparable to Soldat.

I don't like the idea of Soldat being a web browser game. It would lower it's status as a full download-to-play game. Also, this would require a lot of code rewrite, lower performance and rather insignificant increase in players count.

There was Quake Live, but now it's on Steam.
There's QuakeJS (www.quakejs.com) which is a port of ioquake3 to JS with the help of Emscripten, and it works flawlessly; you can't tell the difference between it and a dedicated installation.
Title: Re: SOLDAT 1.7.0 RELEASED!
Post by: urraka on March 09, 2016, 12:19:39 am
I think I tried Quake Live once, but it was like some kind of plugin, so probably not restricted to any of the web limitations. I don't really count anything you have to install as web based. Chrome has been dropping support for that kind of plugins afaik. QuakeJS does look like real web based. I wonder how its networking works compared to a native version. Probably not an easy thing to tell though, might need to be very familiar with the game to tell the difference or notice any flaws that come with a TCP based netcode.

A warm thank you for all your help, guidance and support, guys. I finally got it fixed i think, but first things first.

1. try to delete all maps and get them re-downloaded from the server when attempting to join.
2. Also, you might try out some different settings in the config.exe
3. Do you play on a low end machine or why are you using such a low resolution?

4. updating drivers or using different drivers is also recommended. did these issues also occur in the alphas/betas/release-candidates?

1. This is what i tried at first and to my surprise it somehow solved some of the problems. Amazingly, guardian started working with 600 fps(lol). I couldn't really believe it because even with tweaking some settings I have never been able to reach 150 before. Unfortunately, shortly after the influx of enthusiasm, i found out other maps were damaged and my mood went from 100-0 real quick.. For instance, this is what ive been receiving while trying to enter Death2
(http://i.imgur.com/oYXqdJH.png)

2. I tried this the second time and I got no results. I think ive tried all possible configurations - no results whatsoever. Then i decided to delete all my textures, mods, old edges etc. How much greater was my surprise when I opened Soldat and saw this :D
(http://i.imgur.com/hEZ15iG.png)
Some parts were still invisible but it was a good start and a motivation for me to keep on searching the key :D, and i did so and went further which is now my next point - I reinstaled Soldat, but it didn't help at all unfortunately. My client was showing a blank white screen no matter what i did.

3. Well, this is what was happening to me when i tried using different resolution :D
(http://i.imgur.com/yOvBPUI.png)
Anyways :D Ive never used other resolution than 640/480. I got used to it, im using same settings since the very beginning and i wouldn't be able to perform my best using any different one. I tried it once for fun and it was awful, i couldn't even move my leg and i was dead, ive seen glaciers move faster than me on higher reso, lol..

4. Yeah it did occur in betas and alphas and i decribed my problem (http://forums.soldat.pl/index.php?topic=44077.msg525355#msg525355) before and received a helping hand from urraka.

yeah im using win xp but i updated my drivers recently, but this might be it, i don't know because i am no longer able to update some of my Windows XP content

Okay now it's getting exciting. This was my last resort. Yesterday I tried to increase the dedicated video memory in BIOS and it worked! Well, it's either this or new drivers because i decided to update them AGAIN using different ones from amd.support. Anyways i played few gathers and it seems like my Soldat WORKS! Well, almost works. There's just one little problem left - i am unable to see medics. They heal me but i can't see them. Any ideas :P?

oh.. and sometimes i couldnt connect to the server again, like when i was trying to join the server, it only said "requesting server" but i was not being moved to the game. It only happened twice maybe. I didn't experience the same problem today and i played few hours.

Well, that sounds like good news :D

iLLskiLLs reported a similar problem - unable to join server. We don't really know why that happens but he said it just stopped happening after system restart.

Invisible medikit sounds really odd. Did you check if the image file looks fine? It should be 'textures/objects/medikit.png'. We have both png and bmp there but png always takes priority. You could try removing the png one to use the bmp instead. Maybe that works... for whatever reason.

He did also change his firewall settings to never block c:\\programsx86\soldat

Still, the fileserver is borked in 1.7.
I'll see if I can get it reproduced on the weekend to make a proper report on the 'wrong map version detected' loop issue, which won't let you update the map version but keeps kicking you from the server in a loop.

This did happen to me on a random pub a few days ago. Kinda sucked because the pub had like 10 players and it was hosting a map I made 10 years ago and I really wanted to play it with other people instead of bots. After getting kicked with "wrong map version" 5 times or so it let me join which made me happy.

Had a bit of an odd thing happen. I had a ctf server up and running for a friend and I to play on through soldatserver.exe, and we loaded it up with oh, some 7-12 Boogie Men. He only had 50 ping and stable internet, but certain bots just completely didn't show up for him at all. There was no rubberbanding, no lag for him, so he would just get impaled by a bot randomly. I even spectated him once and saw him standing directly beside an enemy flag-carrier and he said that that particular bot didn't have that flag. It was odd. In the kill feed for me, all appeared normal (joining my local IP) but for him, I'll have to doublecheck, but he said that when he died the killfeed reported that he killed himself with the chainsaw. No ping warnings were given or anything.

Could this in theory be because I set the server player limit to 8 but exceeded that with bots? I feel like that could potentially be what happened...though I have no idea why it would just fail to show him that player altogether.

I kicked them all then added less and that solved the problem.

This is what happened when i removed png. I checked it few times. It happens every time i delete medkit.png. Restart didn't change anything, i don't even know what is that..

but then i tried using just png and i deleted bmp, and guess what.. IT WORKS, i can finally see medics :D I'll play few gathers again and check if anything weird happens this time.
Title: Re: SOLDAT 1.7.0 RELEASED!

Hmm everything showing up big is some issue with the scale info from mod.ini (which I haven't been able to reproduce but already changed something that might fix it for next version). I'm really not sure how that could relate to deleting that png file. I also have no idea why deleting the bmp one makes it work, since it should have been completely ignored in the first place... Anyway, everything happening to you seems so weird but if it works, it works xD

Hey a bunch of maps are missing from the serverpatch. I experienced this with ctf_Hormone being from the previous release causing "invalid map version" errors for people connecting.

nagather-servers@lion:~$ unzip -l serverpatch2.7.9-2.8.0.zip | grep .pms$ | wc -l
75
nagather-servers@lion:~$ unzip -l soldatserver280/soldatserver2.8.0_1.7.0.zip | grep .pms$ | wc -l
97

Maybe shoozza can release a fixed patch?
