Title: Vote for Soldat in the Indie Game Showcase!
Post by: Michal Marcinkowski on May 15, 2007, 01:08:51 pm
This is the first time I entered Soldat into a contest. Let's see how this goes. Of course I'm gonna need your help so check out the site and cast a vote for Soldat. You can play other games for free there too.

VOTE! (http://www.indiegameshowcase.com/play/index.cfm?method=app.votingForm&gameid=6BB114C1-5056-A102-1AA37ADC30E28A43)

At first I was gonna rate honestly, then I saw that Michal would win a cool Developer's workstation if Soldat wins and so I said ****it and rated all 10's.

My comment section:

There are few commercial games that can boast the kind of long-term loyalty that Soldat has inspired.  It's incredibly easy to get started playing this game, which is why it has such great international appeal, and almost impossible to stop once you get started, due to the fact that it is full of incredible subtleties.  The basic (and still most popular) game modes would be enough to keep a person playing for years, but the community continually reinvents the game itself in different variations like Racing, Climbing, Dodgeball (played with KNIVES!!!), LAW catch, Zombie servers, Trenchwars, R/S, and the list goes on and on.  If this Rating System included ratings for Replay Value and Community, Soldat would dominate any such competition easily.  As it is, Soldat's Gameplay and Fun Factor easily compensate for its relatively low Graphics and Sound ratings.  501D47 43v34!!!!!!!

Done! While I felt a little bad giving it straight 10's, I do believe it should win. Here's the comment I left:

"I'm a long time supporter of free/indie games. Of all of those I have played Soldat has stuck with me the longest. Its pared-down simplicity accentuates the core gameplay aspects: fun, fast-paced, tactical."

I wander why "Indie Game Showcase":

  • don`t show information (and/or block) when someone is sending few votes;
  • don`t show count of current votes for game;
  • don`t show current game ranking;

It`s bit fishy.

They keep it secret until the results are released. Rest assured that this isn't a scam of any kind.

Don't mess with Clean Asia!. That game has music several times more kickass than Soldat (sorry Michal Marcinkowski, I don't like your old tracked files), plus more mechanics which allow you to use the enemies' against them. You freakin' grab fallen metal shrapnel off them and fling their own shrapnel back at them! It's one of the most addictive shmups I've ever played, if not the most addictive. When I'm playing it, an hour can fly by as I try to beat it. The only time Soldat takes up that much time is when I'm playing with my clannies.

Sure, Soldat is a great game and has taken up far more of my life than all shmups I've played put together, but don't hate on other games just because you feel like being a one-minded jerk. Also, I think that might disqualify Soldat if the community attempts to sabotage the competition.

All the other games seem so small and pitiful when compared to soldat. Of course the community will also help

The only other games I know of there are Toribash, Defcon and RoboBlitz, but Soldat blows them away. Voted!

I don't think so, I'm sure Soldat has a bigger audience than RoboBlitz.
I played it and what kind of indie game is it? It's based on the Unreal engine and it probably had a bigger budget than all the games in the contest together. Just wait until EA Games enters the contest.

Dawnspire: I didn't play it, it says "original" fantasy game on the site. There is no such thing as an original fantasy game.

Synaesthete: cool idea but 2nd place!?

DEFCON: this game is also good but better than Soldat, where??

well soldat made it into the semi finals! dont be too pissed because you didnt win :). I looked up the games and they seem pretty good. but yes soldat is a great game with superb game play. but you dont know how much fun the other games is if you dont nerd it for some time.
Title: Re: Vote for Soldat in the Indie Game Showcase!

It is the same like with the music, i think: There is the mainstream and the underground. Its hard to compare both things because the two consumers have an different aim. Soldat is more like an arcade "underground" game, i think: A good fight is like a dance that need many hours of training. Also the 2d-style, the controls and the specific atmosphere of the polygons and body animations are very unique. When i first saw the game i knew that i found what i was looking for. That is the difference to the other (good) games i was playing before.
I think many people don't understand why soldat is a well made game. Like my son don't "understand" the beauty of classic music.

OK, i also like to be in the community and pwn majors with my knife 8)

Not all majors are bots, some of them even play good :) i have played some times on private servers, even had my own clan. Now i mostly play on pub dm 4 fun. I realised that i spent to much playing against pro's because i always want to be the best. I won most of the matches, but i wanted to win ALL. Then i give up. There are laggers, sprayers, lamers - to be a n00b is sometimes better.

That was my clans filosophy: Frag's Don't Matter - Only the skill counts

No Frags - No skill.
No Skill - No frags.

Rofl. Frags matter mostly.

This is not topic here, but,
if you had played with me you would maybe know what i mean. I like fast playing. Im often on first position on pub dm servers, many of them use auto guns - i prefer knife as primary. i give a f*** 'bout frags because i know that my throwing skills are uniqe. These sprayer hitz tickle my ballz.

Plz dont reply.

I think the thing with soldat is that it's an acquired taste. First time I played it, I only played it for a few days and didn't like it much. It takes a while to get used to the game and it's controls and maybe the people playing it couldn't be arsed to play it properly.
Title: Re: Vote for Soldat in the Indie Game Showcase!

Soldatforums do not have enough people to vote. If Soldat was Browser based, where all the players would enter the main site, and there was a banner about this "compo", I'm sure Soldat would have made in top 3 at least.
Title: Re: Vote for Soldat in the Indie Game Showcase!
Post by: SirJamesaford on September 20, 2007, 11:13:06 pm
Maybe next time (that is, if soldat enters the contest) we can advertise it on the moonsix banner thingy (if thats not what its called then i meant the thing on the nag screen).  That way every player will know about it.
Title: Re: Vote for Soldat in the Indie Game Showcase!
Post by: Clawbug on September 25, 2007, 11:21:04 am
Comåetitions like this suck anyway, it is just about which game as biggest audience voting it, so in practise this means that the game with best advertiser will win.
