Title: Cyst's Map Compilation
Post by: Keron Cyst on March 18, 2007, 11:48:53 pm
Cyst's Map Compilation

Grouped most recent to earliest according to the old board's Quality Maps section, and then just maps I recall were 1337 off the top of my head. Mapper of old Chakapoko maker gets a whole section at the bottom for his traditional, Marcinkowski-style of mapping which I love :)

If you believe I'm biased and you're angry about your map not getting on this list, as I've already hinted above, I am a biased human, so it may not be fault of yours whatsoever; I just tend to sway towards particular map styles, and particular mappers (if a map is amazing but the mapper himself is a jerk and disrespects others, don't expect his work to be on here). I also don't like maps that have too much custom scenery, especially if the scenery can only be used on their respective map alone (like a radiation-specific map or something). You may feel free to ask about getting a map onto this compilation, but to be honest if your map really is resplendent, I'll probably recognize it without any requests and put it here on my own (tho' I may forget about some, heh).

Plus I think I have freakishly high mapping standards. Some excuses for official maps should be replaced by some here, IMO, and I detest just about all the crap I myself have tried to make. :P I've been criticized for criticizing, lol, and I'm only human and therefore biased a bit towards particular authors or mapping styles, so don't be too surprised if you made an awesome map that somehow didn't make it on here.

"What's a .RAR?" you ask. Go here (http://rarlabs.com) and witness the 1337ness of WinRar.

Great DM map, albeit a bit small in my personal taste. I love the scenery usage. Waypoints.

Area pack: 10 maps (http://KeronCyst.fileave.com/Area-Maps.rar)

Most of chakapoko maker's area maps are one-on-one levels, but I think they're all fun recreational maps to have at any time.

Looks Arena and HH after all. Color scheme is like Karh. Could be well done. For 4-8 players . No team spawn.

Conventional DM. Bot waypoints are flawless on this small level.

Close-combat map created for the 2006 SML swamp-themed HTF contest. Waypoints work for HTF and CTF.

http://KeronCyst.fileave.com/htf_Muck.rar

Nice close-combat map. Submitted for the 2006 HTF swamp-themed SML mapping contest. Kinda bad waypoints, but at least they're somewhat functional. :P

CTF / Inf.

Boxo's ctf_Path

Detailed Overview (http://img358.imageshack.us/img358/4746/ctfpathom3.png)
http://KeronCyst.fileave.com/ctf_Path.PMS

Nicely represented atmosphere, kinda reminiscent of ctf_Run. Waypoints.

chakapoko maker's ctf_Mound

http://h1.ripway.com/chakapoko/public/ctf_Mound.zip

Comparatively recent work from mapping diety chakapoko maker, the result of his fiddling around with PolyWorks. The layout and aesthetics are excellent. Waypoints, by himself.

Demonic's ctf_Cseri

http://llsc.us/members/Demonic/uploads/ctf_Cseri.zip

A nice, standard CTF map. Waypoints.

Eagles_Arrows' inf_/ctf_Grainz

Detailed Overview (http://sml.u13.net/maps/overview/overtherainbow.PNG)
Others: 1 (http://sml.u13.net/maps/screenshot/8h8h8.JPG) - 2 (http://sml.u13.net/maps/screenshot/536kk.JPG) - 3 (http://sml.u13.net/maps/screenshot/15151kk.JPG)
http://sml.u13.net/?p=mapdl&map=452

I don't like the palm trees, but that's the only bit that ticks me. E_A did an excellent scenery job mixing barbed wire and WWII tank traps throughout this desert landscape. :) Waypoints, by him.

grand_diablo's ctf_Kinfaun

http://KeronCyst.fileave.com/ctf_Kinfaun.rar

Nice conventional CTF map, based on the Scottish Kinfaun's Castle. Waypointed.

grand_diablo's ctf_Micra

http://www.denacke.net/Dibo/maps/ctf_Micra.PMS

A refreshing, unconventional CTF; meant to be played with Chainsaws and/or Knifes only, according to 'dibo. Waypoints.

Demonic's ctf_Nibelheim

Others: 1 (http://img283.imageshack.us/img283/3563/niebelhim19zu.png) - 2 (http://img474.imageshack.us/img474/8606/niebelhim21wy.png) - 3 (http://img474.imageshack.us/img474/2056/niebelhim30lk.png)

"Themed around the mountains surrounding Nibelheim in FFVII." A slightly unconventional CTF map. Waypoints, by semagae.

grand_diablo's ctf_Preyhunt

http://www.denacke.net/Dibo/maps/ctf_Preyhunt.PMS

Conventional CTF. Nice, dark atmosphere. Waypoints; the symmetry, although I hate to admit it, really helped with making the bots more active on this one.

Demonic's inf_Maria

http://KeronCyst.fileave.com/inf_Maria.PMS

Conventional infiltration map with brilliant light/shadow effects. Waypoints.

Rambo_6's inf_Lighthouse - uphill stationary-gun madness!

Detailed Overview (http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/1360/newbitmapimageef0.png)
http://KeronCyst.fileave.com/inf_Lighthouse.rar

Very abstract infiltration map, kinda like inf_Fortress reversed! Awesome work. Originally released with crude waypoints and structure; I upgraded it to v1.1 in rewaypointing it, fixing various polybugs, slightly spicing up polygonal graphics, etc., and Rambo_6 added even more finishing touches.

The Geologist's inf_Iceberg

http://keroncyst.fileave.com/inf_Iceberg.rar

Great scenery & shading, especially the deadly water. Waypoints. This map was a pain to wypt. (since the white Alpha flag is not where Alpha spawns), but it crudely gets the job done.

The most graphically beautiful map ever. No map I know of has come even close to this magnificent work. His first map, too! :o

Waypoints, plenty of 'em.

PapaSurf's htf_Machete

Amazing HTF map, tho' pretty large for my personal taste—however, the spawn placement shows perfectly what I believe HTF was meant to be. Great atmosphere, and the waterfall scenery isn't at all bad, either. Waypoints in abundance.

rainrider's htf_SuperPants - level concept by Keron Cyst

http://KeronCyst.fileave.com/htf_SuperPants.rar

This is my concept of what HTF should be like, not a boring stand-off one-way CTF which so many maps portray it as (and which, IMO, eventually led to its unpopularity). I like to think it carries out its goal fairly well after people are baited in by rainrider's amazing graphics. :P Waypoints.

Absolutely amazing graphics. Third map by this guy. You can stand on the cars, and rocks and birds serve as colliders. ;D I still have a semi-waypointed version on my comp....

An extremely huge map, truly intended for grand warfare on a massive scale of 8 or more players at the very least, judging from my perspective. Got waypoints, yeah.

Swamp-themed HTF made for a SML mapping contest. Awesome scenery effects and amazing bottom-left polygon barricade. Waypoints.

The Geologist's htf_Industrial - level concept by NorrisScott

Boxo's ctf_Struggle

Great ctf_Kampf remake. The angled polygon shading technique is intriguing. Waypoints.

Boxo's ctf_Trek

Detailed Overview (http://sml.u13.net/maps/overview/trek_ov_01.PNG)

Something of a ctf_B2b remake. Nice Bravo bridge. Waypoints.

http://KeronCyst.fileave.com/ctf_Myanmar.PMS

Conventional CTF with awesome PolyWorks-done polygonal shading. Waypoints.

rainrider's ctf_Frozen

Others: 1 (http://img82.imageshack.us/img82/3214/ctffrozen11gf.jpg) - 2 (http://img82.imageshack.us/img82/417/ctffrozen27ac.jpg) - 3 (http://img82.imageshack.us/img82/416/ctffrozen38zl.jpg)
http://KeronCyst.fileave.com/ctf_Frozen.rar

1337 mist effects and scenery. Weird, slightly undefined but refreshing layout. It has a freebie exploit in the middle-top on the right side where you can climb onto the roof. Waypoints (the top paths are kinda fun to watch bots jet across :)).

Soap's ctf_Monsoon

Others: 1 (http://www.poronet.com/host/soap/ctf_monsoon_1.jpg) - 2 (http://www.poronet.com/host/soap/ctf_monsoon_2.jpg) - 3 (http://www.poronet.com/host/soap/ctf_monsoon_3.jpg) - 4 (http://www.poronet.com/host/soap/ctf_monsoon_4.jpg) - 5 (http://www.poronet.com/host/soap/ctf_monsoon_5.jpg)
http://www.poronet.com/host/soap/ctf_Monsoon.zip

The first map to use the swamptree graphics, created by Soap. Beautiful jungle scenery, some of which eventually made it into Soldat's default Scenery-gfx. For the ESL mapping contest of old, before v1.3.1. Waypoints, his.

Boxo's inf_Aardvark

http://KeronCyst.fileave.com/inf_Aardvark.rar

Smart guy, naming it "Aardvark" so that it'll appear first in the inf. list :P Great atmosphere.

Waypoints. This one self-taught me how to force bots to backflip-jump; if you want to see them in action, follow a team of Bravo troops to the bottom-left.

... and another one of the largest threads in the entire forums! [retard]

Great compilation, I don't disagree with a single one. Would you mind maybe making a .rar with all the maps and scenery? Or would that be too much to ask?

Wow these maps look fun and different compared to the "traditional" soldat map I play. I'd have to say, good work collecting all of these maps, and I'd also have to agree with Wraithlike, I don't disagree with any one of them.

I'd have to say, some of these maps don't make mapmaking look easy ;).

Either that the

putting the mappack in the attachement
the Soldat Files Directory it is a great source of old maps, I included it at some map resources (http://forums.soldat.pl/index.php?topic=62.msg70#msg70)
