PolyWorks FAQ

01. What is PolyWorks?

PolyWorks is a map editor for Soldat.

02. Where can I get the latest version of PolyWorks?

The current public version is available in the link above. The latest test version can be found on irc in the #soldat.polyworks channel on quakenet.

03. Why is there no help file?

There is now :D

05. Can you make polys go behind the player?

No, this isn't possible in Soldat.

06. The Palette/Scenery/Display window doesn't show, and it's checked off in the Window Menu.

Try Window -> Workspace -> Reset Window Locations.

07. Can you make the controls like in MapMaker?

No. You'll get used to it.

08. How do I put multiple textures in my map?

Put two or more textures into a bitmap and use the texture tool to manipulate the texture coordinates.

09. I get this error when I try to run PolyWorks: System Error &H8007007E (-2147024770). The specified module could not be found. (Or any 'missing file' type errors.)

Make sure these files exist in your Windows\System32 folder: MBMouse.ocx, COMDLG32.OCX, mscomctl.ocx, msvbvm60.dll, dx8vb.dll, scrrun.dll. The first three are included in the PolyWorks zip, the others can be found with google. If putting them in the Windows\System32 folder doesn't work try registering the missing files: start -> run, type in regsvr32 name_of_file.dll_or_ocx.

10. I get a runtime error when I start PolyWorks.

Try changing the Dir entry in the Preferences section in polyworks.ini to your Soldat directory.

11. Are there poly bugs in maps made with PolyWorks?

In PolyWorks the "bouncy poly" bug has been eliminated (where polys would randomly turn bouncy along the edge after compiling). Poly bugs associated with vertices still occur, but they are easy to prevent with correct poly placement. Read the Map Maker Manual for more info.

12. I get a Direct3D initialization error when I start PolyWorks.

Make sure your colour setting is either 16-bit or 32-bit (control panel -> display -> settings tab).

13. There is no scenery in my scenery window!

Right click with the scenery tool to bring up the main scenery list.

14. (Windows Vista) I get an error that says one of the components is missing or invalid when I start PW.

Try registering it: Make sure you have administrative rights, go to C:\windows\system32, right click cmd.exe, and click "Run As Administrator." Type in regsvr32 comdlg32.ocx (or whatever the name of the files is).

15. (Windows Vista) I get an error that says "ActiveX component can't create object" when I start PW.

Follow the instructions in #14 with the dx8vb.dll file (search for and download it if it doesn't exist on your computer).

Read the PolyWorks Help file for more info.

Do you continue updating it?

Right now, I find it fairly inconvenient to 'color' polys as opposed to Mapmaker +

I'm planning on making the last major update soon; after that I'll do minor updates if they are needed.

In what way is poly colouring inconvenient? You can simulate mm+ colouring by using the vertex colouring tool with the vertex colour mode set to dynamic and an opacity of around 5-10%.

Oh, a bug you probably already know about (I posted this in old forums), when you minimise Polyworks with the texture window open, after reopening Polyworks you have to reshow the texture window. It's just a small bug but it gets annoying.

Edit: answer to
can i ask some questions??

how do insert multiple textures?

You have to make a texture, combining two textures (one next to the other). Open up the texture window and select the squares that cover your desired texture and using the "texture quad" option (from right-clicking with polygon tool, you can creat squares that will only be covered by the selected texture.

That might be hard to understand so just go in mapping help and look in the tutorials thread. ;)

Will you fix the "clear unused sceneries" function as well? That'd be usefull too...
Thanks again Anna, PolyWorks is the ultimate tool

Had this problem too...it's that those windows are spawning off-screen. I think I reinstalled Polyworks to fix.

Anna, Polyworks is such an amazing program that if you were selling it I would buy it no question! I just got this version...everything is 10x better than the standard map editor, but one thing that bugs me is the scenery window. First, is there any way to make the BMP filename list longer (vertically)? Or, just bigger altogether.

Thanks for taking the time to make this program.

I am afraid it's not possible. None of the windows are stretchable/resizeable in PW (could be implemented in the next update).

Three ideas:
1. If you can hide all polygons / sceneries / objects, you should also be able to turn off colorizing - it would be useful for texturing when polygon is colorized already, but it's too dark to see the details.
2. Refresh sceneries. What does it do? Dunno. But it should re-scan scenery-gfx folder for new sceneries - restarting PW each time I make new scenery is stupid.
3. All arrange functions: send to back / send backward / bring to front / bring forward should be hotkeyed. I hate ordering sceneries by clicking and clicking and clicking on menu. On hotkey I would just push some keys and wait until I'll see expected effect.

1. Could be usefull
2. Yeah i also hate having to restart every time i add a scenery
3. Already has hotkeys but they aren't labeled in the menu: End & Home ; Page Up & Page Down

Failed to load control 'CommonDialog' from comdlg32.ocx.
Your version of comdlg32.ocv may be outdated. Make sure you

I've put comdlg32.ocx in the System32 folder, I have registered, made sure
it was the one I had with the application. I haven't made sure that it is
"up to date," but I have downloaded several others with the same version number.
What should I do? ; ;

Here's a suggestion:

If you select a part of the texture in the texture box, then you select one or more polygons and do ctrl+f ( or make a new button for 'Align texture' ), it would automatically place that texture part on the selected polygons. Hope it's understandable ^^'

Polyworks needs its own forum ^^

Suggestions:

Map density calculator
Figures out how dense the map is.
Code: [Select]
(p_vol/(compile_width*compile_height))*100p_vol: The volume that the polys take up. Tis may be difficult to calculate, due to overlapping polys :\
compile_width and compile_height: The width and height of the compiled map area.

Map detail calculator
Determines the detail of the map:
Code: [Select]
(p_count*1000)/p_volp_count: Number of polygons in the map.

MOVING POLYGONSN!!!!!!!!!1
Just kidding.

@Demonic: would be a useful feature, but I can't think of a good way to do this.

@Mistercharles: I already added map dimensions to the properties window, I'll see about calculating the area that the polygons take up. I'm not sure if I want to put density and map detail, they are easy to calculate anyway if you have all the information.

Here's a preview of an experimental PolyWorks feature I've been playing with:

Very nice. I really hope you impliment this, it'll allow for some much more rugged maps.

I have a few suggestions to add to the list...

Scenery filtering - A little search bar where only the scenery with the word you've typed in is a part of the name.

"Only used scenery" button - Scenery list only shows sceneries used in the current map (will come in useful when creating a zip and also when you are only using a small amount of scenery types in your map).

All the best.

Post by: Mistercharles on July 11, 2006, 05:53:45 pm
I'm assuming the experimental feature averages the colors of the vertices, and then colors the entire polygon that color? Nice. Oh wait, nevermind.

Regarding my idea, are you saying that poly volume and compile width/height will be displayed in future versions?

@jettlarue: I don't like the idea of other people seeing and changing my code :x Maybe someday I'll do it, after I stop making updates (if that ever happens ;)).

@KamikazeDuck: both of those features are already implemented. Typing while the scenery list is in focus will let you find sceneries that start with those letters. To see the list of scenery which are currently in use, click the arrow in the corner of the scenery window and click 'Load Scenery' (this will change in the next version though).

@Mistercharles: Yes.

I should probably explain those screen shots: the first one is the 'depth map' where the shades of grey represent Z-coordinates. The second one shows the shading on the polys after the light source is applied. Here is how it would look after the colours at the vertices are averaged:

wouldnt be bad if anna could add or make an export to .BLEND file then open blender with a couple parameters and woot there it is. actually that would be sweet if there was a .BLEND to .PMS file too so you could add lightsources within blender and then just export it and virtually no shading is involved, then you could go back into polyworks and finetune the map.

I don't think I'm going to implement the smudge tool in this map editor, it's not that useful in most situations.

Here's another feature I just got working:

It just lets you draw lines which are independent from the map, to use as a reference while placing polys.

Multi-texturing is easy now, have you got the latest polyworks?

Thanks for the sketch tool Anna! No more stretched and pixelated paint drawing scenery as a reference for me.  :)

Go and take a look at the first post on this thread.

v1.3 is the latest version at the moment, multitexturing has been made very easy with the texture window, all you have to do is select the part of the texture you want to use and put it on your map by making a textured quad.

You haven't even read through the thread...

American system is month/day/year. Most other countries use day/month/year.

Silly americans.

I had one small suggestion for you Ania. I'd like to be able to resize/move the mapmaker window using my mouse, so i can tailor it to suit my needs. I wonder if that's possible. As of now i can only choose to make it fullscreen or half size centered. :P

You can change the dimensions of the main window from Preferences. Resizing it with the mouse causes complications, mainly because of DirectX.

Eagles_Arrows, Ania is my irc nickname and also a different form of the name Anna.

I've also decided to post some impruvment ideas for PolyWorks (maybe something allready have been said,  ::) , but anyway):

1. Separate displaying of Back, Middle and Front Scenery - I guess this will be very helpfull while working on maps with great number of sceneries...

2. Possibility to select Pallette and Workspace from ComboBox (or whatever it is called in english...) just like list of special waypoint functions...

3. Is there any means of making translation of PolyWorks to other languages? This will attract many new mappers...

4. Possibility to run Polyworks from console with attributes like -umap"..." or -cmap"..." with autoloading of specified uncompiled/compiled map.

5. Could you please open file structs for .PFB file format? Then it will be possible to make kind of *Prefabs Archivator* programm that will allow easy sharing of prefabs for maps...

@VirtualTT: 1-4 are good suggestions. They won't be in the next version of PW but I've put them in my to-do list.

Here are the types used in my .pfb file:

    rhw As Single
    Color As Long
    tu As Single
    tv As Single
End Type

Private Type TPolygon
    vertex(1 To 3) As TCustomVertex
End Type

Private Type TVertexData

Wait, Anna, some of these new functions, such as depthmapping need to be saved as a sister file, right? Or have ytou found a way to add it into the PMS structure without soldat freaking out? If not, the extra data can at least be added to the PFB structure, right?

Sorry if these questions were answered in your previous post, I don't really program, so I couldn't understand any of what you said.
Title: Re: Soldat PolyWorks v1.3 [Updated 09/03/06]

The lights and sketch data is appended to the end of the PMS file when you save. On compile, the the light sources are applied to the vertices, Z-coordinates are set to 1, and the lights and sketch data is discarded. Lights are not saved when you export.

Oh, I know. Make placing and changing the size of colliders easier, perhaps seperate from the ojects list. And make some better way of selecting and/or moving objects; objects won't snap to the grid unless you highlight them with a polygon :( . OH YES, please allow us to re-align the snapping grid to a selected vertice! I hate making grid aligned maps only to test it and find out the grid has moved on me. And it looks like you already have/probably will with the depth maps/mock z-axis, but add extrude/protrude tools for vertices (moving the texture) and/or a mock z-axis for each vertice.

Collider size change: Very easy right now.
Selecting/moving objects: Insanely easy, not to master tho
Re-align the grid to a vertex: Yes, PLEASE.

Wow, I'm actually excited...

Polyworks has become a very strong tool, the effort you've put into this program is amazing. I'm downloading.

edit: There looks to be some very good features there, I'm awaiting the tutorials so I can actually use them.  ;)

There are two problems I am having.

1. If I hold down the sketch tool too long, it will stop creating lines and Polyworks crashes.

2. My scenery window is not displaying any scenery, even when I click "reload scenery list". When I open a map I have previously made, the scenery of that map will appear in the list but again, I cannot reload the scenery and when I try and use any currently on the list I get an error: "Error clicking scenery. Element not found". I've checked all my folders and everything looks to be where it should be, but it still does not work.

WoW! Shading have become really fast!!  :o But it's pity that Depth Map tool doesn't support opacity, you need to manually create new color for every new vertex to make it work smoothly...

@KamikazeDuck: to view sceneries list just right click anywhere at the working area.
The only problem about it is that it can be too long to fit the screen...

Some new bugs:

1. Mentioned problem with Sketch tool. PolyWorks crashes.
(http://img93.imageshack.us/img93/1271/svv4.th.jpg) (http://img93.imageshack.us/my.php?image=svv4.jpg)

2. Trying to use Depth Map tool will crash PolyWorks if there are any invisible polygons on the map.
(http://img93.imageshack.us/img93/7650/rewr2.th.jpg) (http://img93.imageshack.us/my.php?image=rewr2.jpg)

3. New tools don't support undo/redo commands...

4. Tool panel sometimes randomly changes places after minimizing/restoring of Polyworks window  ???

5. If Poly Creation tool sviched to Textured quad mode right-clik menu stops working (only for this tool)...

Old bugs:

1. Frame around selection of Transform tool doesn't refresh if selection was rotated by Main Menu item (like Main Menu=>Edit=>Transform=>Rotate 90 CW)
(http://img93.imageshack.us/img93/2279/rouo5.th.jpg) (http://img93.imageshack.us/my.php?image=rouo5.jpg)

2. Reverse visibility doesn't work propely. Sometimes it is necessary to use it several times to make polygon invisible...

Woah, another bug. Depth map, lighting, and sketching are all bugged for the "undo" and "redo" commands. If I use the undo command, it ignores those functions and keeps undoing until it reaches an "original" function. The same happens with the redo command, but it redos until it reaches an "original" function. Try the redo and undo commands with the depth map and sketch tool and lighting.

I played around with the lighting and depth map for 15 minutes and figured it out mostly. But the way lights seem to affect different angled polys is... odd. It just dims weirdly (x, y, and z differences don't seem to dim a light over distance, but somehow I get vertices that are dimmer than others on the same poly). I just don't understand how the depth factors in sometimes. But they do produce some nice effects! Thank you.

A little problem I have with the new scenery list is the fact that the names of the scenery are listed according to their file type (bmps are listed in alphabetical order, then pngs are listed in alphabetical order after that).

It makes things annoying because I can usually remember the scenery's name but rarely take note of its file type.

Can you please change this to be purely based on the scenery's name?

The new scenery list is pretty good, it's easier to use now.

Unfortunately for me, I'm currently unable to use PW anymore. It works fine the first time but when I start it again it crashes saying my ini is not compatible (fresh ini file though) and another same one about loading colours. Then I get a third one about titlebar_main.bmp not being found because the path is "...\Soldat Polyworks\\titlebar_main.bmp". Then some other errors resulting the above I guess.
Good luck fixing the new bugs and sorry to report this here, I'm too busy currently to bother getting my arse on IRC. :(
Glad to see PW's got better anyway. Thanks Anna.

Edit: It seems only english versions of Windows will work fine with this new version. My ini files are being written with french values now and that is most likely why PW doesn't recognizes them. My current fix is to set the ini files as "read only" but that sucks. :>

Very good work!

I like the new Scenery-Selector better than the old one because you have faster access to it.

The sketch tool is awesome excepting that it causes crashes after painting much.

I'm using russian version of windows and don't get this kinds of problems...

New scenery list is better then old one, but it still needs some improovments. It's too narrow to show full names of sceneries. Also it's too long and always go off screen limits...

And another bug: Error occurs if you try to refresh scenery list and then try to clear unused sceneries...

Another problem with the new update, you have put the default hotkey for the light tool the same as the hotkey for "left" waypoints, it's easy for everyone to fix, just change the light tool to another hotkey but you might want to fix it up for convenience.

Same here, It really got me really really annoyed because I couldn't figure out why. Although for me I think it just happens when you press the middle option (Can't remember what it is). And then try to click on one of the sceneries.

I've made a small update (actually two) with a few bug fixes. I don't know what to do about the ini file language problems yet, it would help if I had an example of a broken ini file. I put more error trapping in all the sketch functions which might help to find out what's causing pw to crash after sketching.

@Chesiu_24: I don't think there will be a linux version.

Don't know if this will of much help but here (http://www.soldatuploads.com/data/polyworks.txt) is my ini.
False get replaced by Faux and True by Vrai.

Leo if you read this, please delete that polyworks.txt on soldatuploads.com someday. thx (I simply forgot to rename it beforehand)

Anna: you might want to use digits instead of true/false values. That should do.

I just wanna say something that I've been thinking about for a long time.

I think it is strange that Michal haven't made this the new official map editor. When people who are beginners to mapping download the original map maker from Soldat.pl, they are often scared off by the crude interface. Imagine if those beginners instead found Polyworks.

Just a thought...

I'm getting an even worse error.

It's a Direct3d error. It happens when:

-I load an old map that uses the old waypoint system
-I use the scenery tool and it randomly comes up

This error screwed me over big time since it disallows you from saving until you restart polyworks. :/

Could someone please help me with a situation I'm experiencing currently using PolyWorks? I'm trying to place scenery files on my map, but I've noticed that my scenery window, well... it has no sceneries in it. I've checked the folder itself, checked the extensions and even used the "refresh list" and "reload" options, but nothing's showing up.

However, PolyWorks recognizes that there are scenery files already... when using the tool itself, the first scenery file in my folder appears. It doesn't show up in the window though, unless I actually *use* it.

How do I get the scenery files to show up in the window again? I'm sure there's something I've disabled in the program without realizing it, I just don't know what it is :(

Here, this is a screenshot I took of Polyworks, in case my explination wasn't clear enough :)

It is great and all, but I got one small problem, in the Polyworks folder, does there need to be a texture folder and a scenery-gfx folder? cuz I have the texture m scenery windows but I have nothing in them. Cept on the map properties I can still hange the polygon texture, buy I cant add diff sceneries. I made sure the soldat directory is correct and all, but I still can get the scenery choices on the scenery window to appear.

-I have the latest version.

any help would be nice, ty

I don't know if I'm the only person experiencing this problem but lately (only after the updates) my scenery is blurring when I insert it and it isn't in my used scenery list.

It only happens when it is not in the used scenery list and the scenery is back to normal when I exit the map and reopen it.

It's a small bug but it gets annoying when doing fine details.

Here's some pictures of the difference:

Duh. I've d/l-ed the new version, copied the stuff from the zip folder into my Soldat folder, the way I've always done, and now the maps won't compile. I edit a map, then compile&save it, and my gostek and all the objects just keep falling through the polys.

I've checked - it isn't just a matter of editing an old map (which I tried to do), when I make a new one it works the same. What am I missing?
Title: Re: Soldat PolyWorks v1.4.0.4

@KamikazeDuck: I had different filters set on scenery loading and scenery creation, I'll fix that for the next version.

@AThousandDeaths: If your uncompiled maps folder is the same as your Soldat maps folder then you're probably overwriting the compiled map when you save.

I'm back with another problem.  ;)

While putting together the forum map (http://forums.soldat.pl/index.php?topic=129.0), I'm experiencing colouring issues with my imported prefabs, they have changed to a blue colour after and reopening polyworks. Screens are attached.

This has only happened with the last 5 prefabs in my prefabs folder. Is there a limit of 20 prefabs at a time in the prefabs folder? (I currently have 25) The strange thing is that the imported prefabs change to a blue colour when Polyworks is reopened even when they are already in the map. (They'll have the correct colours after being imported and after the map is saved/compiled but when Polyworks is reopened, they are blue).

Any help appreciated.

I have a problem.. The scenerys are green and bit of invisible, and when i go to play the map, they are there green, too. How to fix it? When i installed it, these were normal, now they aren't.. Help?

You probably have your colour selected as green in the colour chooser, if you set it to white when placing scenery, they will have the normal colours.

The transparency also needs to be set at 100% in the Palette window for the scenery to be at their default alpha value.

Does anyone have just 1.4.0? I can't get 1.4.0.5 to work, I get a bad filename or number error, and it doesn't happen my my older version.

Edit:
Actually Anything before 1.4.0.5 might work, but I jumped from 1.4.0 to 1.4.0.5.

Yea I've received the same problem.. Did I miss something?

Ok heres what happens............

I open poly works and click RUN.....

A wiundow pops up and says....

Direct 3d intialization failed
D3DERR_INVALIDCALL
Error creating D3D device

I click ok in that window "Becuase its the only thing i can click"

And poly works loads up about one milla second after that. This happens another window pops up.

Saying...

Run-time error '5':

Invaild procedure call or argument

I click ok in that window and, Guess what ANOTHER F#$@#^ Window!!!
This one says

Error creating current scenery texture
Automation error

Yet again i am force to click ok....Then poly works shuts down.....WTF!

I get this error when I do ctrl + Z (undo) when I undo a scenery placement.
It destroys the whole thing and rendering my hours of work useless.

^Eh, I combat that problem by compiling every now and then, so once PW shuts down on you, you can continue to where you last saved your work, making your hours of hard work not a total waste.

Could you make the different windows appear closer to the center, please. My computer is rather old, and it has low resolution of 1024 x 768. This results most of the windows (scenery selection etc.) appear outside my desktop. If i want (wich i do) to get the windows on my screen, i need to switch resolution, and that causes my screen to shake strangely and flash. After that i sometimes manage to get it rght, but sometimes my computer gets totally f*cked up (numerous side programs crash), and my whole system goes down. Sometimes the problems continue after reboot...(i get messages telling something is wrong and i need to reboot)...the most annoying probably being the one that tells me my "system reqister" is "unstable" and needs to be restored. It takes ages for that message to go away (means reboots after reboots). So please mr.god of PW, fix the windows, could you? Please? I did say please, right?

PS: I totally love you´re program, its easy and fun to use (without the window problem of course).

It sounds like some of you need to read the FAQ. I'll try to answer all your questions anyway.

@people getting a bad file name or number error or a path not found error: Try changing the Dir entry in the Preferences section in polyworks.ini to your Soldat directory. If you extracted PW to your desktop, try extracting it to a different location.

@Kinky noob: Make sure your colour setting is either 16-bit or 32-bit (control panel -> display -> settings tab).

@numgun: I think that happens if you try to undo after doing clear unused scenery. I should probably clear the undo history after that function is used to make sure it doesn't crash.

When I'm mapping I save every few minutes and also make backup copies of my map so I end up having several versions at different stages of completion. Even I don't trust my own program ;)

@mortal_soldier: Try Window -> Workspace -> Reset Window Locations.

Hope that helps.

I reinstalled pw
I checked the paths

But nothing ever happens.
I can place only one type of scenery and thats the fishes fish -.-

Have you tried right clicking after clicking the scenery icon (the one with the tree, second column, fourth row)? Despite being a basic thing, I only bring it up since you don't mention it in your list of attempts and the image you included of the scenery box is only populated with scenery selected and used in a loaded map.

I have a question: Is there a way to change the size of space you can use? I'm making a map, but it is longer than the space permitted, and doesn't let me put scenery outside of the space.

EDIT: Nevermind, it automatically changed when I saved, and opened it again.

EDIT Again: Actually, there is no scenery outside that point still. Can it be changed?

ignore the background and just draw the map, then when you are done press f5 (refresh) and the background would have become bigger to fit the map

Yeah, but you have probably saved or in some way overwritten the compiled file. Just press Compile to PMS, and nothing more.

Also... you might wanna check if it's so silly that your polygons are set to Only bullets collide/Doesn't collide.

I have the same exact problem and doing what VirtualTT said doesn't do anything.
I re-extracted and re-downloaded the zip file several times, but no success.

Any suggestions?

Keron was lame and showed me a screenshot. Not looking bad, not at all. My main suggestion though, which I've been thinking about for a while, is programmable brushes / paint bucket tools.
Programmable Brushes could affect vertexes by applying a math function to the current R, G, and B colours. The functions could be stored in a text file that could be edited at any time. Function variables:

r: The new red value that the brush assign to the vertex.
g: The new green value that the brush will assign to the vertex.
b: The new blue value that the brush will assign to the vertex.
h: The new hue value that the brush assign to the vertex. If it goes above 255, it will loop back to 0, and vice versa.
s: The new sat value that the brush will assign to the vertex.
l: The new lum value that the brush will assign to the vertex.

or: The old red value.
og: The old green value.
ob: The old blue value.
oh: The old hue value.
os: The old sat value.
ol: The old lum value.

pr: The red value of the active colour in the pallete window.
pg: The green value of the active colour in the pallete window.
pb: The blue value of the active colour in the pallete window.
ph: The hue value of the active colour in the pallete window.
ps: The sat value of the active colour in the pallete window.
pl: The lum value of the active colour in the pallete window.
po: The opacity in the pallete window. Can be used like a variable, because it will not be used as it normally is in regard to the programmable brushes.

Example of a function that shifts the hues. Should be used with the dynamic shader. Opacity controls the speed of the shift.

h=oh+po

Another example, this one adjusts the vertex brightness without harming its colour saturation. Opacity above 50 brightens, below 50 darkens.

r=or*(po/50)
g=og*(po/50)
b=ob*(po/50)

Programmable Paint Bucket does the same thing as the brush, and has the same variables, except each of the old and new variables have v1_, v2_, or v3_ in front of them. For instance, this function averages the vertex colours together, with the opacity tool doing what opacity tools do:

v1_r=(((v1_or+v2_or+v3_or)/3*po)+(v1r)*(100-po))/100
v2_r=(((v1_or+v2_or+v3_or)/3*po)+(v2r)*(100-po))/100
v3_r=(((v1_or+v2_or+v3_or)/3*po)+(v3r)*(100-po))/100
v1_g=(((v1_og+v2_og+v3_og)/3*po)+(v1g)*(100-po))/100
v2_g=(((v1_og+v2_og+v3_og)/3*po)+(v2g)*(100-po))/100
v3_g=(((v1_og+v2_og+v3_og)/3*po)+(v3g)*(100-po))/100
v1_b=(((v1_ob+v2_ob+v3_ob)/3*po)+(v1b)*(100-po))/100
v2_b=(((v1_ob+v2_ob+v3_ob)/3*po)+(v2b)*(100-po))/100
v3_b=(((v1_ob+v2_ob+v3_ob)/3*po)+(v3b)*(100-po))/100

I hope you take my suggestions seriously, as I put a lot of thought into them.

I decided not to use those custom painted controls (like the Soldat style tabs), so PW2 probably won't look anything like the screen shot you saw. About programmable brushes/paint buckets: it sounds interesting, but if what you want is the ability to change the hue/saturation/brightness of the vertex colours or additional blend modes then it would probably be easier for me to implement that directly rather than doing the scripting stuff. I'll put it in my to-do list as something nice to have though, and if I find that it's not too hard to implement then I'll do it.

So here are some of my thoughts about PolyWorks interface and stuff:

Basic layout:
(http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/3231/1oe4.th.jpg) (http://img211.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1oe4.jpg)

Some additional functions: possibility to open sceneries in Image-editing program, auto removing of thin polygons (with two merged vertices), auto *clear unused* sceneries on map compile.

I hope this is understandable...

well, i think it would be very nice if you could use multi-texturing much easier.
without "texture quad"(how is it called again?), and this other complicated stuff which i dont know at the moment xd.
hmm, what else.. ah! if i transform my whole map, i have to reset my waypoints, sceneries etc. it would be very great if all this stuff gets moved, too!
perhaps you could save all the settings like opacity and color etc. for each tool, so you dont have to change settings like opacity every time you change your tool.
and as virtualtt said, some buttons with the most used functions would be usefull, too. :)

Ok, To fix your problem, open your polyworks folder. In it there should be a file named polyworks.ini. You want to open this with wordpad, and the first thing you should see is this:

Code: [Select]
[Preferences]
Dir=(this should show your soldat directory)

If the Dir entry is not the location of your soldat folder, you must change it to be that. (Default: C:\Soldat)

If that doesn't work, you should try re-installing in different places, and make sure you haven't installed it onto the desktop.

First unzip right straight into the Soldat directory, don't unzip in another directory or other drive first. On my computer it seemed to do something with the ini and I wasn't even able to edit it. Strange.

Second, when you get the "bad file or number" problem, open the ini and ONLY CHANGE THE DRIVE LETTER of the directory NOT the whole line. If you type in "c:\soldat" you may still get the same error. If I can remember it should say "*drive-letter*:\soldat-beta" or something like that.

Change the letter then save and that should be that.

Good luck. :) I edit at school too during breaks.

I've updated PW. If you load a map and it's invisible, select all the polys and change the opacity in the properties window to 100%. Maps that are invisible in PolyWorks will also appear invisible in the next version of Soldat, so they should be edited and recompiled.

Thanks a lot for the updates Anna!

Needless to say it's a real pity that all these maps will have to get recompiled. I can barely imagine all the time we'll spend recompiling more than 200 maps... >:(
Do any of you know why this bug occurs anyway? At least it's good news that invisible polygons may finally work fine in the game...

By the way, did you also get the weird errors when opening maps like Bigfalls? "Error loading map Key is not unique in collection error loading scenery elements"... and then lots of "Error rendering in Direct3D D3DERR_INVALIDCALL" every second.
Oh well, this is probably not the right place to beta test it, just out of curiosity though...

OH MY GOD

I can't wait for Soldat 1.3.2! ALPHA POLYGONS!

Edit: Light range is nice too.
Title: Re: Soldat PolyWorks v1.4.0.8
Post by: Anna on February 03, 2007, 07:46:06 pm
@GluLm: Earlier versions of PW didn't set the vertex alpha so it was always 0 (an oversight on my part). I fixed the error with BigFalls, which was caused when there were duplicates of the first scenery in the scenery list, it'll be fixed in the next version.

edit: I can probably make a tool that would go through all the maps in a maps folder and set the vertex alphas to be opaque.

If it's in C#, does that mean you need the 1.1 .NET Framework which can't be installed in win98se?

Direct3D D3DERR_INVALIDCALL

My colors are set to 32 bit, and it still does this.  It did it for a while, then it worked fine, and now it's screwed up again.  It stopped working after I restarted.  It sounds like I'm having the same issue GluLm is having... maybe?  Is there an error with my map?  I can open other maps just fine, just not mine.  If I uploaded it or sent it over email maybe could somebody convert it so I can continue editing?

Thanks!

Here is a technique that's made possible by the new vertex transparency feature:

Hi, I have an error like that posted by fishfood.

Direct3D D3DERR_INVALIDCALL when I open some maps, try to insert spawnpoints, colliders, sceneries etc.
I tried all; uninstall/install DirectX (i have 9.0c), install new video card drivers (S3 ProSavage).
I have also tried to download newest D3DX81AB.dll (I think this is for Directx 8.1) (D3DX92AB.dll) from "JEDI Delphi Project" but I ever recieve same error.
I searched on Google but I only found patches specified for the games that people have problems.
ah.. sorry for my English :D

off topic post scriptum: I can't use MapMakerPlus too, it returns a strange error.. "???????."

I often save the working map as map01.PMS to map02.PMS. If Polyworks had a function that saves the current file as the serials when it saves, it would be convenient. The hotkey would be good too.

According to your palette panel (opacity textbox) you were creating compeitely transparent polygons. To create visible polygons set opacity to 100 (it will affect sceneries and brush as well). Also you can change opacity of existing polygons and sceneries by selecting them and setting desired opacity value in Properties panel.

@Windows Vista users: If you're getting an error that says one of the components is missing or invalid, you can try registering it like this:

Make sure you have administrative rights.
Go to C:\windows\system32, right click cmd.exe, and click "Run As Administrator."
Type in regsvr32 comdlg32.ocx (or whatever the name of the files is).

edit: With version 1.4.0.16, if you get the error that says:

Quote
Direct3D initialization failed
Error creating Direct3D objects
ActiveX component can't create object

do the above procedure with the dx8vb.dll file (search for and download it if it doesn't exist on your computer).

Thanks to Dro on IRC for working with me to fix this.

Also, users running Vista may experience redraw problems with the Depth Map, Colour Vertices, and selection tools, causing your mouse to leave a choppy black trail. To fix this, you need to disable Desktop Composition for Soldat PolyWorks. Right-click on the application, select the properties, go to the Compatibility tab, and then check "Disable Desktop Composition". Just hit apply and you at this point you should be good to go.

In theory it would let you sketch a map so you can create some ideas then align the polygons to your sketch. Unfortunately, there isn't much options for the sketch tool to make it useful, and it crashes when used after a few seconds. Try to avoid using it, as it's better and safer to sketch and load a compatible image file from some outside paint program.

Found a bug: When I try to open the newest version of PolyWorks, I get an error message that says, "Error Loading; Error Setting Directories; Bad File Name or Number."  Meanwhile, all that loads is a black background with green borders and sparse text on the bottom, the entire program doesn't respond to anything and cannot be closed except by using the Task Manager.

Coincidentally, I only downloaded the new version because 1.4.0.10 freaked out whenever I attempted to open a particular map of mine.

I think this is because I forgot to clear my settings from the polyworks.ini before I uploaded it ::)
You can try redownloading it (make sure it's not cached) or change the first line in the ini to your Soldat directory and clear the next two lines.

Don't know when the next update will be, but, here's a neat suggestion:

The ability to view only a certain type of polygon! Meaning, I could uncheck 'normal', but still see 'doesn't collide' (and any other type still checked).

Would make some stuff more conveniant, but if it doesn't get added, oh well. =O

And because I know some of you use a different word...

Check = Tick
Uncheck = Untick

I dunno if it has been suggested before, but please add a "Create Poly"-mode where the poly is ONLY textured with the area of the texture chosen in the Textures window (As managed as in the Quad-mode).

Nevertheless waaay better than mapmaker, corresponding to the controls, the workspace arrangement (this is really handy) and of course the lighting functions, I knew PW was the right choice.  [retard]

Changing the dimension of your map is easy. Make sure you have your vertice select tool chosen from the tool window, turn off scenery, then go Edit-Select All, in your map properties window enter your percentages for x and y scale. You have to enter one at a time, so set the amount for x first and hit enter, then do the same for y. Remember tho, this will scale your texture. Come to think of it, I haven't ever scaled a poly with texture turned off. I'll have to try that in a bit to find out if it affects the texture. hmm...

Gdi+ is a microsoft graphics component. Either you're using Win2k or an older version of WinXP. To fix this problem should be quite easy. Go to a site like www.dlldump.com (http://www.dlldump.com) and get it there. Then install. Tho, I read on another forum that you install it into the program's directory, not the system folder. For Polyworks, I couldn't tell ya there. I'm just starting programming, so I'm not knowlegable enough about dlls, yet. However - trial and error, one of the directories should fix it.

Problem with multi-texturing:

When I select part of the texture, and press ctrl-f (or fix texture) it shows the whole texture, not just that part i wanted. Messing with the texture alignment in the tool box has had very poor resaults and is not time efficient, and the texture tool just moves or warps the texture.
Title: Re: Soldat PolyWorks v1.4.0.17
Post by: zyxstand on July 04, 2007, 11:03:51 am
I think I'd have a good suggestion for a good new feature for working w/ textures:
First you select which polygons to work on (full polygons).  Then you click on the texture-tool: at the most-left corner of the polygon a square-ouitline pops-up the size of the texture.  Now you can drag the sides of this square and the texture will be stretched accordingly on all the selected polygons.

I think this would make texture-stretching a little easier for most people to do.  Perhaps you could also make it so you can copy and paste the square-position of a polygon's texture so you can apply it to another polygon (and make changes to only IT).
Also, shouldn't it be possible to copy and paste polygons and/or scenery (and light)?
Title: Re: Soldat PolyWorks v1.4.0.17
Post by: amb2010 on July 05, 2007, 01:02:32 am
Id also like to see the multi texturing to be easier (@Heen: You also need to use Textured Quad option for poly's for it to be one texture), i guess a simple way would be to select the poly's to change then maybe have a tool to assign what part of the texture?

@zyxstand: You can copy and paste a poly or scenery not sure about lighting, select what you want to copy then hit Ctrl + V and then it copies what was selected.

Hello, a few months ago i got PW to work on my XP computer, but have since bought a Vista one. I have the latest version of directx, and have all the correct dlls (original error was that i was missing a dll from system 32). However, whenever i try running PW, i get "Direct 3d initialization failed. Error creating 3d objects. Activex component cant create object." I click OK, then "Error loading. Error initializing DInput. Object variable or With block variable not set" clicking OK again opens up a black PW (interfaces are there), but it says "Object variable or With variable not set" many times. Maximizing PW and getting a runtime error is the only way to close it.

Does it just not work on vista?

Thanks

Well, I need help.
When I try to open up PolyWorks, I get an error message. This one:

After that, there is a "Send Error Report" or "Don't Send" message. You know, the one that says the program is being unresponsive?
Anyways, then it just closes.
I think i have the correct Dir path in polyworks.ini. My Soldat folder is as follows, C:\Soldat\ and the path for PolyWorks is C:\Soldat\
I have no clue what is wrong, because it says that the path is not found, yet the path is correct.
I could really use some help. I really would like to put this program to good use.

Thanks. CK | Jesus

I've discontinued development of PW and released the source code, check the first post for the download link. Be warned: it's pretty badly coded, disorganized, very few comments, etc. Feel free to do whatever you want with it.

Also I'm no longer providing support for PolyWorks, so I won't be responding to posts or PMs or emails asking for help, and I'm not available on IRC.

I have a problem with a map. Perhaps somebody can help me.
you can download the map under http://www.vision-synthesis.de/a/ctf_troja.zip

The problem is: Wen the map was play on a server You can connect it an you can see the map. But in few seconds you will be disconnect from the server with the advice: "You have the wrong card version". But it is the right.

The next problem is that the Card is bigger than she should be.

I think the problem had something to do that I have in a older version make to many collision points. I have remove the points but wen I play the card all the point was in the map. So I have move the Horse along left from the points. Then I can play it on the Computer with out the collisions points but now the map was so big and unplayable on the server.

Please help - I don't want make the map new. It was very much work.

So, is anybody going to pickup the Polyworks project? (too lazy to read to see if somebody is)
If anybody does.. i got 3 suggestions for you..
-having it say the cursor's X,Y on the map wherever its pointing
-having it say the X,Y of objects like it does for polygons
-and making it so if u select more than one thing, it takes the average of those points' positions and says that..

what does skecth tool do? ???

Date Posted: March 24, 2007, 02:04:28 PM
??? :0 :9

Am practicing with Polyworks for the first time now.  I have run into the Sketch crash a few times.  Seems like PW will only handle so much sketching.

I REALLY like being able to toss down some visual notes for myself with the Sketch tool, then adjust my polys to fit what is in my head.  Is there a way I can CLEAR my sketches from memory?

I mean... i just want to be able to toss down a couple of sketchlines, adjust my map to those and then clear my Sketches so I can then Sketch out a couple of lines on some other part of the map.  Adjust, tweak, clear my sketches, repeat.  Can this be done?  Seems like it would be a handy update to PW at large, but I'm also very willing to hear if there's some geeky advanced workaround.  Like, could I save my creation and is there some file i could delete to get a clean sketchboard back?

Thanks in advance... Step right up ladies and gents!  Help the noob, win a prize!

To those that say that it isn't compatible/not working with vista. Try changing the compatibility to XP SP2 and make sure you run it as an administrator(might solve your problem).

Yes. There is an official Map Maker(on the official site). It doesn't have the fancy menus and options like polyworks but it's a great starting tool for beginners.

Ok, it seems like some people need it, so here's a:

MINI SKETCH TOOL TUTORIAL

To start, the sketch tool was added in th elater versions of Polyworks, and is used to sketch ideas for maps as well as make notes to yourself while mapping. The downfall of the sketch tool, is that prolonged use causes polyworks to crash. Prolonged human exposure to the sketch tool hasn't been tested, and may be dangerous to your health.

It appears that the sketch tool draws using vectors, or think straight lines smaller than a pixel. (I could be very wrong here) There conect to eachother to form psuedo curves, much like ones does with polygons.

There are three basic functions of the sketch tool: Draw, Move, and Erase.

Draw
The sketch tool's basic function, this tool is used by selecting the sketch too and clicking the mouse on your map. Used to sketch out your notes/layout. Your best option is to, instead of drawing one continuous like, is to draw a series of small rough lines that are more easily identifiable when zoomed out. This helps prevent crashing.

Move
Ctrl+Click. Moves the vertices of the vectors.

Delete
Alt+Click. Deletes the vectors.

It runs on Vista, all you have to do is download dx8vb.dll and register it via command prompt.

The main problem with polyworks on Vista though is that the scenery graphics won't appear at all, just blank rectangles.

Found a small bug:
When having placed the 1st or 2nd vertice of a polygon (so another vertice is still "floating" at your cursor) while having selected another polygon, if you press the Delete button on your keyboard, Polyworks violently crashs with a bunch of error messages. This made me loose about an hour of work on a map ;)

09. I get this error when I try to run PolyWorks: System Error &H8007007E (-2147024770). The specified module could not be found. (Or any 'missing file' type errors.)

Make sure these files exist in your WindowsSystem32 folder: MBMouse.ocx, COMDLG32.OCX, mscomctl.ocx, msvbvm60.dll, dx8vb.dll, scrrun.dll. The first three are included in the PolyWorks zip, the others can be found with google. If putting them in the WindowsSystem32 folder doesn't work try resistering the missing files: start -> run, type in regsvr32 name_of_file.dll_or_ocx.

so i need to goodle thes files dlowload them and stike them ins system 32 folder just so i can run poly works?

I have a little problem with PW.
I got it running on Vista, but NOTHING works on it. As soon as I try to do anything, it says either that some file is missing or that it couldn't start up because of something and blahblahblah.

Here's some pics of what shows up:

When I just click on the black window, which is the main window, or the map window, of PW: http://i36.tinypic.com/erzud4.jpg

The first window that comes up after I try closing PW: http://i33.tinypic.com/xcu26r.jpg
The second one: http://i37.tinypic.com/4kadeq.jpg

When I try opening a compiled map: http://i33.tinypic.com/vo3o1w.jpg

So, if anyone knows what to do, please help :D

I wonder how hard it would be to update the code to VB.net. I think then, it would work well on Vista, though I know nothing of the bloated OSX ripoff version of Windows. I love VB6 (started learning VB6 and VB.net 3 weeks ago), but it seems almost near impossible to get gifs as scenery working. I only got em to show up in the scenery window. Lol. I think that too may be a lot easier in VB.net, though I could be mistaken. Just in VB.net there seems to better support for textures and images. From what I know of in 3 weeks anyway. :P

That is called a multi-texture. The following two topics might help:

When you compile the map, the inside gradient will get just as big.

I hope this helps. Have fun mapping!

Dude, calm down. I didn't meant enrage you :/ and I don't think I'm much more correct.. but saying 100% implies to some people in most cases literally 'all', which is not the case, and I wanted to avoid some idiot saying it in a more ridiculous way. Lets not bash each other here, just drop it... It doesn't help my case that I misread the initial message with the word 'almost' :P.

Ok, firstly, there is hope. I have it running on win7 64bit right now.

Pretty sure it is to do with the link it has with soldat, you need to set the directories for soldat stuff in the preferences. Seems like you may have trouble though seeing as you have to use task manager to close it, so you may need to do it manually in polyworks.ini, it is the first three keys.
