Title: R by Mika R.
Post by: Mikeman on March 16, 2007, 01:51:29 am
Hello! It's time to introduce myself a little. I live in Finland and I'm 18 years old, I'm in a school studing about computers and coding. My real name is Mika Rautiainen and my interests are Soldat (ofcourse), coding games, finding bugs from games  :D and some other stuff like girls and so on..

I'm going to continue Michal Marcinkowski's little game 'R', by coding it more and by adding new graphics, sounds, music, etc. I will code it for Windows-platforms and not for Linux or any other OS!

---------------

R

Author: Michal Marcinkowski (version 0.9)
Continuing Developer: Mika Rautiainen (version +0.9)

Version: 0.9
- First public release by MM (?)

Version: 0.9.3
- Fixed some minor bugs, like pressing F9 (edit mode) during cutscene crashed the game.

---------------

Any ideas, suggestions and help are welcome!  :)

Maybe "continuing developer"?
I'm glad that someone will finish this.
"Good luck. You'll gonna need it"

Good luck to ya :)

I just hope you keep the originality and randomness intact. Like for eg. never knowing what the next lvl holds (Skating,  Trampoline Jumping ...)

And maybe look into fixing this bug, where if the guy is holding on to a wall on his left, you can keep < (left arrow key) pressed and tap > to make him climb the wall. But if he's holding on the right gotta press > and let go of it before you press <
Hope that made sense ;D

Hmm ok, I'll take a look in to that Frenchie. Haven't noticed it by myself ingame..  :P

Is anyone interested in working with him to make it work on Linux?  Linux could really use some third party games, and I know that I'd play it if someone worked on finishing it for Linux

I know someone that haves Linux on his computer and he can past me the disk so that I can put it on my computer (with virtual computer) that way I have windows and Linux on the same computer :) but I don't think that I would be able to compile it for Linux because I can't even compile it for Windows :( so if someone can help me to compile it for windows after I could concentrate on Linux

You can download Linux for free from internet.

Did you advance in coding it?

I'm in school and I don't have so much time. I have made some changes but I'll do more before I release next version.. I'm planning to make main menu after the intro is played, where you can choose the story you want to play. MM's episodes would be the first story and I would make my own story as second. Story means just the episodes and their maps.
If someone has ideas what I should put in the menu, please suggest and I'll see if I'm able to code it. (if I have skills enough to make it)

Btw Michal, am I allowed to put a download link to new versions of R here?

EDIT: I'm having a serious problem with SDL, when I compile it, windows gives me a small window telling me something like this (it is in finland on my screen but i try to turn it to english): "SDL_LoadObject couldn't be found from dynamically linked file SDL.dll" <--(or that was SDL.lib or .h i dont remember, im in school now) it went something like that... maybe I should re-install SDL or something, not even my own made SDL codes can't be compiled.. they worked before..  :-\

Mikeman, I doubt MM will have any problem with you posting the new versions, but when you do post them please include the new source code along with the compiled binary(ies)

I suggest you first make a basic project using SDL, to get a feel how it works, then move on to R.

Yo wait, what school is that? Since im interested in these things too but I dont know where exactly can I find such a school. And im finnish too btw. Where is this mysterious place of knowledge and what does it require?

It has normal stuff also like English, maths, etc.

But the school has been useless for me in C++ coding, I had to practise all by myself by the internet.

Dunno the english word but in finnish, after I finish the school I'm supposed to be "Datanomi"

Amis:
Hyvä palkka - parempi mieli!

What does it teach then? What do you do all day on a normal school day?
Besides the common subjects I mean. (Math, english ect.)

Also can you tell me where did you find good C++ coding tutorials? Please?

And as being a student like you, I want to ask what made you choose this profession?

I'm interested in computers, that's why I chose it.

In school we build up computers, install computers, learn java, c++, server-side programming. something like that.

I just googled the C++ tutorials and learnt them  :)

I wanted to ask I have download Fmod (FMOD Programmers API Win32) and (FMOD Designer) So I think I have all what I need for R (if I'm wrong tell me) and now what do I need to do put the FMOD header file into my project folder or someting else.

I'm really sorry now, I cannot continue R. I have my own project and I have lot of school things.. so I don't have time to code R, I hope someone else will finish it someday.
Or maybe I'll continue it someday

When the game, R, was created, I was interested in knowing how to make a game myself. MM, maybe you can teach me how? :D If you don't want to, that's fine. :D

I don't think MM as time to teach a person c++ because it take's a lot of time but you can just learn with tutorial on the net or books and by downloading Dev-c++ thats what I did and I'm all set you can ask me question to

I'm working on a small C++ project: Tanks, it's version 0.6 so it's not ready yet. And I won't release it yet :P

You know a good download site for C++ and some programs to help build something like R?
Title: Re: R by Mika R.
Post by: rfreak on March 23, 2007, 06:27:25 pm
Yes (http://www.bloodshed.net/devcpp.html) is a good site to download Dev-C++ a free compiler and that's all what you need to program you need Fmod (go to www.fmod.org) and SDL librery (http://www.libsdl.org) and I suggest you to de a little game before going with R someting simple with SDL and Fmod and for tutorial search google and if you're smart like me ;) it will be easy to learn

learn the syntax and basic stuff, get sdl, and go here (http://lazyfoo.net/SDL_tutorials/index.php). works for me

[offtopic]Long time since I visited here, but I'm back now ;)[/offtopic]

Just to inform R fans and MM, I'm continuing the development of R.
I'll release new version of R this week, with bug fixes, maps, and with some new stuff.

Cheers

I might as well download it again to give it another go after your next release.

Next release (v0.9.6) will have these small bugs and stuff fixed/added and it will be probably released today or tomorrow:

To create the missing maps named ".not done", which are already done except the map after map called "Miami Vice". And to fix bugs, like game crashing bugs.
After this release I will add a totally new set of maps, graphics, plot and dialogs. Old maps will ofcourse stay, you can choose from menu to play MM's 'Part I' or the new one(s).

Any suggestions/ideas for the 'Part II' are welcome!

:D

PS. The 'state.sav' file which saves which maps you have beaten, can be used in version 0.9.6 so you don't need to play all the maps again.
