I think he's using a mac, but you can make it look like it. The toolbar up there is ObjectDock, it's free to download (http://www.download.com/ObjectDock/3000-2341_4-10210264.html). Just find a similar theme to the one in the pic. Then, in the ObjectDock settings, disable the windows taskbar and enable the Dock's taskbar. You can get the weather widget with Yahoo Widgets. And maybe Atticus could give you the wallpaper.

The widget is the default system monitor thingy. Right clicky on the top bar and add to panel, select "System Monitor", Change options.
They actually go to /media I have not gotten them to auto-mount yet.

I've always got a bunch of windows opened full screen. I almost never even see my desktop anyway, but it's what I usually use for temporary things I might use once or twice. I'll delete that pic eventually. I just don't feel like uncluttering my desktop at the moment.

Yeah, afaik all Linux window managers have support for multiple virtual desktops built in. Each lets you have something different in them.

I had some ridiculous problems theme-ing XP Media Center earlier today...:
For the longest time, my taskbar and start menu were stuck in the "Windows Classic" theme. For ~4 months, I ignored the simplicity of the theme - actually grew to like it. Until today. Today, I had had enough. I had found some really nice backgrounds that simply would not mix well with the white "Windows Classic" theme >:(
The result of this was 3 agonizing hours of research and troubleshooting to find what was wrong with the XP theme-ing. I tried 7 different solutions, but to no avail. Turns out some program named uxtheme.dll in my windows directory was really supposed to be named uxtheme.bak ???
Thus, I have to post the result of 5 hours of tinkering to feel some more achievementness:

I used to keep it on the left side, but when I got my second monitor, I had to put it on the right side due to how my desk was constructed. I keep it hidden all the time, and I keep my icons hidden too, which is why I only ever post the actual image file instead of a screenshot.
Also, with Windows 7's new interface, I'm pretty sure it's better to keep the taskbar on either the top or bottom. But hey, I'm used to it like this, so whatevs.

Haha thanks. I bought my Sager without Vista naively thinking I could use my other laptop's Vista recovery disk. Being forced to get Win7 was the best accident ever. I wiped Vista off my other laptop as well afterwards and stuck on Win7.

I once tried to use Rainmeter just to test it out. It lagged THE HELL out of my laptop (its specs are good, believe me). I don't understand why would you need so detailed info. The best part is about those with weather forecasts on desktop - I'm sure they don't need these because they don't leave their basements.

How did you change the taskbar? I was looking for a way to change explorer skins in windows 7, but it's either done the really dirty way (replacing explorer.exe and some of system libraries) or using commercial programs like WindowBlinds.

Most places you get visual styles (themes) usually have a guide to using them. Visual styles only require that you patch 3 files (replacing explorer.exe is only if you want to chage the start orb or stuff in the explorer window such as putting the up one level button back in) I used this (http://deepxw.blogspot.com/search/label/Universal%20Theme%20Patcher) to make it easier.
Some good visual styles can be found here. (http://browse.deviantart.com/customization/skins/windows7/visualstyle/) I'm using 7pro final atm.

Damn, LiteStep is awesome. I love packing too much info into one too small box. The bottom left panel shows time (hh nn and ss in the upper part), current download speed (next to seconds) and battery level, and when mouse hovers over the bottom of the screen they're changed to date (dd mm and day of week in the upper part) and uptime in the lower part. And if the volume changes, the clock changes into volume meter and back again after one second. Next to it sits the taskbar, next is foobar2k-song / hovered-taskbar-button-name and finally, tray. Minimalism rocks.

Her eyes are actually kind of ambiguous there; I'd say the biggest indicator that she's not on the computer is that both of her hands are on her book. (Also, you can't see it, but the computer monitor isn't facing her.)
But dang, without the context of knowing the characters, I admit that scene is kind of depressing. But, if it's any consolation, the image sat on my computer for quite a while and I never noticed a thing wrong with it (or at least, that thing wrong with it) because that's totally how that girl would act. In fact, she wasn't even the one who put that hat on her head.

I honestly don't know how I feel about it. Luckily the latest ubuntu has an option at the login prompt "Ubuntu Classic" so you can choose to use the old gnome if need be. It's certainly interesting and neat.

For the reason I stated above. Why should I put eye-candy on my computer? I know attractive girls in real life. (REAL real life, not the "real life" in the "this person has existed somewhere at some time" definition that you use.) My point is, I put stuff on my desktop that I CAN'T just see anywhere. At work, I use pictures of landscapes that I'm never going to see just from walking outside. At home, I use pictures of characters with traits that feel rare in real life, or participating in scenes that don't just happen in real life (Exhibits A (http://forums.soldat.pl/index.php?topic=12688.msg478478#msg478478) and B (http://forums.soldat.pl/index.php?topic=12688.msg480207#msg480207)). There's a method to this madness, and it's a little deeper than SOME people's qualification of "uhhhh she is HAWT".

The only monitor that's VGA is the one on the right. The first two are DVI. The third is also a widescreen, not a full screen. And I prefer trackball mice.

Well it's CLI based, so it's commonly ran in screen so you can reattach and detach without logging out. Some say that using a bouncer with a normal irc client is better/easier but I prefer running irssi in screen and just attaching to it from work/home/wherever and being able to jump right in.
There's that, and irssi has built in perl scripting, great logging, nice themes, etc etc

I haven't gotten myself motivated to learn/use tmux yet. I use screen literally everywhere--on the servers I manage at home and the stuff I do at work. If I tried switching from screen to tmux I'd be fucked. There's that and ^b just seems insane compared to ^a which I feel is easier for the left hand to navigate to when about to immediately make another key combination. Additionally, I consider the fact that it hasn't been under active development a sign that it's "done", in the same spirit of qmail (but less ridiculous) and putty among other programs that never add new features and rarely release updates.

I only bother with fighting linux as a desktop OS on my laptops; my desktop is better off as Windows so I can get shit done that my laptops aren't powerful enough to do. Don't worry, all my servers are either Debian or CentOS though. That said, E17 felt too flashy/plasticy when I tried it last.

With Steam for Linux, I am totally sure I'll never have to use Windows again on my SSD, unless I'll be taking on specific apps that make use of DirectX libraries. Then I'll just buy a HDD, or pick one I already have for it and slap ntfs-3g on my Arched SSD so I can always take a look at my Win7 whenever it's borked or not willing to do a specific task.
Just a FYI, Windows 7 is not a desktop environment, it's an OS. Windows Aero is the DE of it. :V

I use win7 mainly because of Visual Studio (because c# is kind of nice and it's the easiest and most powerful way of writing windows apps quickly), and ofc also because of Steam. Valve still haven't ported the half life series to Linux steam and that really irks me.
I did run FreeBSD on my first colocated server for over a year, and security/stability might be the best thing going for it. The downside is how you have to either install programs from precompiled ports or have the system compile them all for you automatically from source. The issue is that if you're box is old, compiling *every* program you want to use can take days as not all programs have precompiled packages. This is the only con to using FreeBSD. If you're using FreeBSD as a load balancer or firewall (with relayd and pf respectively) then it's great as you have to install very little software to get it usable. The ease of apt-get and yum wins over FreeBSD's ports for this reason.
Regarding Debian/CentOS, I *much* prefer Debian and only use CentOS when the server has some hardware I can't get Debian to work with (or when I want to use OpenVZ as Debian dropped ovz support), an example being the sata controller on my newest colo. The best thing CentOS has going for it is the ten years of support, compared to Debian's ~3 and Ubuntu's 5. Ubuntu and Debian win however because you can easily upgrade from release to release without needing to reinstall. FreeBSD also supports upgrading from release to release, which is nice as their release cycle is really fucking weird.
On my laptops, I run Debian unstable with Fluxbox. Someday I'll be able to afford a macbook pro and I'll probably just get them instead.

All I use my PC for is surfing the internet, organizing my music, drawing and writing my skilled works for school. I have a very full schedule because I work and receive off the job training. If I want to socialize with friends and meet my girlfriend from time to time, I have to cut back somewhere. I have that PC for years and never ran into problems. For my needs, it's the best and cheapest choice ;)

I think it looks like that to, but its specs are better than any of the existing desktop computers you can buy. HDs are really pci-express connected flash storage, two GPUs, estimated 128GB of ram, crazy awesome xeon processors, a single fan that pulls all the air out the top, the parts inside arranged in a triangle form, etc. It is essentially high end server specs in under a foot tall. It's going to look more like an all black NOS canister instead of a trash bin.

His shortcut to soldat.exe is the MsDos logo.... ;) I remember how that logo was for .pif's and old .exe's back in older versions of Windows. He's especially into nostalgia for using the windows classic non-aero theme.

I don't know why you brought up RAID, but I can tell you that mobo raid usually is "fakeraid". By this I mean every drive in the RAID has a bit of software metadata on it (placed by the motherboard/shit raid cards) and it is up to the OS to handle configuring the RAID and making all of the drives show up as a unified block device. Problem with this is if the OS is misconfigured or if the cards die there will be issues in the boot process, performance is generally terrible, you can't move the drives between machines, and it's just a waste in general.
At work when we use hardware raid instead of Linux soft-raid (mdadm, google it), we use premium cards by LSI and Adaptec an 3Ware, where the resulting logical RAID volume (generally RAID 1, 5, 6, and 10) is transparently exposed as a single block device and the OS generally is unaware of the underlying implementation.
TLDR mobo raid sucks.... and I still don't know why you brought it up.
As for why I use Mac, it's because it is pretty, has native unix terminals, and I can pretend it's a linux workstation by installing software from source and via macports. Having tools like cc/make/git/svn/ssh/python/etc installed by default is pretty nice too. I don't use Mac because I'm a designer or a fag or a starbucks enthusiast or any of that other stereotypical bullshit.

I understand Linux(looots of customization) but Mac....
I can understand if all you use a computer for is porn and Facebook, but as a unix software developer/sysadmin my options are mac or Linux. I used Linux on the desktop/laptop for easily 6 years and then found mac. Macs are more reliable than Linux in terms of the desktop (no xorg breaking and fucking with kernels/nvidia drivers) and they offer more functionality and can run paid-for programs natively (like ms office/outlook/adobe/etc) while still providing unix shells and ability to compile linux software from source and so on.
That, and there's no debate on whether apple makes good laptops. My new macbook air as well as my macbook pro from work both beat the hell out of my aging Dell Latitude e3600 from 2009 which was a very very good computer in its day. They're solid metal, flash storage, and have gorgeous displays.
"Mac" comprises two entities: the Unix derived operating system and the hardware custom made for it. Foxxy is saying that he wants to use the OS and build a PC that works with it, known as a hackintosh. I would have done the same years ago but from what I understand, building a hackintosh is risky as upgrades can brick it.

Sorry, I just get heated over topics like this. Sometimes I just have uncontrollable outbursts of verbal rage. Same goes for people advocating Windows over Linux without giving reasons and so on. It's mostly all in good fun though. I redacted some of the edginess from my post.

iPad and mac are different, iPad is for browsing internet(dont use to much apps on it), and Mac is... normal hardware PC with different system that compared to Windows is a bit... limited. When I used it in work I had only few graphic programs but when I tried to "play a bit with it" it was just like ride in golfcard compared to Land Rover(for me).
I have too much program that I use and I like to modify my system so I don't see the point of leaving all my apps and habits just to have new OS. And that why I dont understand some people that leave all their stuff and habits just to have new system if old one work.

I haven't used Windows or Linux on the desktop in months at this point. Having macs everywhere is great. No need to bounce between completely different uses of alt+command+control all the time.
