Title: Official news about the future of Soldat and Crimson Glory
Post by: Michal Marcinkowski on June 16, 2007, 07:40:45 am
Soldat:
There are a few things that need to be fixed still. Especially some network problems which will be resolved. Also BattlEye is fixed and will be fully functional in the next version. This will be a quick fix so expect it soon.
Also because I can afford it now I will be buying a dedicated server for all Soldat related sites and my future projects. It will be maintained and setup by FliesLikeABrick. This will be a huge step forward for Soldat and the entire community.

Crimson Glory:
I have ceased development of Crimson Glory and have moved on to working on another project. Crimson Glory is on a very advanced state, the whole engine is built, there is a lot of graphics done and is fully playable (without net-code). I had to come this far to realize that this is not the game I want to do. The main reason is the 3D aspect of it. Modelling and map making in 3D takes too much time. I want the game to be as easy to mod as possible, making it possible to edit the game just with a paint program not with advanced 3D editors and animators. I will release the game as it is now just to show that I wasn`t doing nothing during this time. You will see how it looks and how the engine works. The engine will be used (after switching to 2D sprites) in my next game. I won`t give out any information about it yet, but as I see it now, I truly think it will be the best game ever made in history.

edit: the source of Crimson Glory has been released here: http://mm.soldat.pl/?p=28

Shit no, I'll say.
So Michal, is it to be understood from this that there will be no further working on soldat after the next version comes out, or after "the few things" are fixed?

"...as I see it now, I truly think it will be the best game ever made in history."

I have no doubt it will be  ;)

Yay, 2d games FTW. Never really liked the 3d concept of Crimson glory, I have to admit that. Anyways, whatever project is next after soldat, I hope it will have more modding options. Or atleast add more options to soldat.

cheers and thanks for the info, really good to hear you will fix soldat :P

Thanks anyway for all the hard work you've put in.

As always ;)

I really think that Crimson Glory would have been better in 2D; just look at the quality of some of the Soldat maps out there now. Not to mention, the camera was always meant to be a fixed perspective; 3D from that kind of perspective can be very difficult to map/model for. Flying a 2D plane, with animations for rotation, would have led to not only a nicer look artistically(as artists have full control over what you see, without relying on how the engine decides to render it), it would also be, as you said, easier.

Still looking forward to what kind of a state it's in though, and for more news on your next project.

Well there will be working on Soldat, just maybe not by me. That's all I can say now.

I decided that 2D airplanes would not be good. It would look "cheap" or old like Triplane Turmoil. Especially because of all the camera action that I planned. There would be no place for pixelized airplanes with a zoomed camera. Also maps have to be 3D because there is a whole sea at view, with mountains and everything in the far plane. It would just not look good with 2D, it would look like an old nintendo game with parallax effects for background and cheap tricks like that. CG should be 3D or not at all. So I decided to make a different game instead.

Awesome news, can't wait to find out more about the new project!

Question about the Crimson Glory version you plan on releasing: will it run on older computers? Seems pretty advanced sounding.

The best thing for MM to do right now is to finish working on Soldat and get everything related to it settled down.  After that, it'll be the best time for him to work on Crimson Glory.  I'm looking forward to it.

and it sounds like thats exactly what he's going to do, something I've been recommending to him for a long time :P

I can't wait to build and manage this server for him, it is something I've been wanting to do for months, and I'm very glad he finally decided to.  This will allow the official Soldat stuff to be separated properly from the U13 things, and will provide increased reliability and performance for everything: the forums, soldat homepage, lobby, bug tracker.... and the other half-dozen components of Soldat's hosting.

Usually I hear about most news from MM well before he announces things, but this stuff with CG he kept secret even from me.  I knew he had some large announcements to make, but he wouldn't tell me what they were :P

I can't wait for what the near and distant future hold.

edit: a question for MM:

Will CG be released open-source or in binary format, or both?  Hopefully both like R.

yey just what I hoped, not another 3d game, but a cool fast and easy 2d game.

3d multiplayer games usually suckass, since they've not got the right interface etc.

Cant wait for the next game :)

And I totally agree that 2D games are nicer to use than 3D. Mainly for modding purposes but also cause my computer is ancient.

He never said that the new game was not to be 3D even if it's sprite it can be 3D or some part of it at lesse.

And that's for MM:

Good luck with the new project.

CG was the only hope to get members on my clan and my plan is dead with CG :(

Hmm. I was thinking about graphics that wrap them selves around the model, like in Warcraft III. You can download an editor that strips the skins from the models, and flattens them, allowing you to edit them like you would any flat image.

Title: Re: Official news about the future of Soldat and Crimson Glory
Post by: KamikazeDuck on June 16, 2007, 07:04:19 pm
Wow nice.

I didn't really mind CG being 3D but now that I think about it, the amount of work which needs to be put in to create a 3D map compared to a 2D one probably isn't worth it. Especially when the game is viewed from a side-on perspective. It would probably also deter a large amount of the community here who are comfortable, familiar and some, very skilled with 2D graphics. As many have seen, with tools such as Polyworks we can get maps to almost look 3D anyway.

Great work MM, I love how you support the community so strongly and put your best into your games.

FLAB I'm not sure I don't think he will release the source because he uses some part of the engine for his new game so maybe he don't want other people to have the code of that project.

YES NO MORE CG!!!!!!!! WOOT!!!!! Its like God a.k.a. heard my wish <3

CG was going to ruin Soldat's Rep + Your Rep + The World... Why you ask?
CAUSEEEE it sounds so frickin complicated! Well happily you are now stalled, and have to waste more years on making a new game, which will keep Soldat at the top!!! wootttotootot....

I call Soldat's source code when Soldat is like 20 years old :-)

Anyways, idk if this is a bug, but when I play ALONE with BOTS on LAN in Soldat, it freezes like every minute ( b by the way, the onnly reason im playing alone is cuz my internet wont work on my PC), and also like randomly i go prone and cant get back to upright position, and randomly when I fly i just stop, its like weirdd, and it never happend in 1.4 or earlier.

Peace MM.... By the way, im going to M.I.T

Ivel the new MM project is maybe not going to take more years because MM already started it and he will use some code from CG and MM is a good coder (what did I say he is a great coder) so it won't take long I think more then a couple of month maybe 1 year but not really long

No, he doesn't have Soldat's source code, only the dedicated server source code.  it was stated later, maybe in 2008 or so, MM will officially release the source of Soldat for anyone to download and to continue Soldat.  That may be the official time of when Soldat may officially pwn.  But then we'll have Crimson Glory to look forward to.
Fixed.

I mean honestly. is any modder here not looking forward to it?

Good that Soldat will be continued still for some time.

To tell the truth, I didn't really like CG '3D Triplane Turmoil'. Good luck with the new game project.

MM will you create a team to work on the game, like do you recruit mappers/etc.?
Title: Re: Official news about the future of Soldat and Crimson Glory
Post by: Snow on June 19, 2007, 01:22:03 am
Too bad for CG. I was learning Deled so that I could make maps. I'm pretty decent at 3d modelling. I was figuring it would look like the 3d style of Triplane Turmoil 2. But, I think since Soldat was very successful with it's 2d look, I'm darn sure that the new project will also look awesome in 2d. Personally I rather prefer 2d anyway. I myself am programming a minimalist 2d game.

Like many here, I would love to see how Soldat works via source code. However, I hate to say this but I hope MM doesn't release that code for a good 50 years. I want to keep playing Soldat for years, even if his other project is out.. and even if that other project was better, I still want to play Soldat. I like it as it is. I wouldn't want to see several different versions (with vehicles, larger gosteks, 3d crap... etc.) floating around out there. That's not a good ending to this game's legacy.

Besides that, Im also afraid that if the source were to be released that it would go the way of Quake. After ID released Quake's source.. the game and all its mods including Team Fortress died due to useless cheaters making new cheats based on the code. Well TF almost, Neo TF is out now and has a few servers goin. If the code was released to a small group of personally trusted individuals who would then keep Soldat protected and alive.. I'd have no prob with that.

Keep up the good work MM. I look forward to seeing CG as it is and I can't wait to have my socks blown off by your next project.

Its great that you are concentrating on the modding aspect of the game!

When Crimson Glory sounds like a great game, but people like myself would have no way of modding it due to my lack of understanding of 3D design!

I hope CG will represent the much loved modding side of soldat!

I dont know if anybody remembers a very old game for the PS1 Called 'Vandal Hearts?' It was a great game that combined a simple 3D map with 2D characters.

I would love to see a game based on this kind of animation. As it benefits the modders with easy-to-use MS Paint editing. And a simple map editor wouldnt be a problem.
If this game could incorporate some form of real-time fighting similar to soldat, that would be great!

For those who have not heard of the classic, here it is: http://uk.psx.ign.com/objects/000/000727.html

Yeah those are sprites, like in Doom.

I'm aiming for the same animation as in Soldat but better. Meaning players will be constructed out of a skeleton with multiple sprites which can be easily edited.

no this new version will probably just have a bug fix and especially in the network code because of the frequently server disconnect. this can be read in the first post MM posted in this topic. also if you read some stickies in suggestion forum you will notice that MM will NOT add any veichles in soldat.

Are you talking about the maps which were given an appearance overhaul? The maps generally provide the same gameplay, except with a different look. An example would be Airpirates.

one thing would be make a vechile-troop game with soldat-dudes. not that much coding, and all vechile-whiners could get what they want :D in different game ofc.

i would love to see the face of mm when we were expecting here in the forum that he release v 1.4.0, to see all the people that was waiting, the forums i guess o´most colapsed XD ( i have to say that i was surprised)
Even more when he sayd weeks before that he was wondering if anyone still play soldat.

I hope that to see that encourage him to develop Soldat for a lot time more. to resolve the bugs and others problems, and continue with the hard work.

Grettings.

Well, the good thing is, even he doesn't feel like doing it anymore I'm sure he'll do something with the source so that other people can have a go at it.

I too would like to get a hand on the playable version of crimson glory.

Mmm...can't wait.

...Am I the only one who liked the 3d aspect of CG besides Selknam? :] Oh well, it's not up to me, and MM had a good point when he said that he wanted it to be easily mod-able. Like Soldat.

Farewell to CG! I will visit your grave.

Please give us 1.4.2 already! I cant stand 1.4.1 anymore!!
soldat was a skill game before but now when 1.4.1 got released it turned into a luck game.
I did say the 50% eating chanse is because of the new netcode. because we shall not aim infort of the enemy anymore but to hit directly makes it mostly luck. before you had to adjust for the lag which you could have skill.

You're saying that now that you have to actually hit the guy to do damage that it's luck? What are you on?

It doesn't take any less skill now, it just makes more sense that you should be able to hit the guy and actually damage him.

No. thing is that eating is a big part of the game now. it have happend I have shoot 4 ruger shoots on a stand still guy (sniper) without him taking damage and then 2 more while he was moving, and he ate them all. I think the netcode in 1.4 was great and didnt really need any fixes. DE acctaully worked in 1.4 and also 1.4.1 provided heavy server bugs. what MM should do is to release 1.4.2 but it that version is a pure copy of 1.4, or maybe with a few small graphics fixes.

Instead of random health packs there needs to be the introduction of a medics class. For example America's Army. You just call for a medic by pressing some button and maybe an exclamation mark comes over your head so the medic on your team can heal you. But if he doesn't come in 10 seconds then you die and respawn. Or even an actual combat system instead of punch, punch, punch, punch, die.

Before suggesting anything please read the list of things NOT to suggest. One of these is any sort of character classes, it is not necessary and I see no problems at all with the health packs (which are not random as far as I know).

Also, Soldat is not a fighting game, it is a side-scrolling shooter, if you want martial arts or something go play Gunz.
Title: Re: Official news about the future of Soldat and Crimson Glory
Post by: Splinter-Snake on July 13, 2007, 07:10:07 pm
So you're telling me a game can't be a side-scrolling shooter AND have a combat system. That's pretty fucking stupid.

And Gunz is probably the worst game ever.

I decided that 2D airplanes would not be good. It would look "cheap" or old...
Hmmm... usually airstrikes happen really really fast, maybe you could do an air-strike thing where you see the planes in the distance, then they come around to bomb the target. You could also do a little shockwave thing like Garry Newman did for Facewound. That would be cool. Your work will be well spent.

"...as I see it now, I truly think it will be the best game ever made in history."

Nothing will beat Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas dude. Not even BLACK (10/10 -PSM) and God of War (10/10 -PSM) can do it, so for Crimson Glory to beat GTA: SA... a bit impossible.

But I believe it will be a good game, just not the best.

Eh, interesting how your 'best ever' game choices date you.  As do mine, I'm sure.  In my opinion (and I'm very very old keep that in mind), Resident Evil 2, Super Mario World 2, Final Fantasy VII, Starcraft, and oh yes Virtua Fighter 2 (for you arcade junkies) are teh greatest.  Like fine wines, these are a few of the games that are so goddamned good that they still deserver to be played, even as the march of technology has passed them by. Oh yeah and one other little game I forgot to mention above:

SOLDAT
