Title: Icon for 1.4

I was talking to MM the other day about how soldat.pl could use a FavIcon since every browser requests it anyway.  I suggested that he hold a contest to have someone make one. 

The favicon is the icon that appears in the address bar and tab for a site (assuming your browser supports it)

Anywho, he said "Maybe we could make a contest for a new icon for the page and Soldat 1.4?"

So here's the deal:


Questions?  Post your submissions in this thread.  In a week (Next Saturday) I'll make a new thread for voting.  If we have enough submissions, you'll be able to vote for your favorite 2 or 3 submissions.  If there are only a few, then you'll just vote for your favorite one.

This is your chance to have something put into Soldat ;)

I like the idea of such contest, but why everyone should submit 32*32 icons?  ??? To make large icon and then several of smaller resized copies of it sounds much more logical. So i think 48*48 icons should be submited.

I think flab has a point - it's hard to take a picture and make it smaller since pixelating it will make it lose quality to unpredictable extents.  Usually if it looks nice at 32x32 it'll look just as good in 48x48

well yeah that's the idea...  i usually just blow it up and manually edit and smoothen it.  it works rather well!

Came up with two ideas. Didn't understand if their were requirements or not (a soldat being present, etc.) so bare with me...

You don't really want to squeeze text into a 16x16 unless you're rather crazy. At least not in the same way as you would in a 32x32 one.

I like vice's most, but would be hard to make it as 16x16 icon.

Damn, Toumaz killed my confidence. ElephantHunter's is rather nice, but in my opinion, the theme isn't too Soldat-ish. I'm not even sure if a Soldat-ish feel can be obtained through vector art.

I must say, those are beautiful vice.

I like the second one more.

Also, these are a step away from the traditional icon of soldat, and that's why I think they're better suited than others because of this.

I've made a 16x version. I'll probably make a 48x version later... although the contest kinda only asked for a 32x thing...Oh wellz! xD

Not that it's a big thing, but you could at least not have copied the text right down to the last pixel.

Vice thats awesome, maybe try getting rid of the S&D, make the bit on the medal where you have Soldat written change it to green to match Soldat theme.

Good pixel artists are hard to come by good work Vice :D

Really depends on what key elements in the icon the audience notices when they double click on it. Could be the word "SOLDAT", the picture of a soldier... or it could be the green backdrop.

What I was aiming for was a sense of progression. The new Soldat really is a leap, where all the other versions were steps. I'm totally making this up, but people digg progression :P

Looking at them all again now (after waiting a dayish)... I've gotta say that Toumaz's fits the Soldat "feel" much better than EH's.  While EH's is shiney and stuff... it just doesn't seem like Soldat to me.  Toumaz's pixel-style and the way his icons look seem much more fitting.

I'd have to go between Toumaz's and vice's
I have to agree with FLAB on this one, EH's icon just doesn't give have that Soldat feel to it. Its too clean and shiny, whereas Soldat is dark and gory. The icon on its own is gorgeous though.
If its Toumaz's I prefer the transparent one. But I think vice has a slight edge over his.
I like the badge paying homage to the registered users : )

I'd like to see some actual Soldat actions, like either chainsawing (which someone made) or something like that rather than the usual soldier.

VTT, where did you get those images?  If you drew them yourself then wicked, otherwise maybe not (plagiarism). Slayers' latest are the best IMHO now (may also look good with the b2b backbround colour).  There's so many coming outta the woodwork, but slayers keeping original to the game. ROCK ON!

The 16x16 icon will need to be tweaked quite a bit. It's abnormal to just resize a standard icon.

Actually I have an idea for an Icon. Just 2 soldat members. One armed, one unarmed. The armed one has the rifle to the unarmed one's head. The unaremd man uses the /victory code and we take a shot of when his arms are in the air, like he's set up or something?

Have you tried out The GIMP (http://www.gimp.org/windows/)? It's a free image editing program that works very well and is updated regularly by the open source community. It has quite a learning curve due to the way things are organized, but it has all the functionality you would expect from professional photo manipulation software.

There are also a variety of pixel art editors out there, although I can't name any that are open source.

I like Swede's (Toumaz for the illiterate:D)  and Slayer's Icons. I think that Swede'll prolly win but someone mentioned config.exe icon. Slayer's icon could be used for that seeing as both of them have that same modernised soldat style.
