Title: News on Soldat 1.5.0
Post by: Michal Marcinkowski on November 03, 2007, 10:03:11 am
A couple weeks ago the Soldat game development team has grown. They already were working on the server code for a long time, so it was about time they got the client code. EnEsCe and Chrisgbk are working on the new Soldat version. My contribution to this version will be limited because I am focused on my new game link-dead (more info on my blog (http://mm.soldat.pl/)). There is already an enormous amount of work done, you can expect a lot of new stuff added, it will be worth waiting for. EnEsCe will have more details on specific additions and fixes in a while.

Edit by Chrisgbk: Topic updated to say 1.5.0 instead of 1.4.3.

It should also be mentioned that we're doing a public beta for this version, so everyone will be able to help test it.  The beta testers will test it privately for a week or so to work out any larger issues that will keep it from being tested effectively.  Once the beta is public, beta testers will work to manage the bugs in the bug tracker (http://soldat.pl/mantis) and help to organize the bug reporting forums.

I'm putting great hopes in this new version, as I've totally stopped playing Soldat since 1.4.x.

I looked on EC's website. And saw an animation video saying that there would be .gif's allowed as scenery. If that's true, Soldat will be ruined. Imagine the lag.

ROTFL? Scenery (as a .gif too) would be downloaded so it would be displayed by your PC not by server.

Yeah, at the worst it would cause some slowdown on older computers. But it would create some interesting mapping possibilities, none of which I can think of at this time.

Allready fx_P-cloud scenery FPS lags like hell on weaker machines(in big groups lags even the middle-class ones)
I guess big gifs would lag it even more.

Yeah... not really good principally because amateur mappers are going to try to experiment with them... and you surely know where this goes.

Well... I believe this is going to be an interesting version to see - first one from enesce + chris. But, I don't want to see too many features at the same time though. I do not wish you to impress us too much all at the beginning because it will be harder to keep up with the current motivation to work on soldat later on.

Don't use the word lag if you're talking about computer slowdown. It confuses people.

Don't use the word lag use the phrase 'video lag' cause it is lag but merly by your video card and not your net card. It confuses -Vis- :P

Besides I'm not looking forward to this new version TOO much because I like the video lag bug from the flames. I wanted a new skill in Hexer to use this bug to make a new skill effect: TimeShift

I looked on EC's website. And saw an animation video saying that there would be .gif's allowed as scenery. If that's true, Soldat will be ruined. Imagine the lag.
A few important points:
1) the gifs are rendered on the client machine.  This is not a hard thing to do by any nearly modern computer and any "lag" created by it will be purely local (the same way that big maps with lots of sceneries now lag a lot on computers with weaker video cards)
2) Just because the feature is there doesn't mean it is going to be abused/overused.  Sure, some mappers will make maps that use a ton of animated sceneries, but don't instantly think that every map is going to have hundreds of animations.  To say that this is going to ruin the game is alarmist and pessimistic.

There are tens or hundreds of possibilities created by this feature being added to the game, just give the community time after 1.4.3 is out and we'll see the community devs/artists/mappers work their magic and innovate, creating some amazing things.

Title: Re: News on Soldat 1.4.3
Post by: KamikazeDuck on November 05, 2007, 05:17:00 pm
It's great that we'll finally be able to use gifs in maps.

Flashing lights, flames, moving generators, moving water, dripping caves, fish darting around in water, smoke, vehicles vibrating in idle, swaying ropes, sections of maps which can be seen at one point and then covered at another and more! Now all we need is ambient sounds so we can hear all these things happening...

Hope it all goes well guys.

Don't get your hopes up about GIF scenery. Anna is being an ignoramus. She read, but ignored my PM's to her to get Polyworks to support GIF's, as a result of that there is no way for people to add GIF's to their maps.

And yeah, I guess ill post my current changes when its ready.

EnEsCe, dont forget to add the ''Headshot!'' text where the distance/richocet/time is displayed.
Its a must.

Also if possible, add the killing spree messages. Soldat could have something different and more funny than the ones that exist already... or the defaults:

-Killing spree 5
-Rampage 10
-Dominating 15
-Unstoppable 20
-Godlike 25
-Wicked sick 30

it is fun to see how people can transform a negative reply to a positive. as they said no weapons will be added and then somebody says it was suggested for 1.4, now somebody thinks it will be added.

anyhow I love that there will be a headshot sound which I have wanted for a long time. now I almost think this should be 1.5 as there is a lot of new things both in the map format and in the gameplay. but still I don't know how much is changed.

Thank god for that.  I really need to thank Anna for doing that.  Soldat is already losing the original feeling of default style mapping like MM's work.  Now these days, all you see is massive crappy Trenchwars maps that murder FPS on old systems.  There's no sense what this could do.

Also based on what I've already seen, this version really doesn't look like it is going to impress me.  What's with the new headshot feature?  Is it really necessary?

I thought that too... Major would be like changing the whole thing such as graphics... menu style... gameplay... effects... moddability... engine...

You think you could add 'Mic In-Game' like when u join a game in Halo you can just talk. It also shows if someone has a mic or not. Could that be implemented?

Sure, 1.5 sounds great. When it comes to Gifs, it would make the map seem more interactive, well more alive at least. It would put me far behind in mapping...I don't usually make scenery. Whether or not it's implimented, I could care less.

He's right, Hershey. No one knows when it'll be out at the moment, so to repeatingly asking the same question isn't going to rush the answer. Also, at no point will an official come out and state "there's x amount of time 'till the public beta is released". It's just going to happen.

So settle down. We're all anticipating the new version, but you're just gonna have to wait and see. Like a christmaspresent, yeah?
Title: Re: News on Soldat 1.4.3
Post by: El_Spec on November 09, 2007, 07:33:35 pm
Better to wait a sufficient amount of time to make sure the new version is perfect as possible.  Then to release it so quickly and have it be any other crummy version with bugs.

Haha.. oh you kids. You're so cute :) It's got nothing to do with me being a betatester. That title doesn't earn me a higher rank compared to you, it only means I get to test the betas before the game is let out, or in this case before the betas made public.

If and when I deliver you critique, I do it because I think you're wrong about something that's my soldaforumsgiven right, and if you can't handle it, you really shouldn't be here.

I just wanna ask you. Is it posible to add in the new version of Soldat or new version of server some feature that allows you to join server only when you have default (not-moded) version of soldat ?I think this will be very usable function for administrators of leagues or tournaments where you need fair play.

Thanks

Although I would be pleased, I doubt it would happen.
Too much coding required. THE MAIN WEAPONS ARE FINE ALREADY! The pros will have to adjust so much, I doubt it will ever happen.

I'm very proud of you guys. I don't really have much time to play Soldat anymore, but I am definitely looking forward to see the progress on this. Good job mates. Its always so interesting to hear about new features. It always livens up the community. And it always seems like theres a new version coming near the holidays. I remember I would be on here like every day during my Christmas break watching the falling snowmen soldiers just waiting for new news. lol

Anyways... Good job guys. Wish I could enjoy your work more often Smiley I'll be checking in.

Exactly. Take your time but finish as son as you can. And MM, don't spend too much time on this version because I want to play Link-Dead! Good Luck Team!
(no... im no cheerleader... but I go out with one :D )

MM isn't working on this one very much, it is mostly EnEsCe and ChrisGBK.  I'm doing a bit of work on one of the new features, but not nearly as much as EnEsCe and Chris.

-it makes it a surprise
-its more exciting
-gives you something to look forward too

Why ask when its coming out when they are releasing a public beta and im sure that between the beta and the actual version is going to be awhile correct me if im wrong.

Greetings moron!

Our job does not include programming or the like. people like EnEsCe, Bricks, Chris and MM do that. All we do is test the nonpublic releases for bugs so that they can be adjustet for public use. And no, we don't know about the releasedate either. The version hasn't been finished yet, so no one knows when it's going to be out. This is not some massive blizzard game that has deadlines and what not. It's just a cozy litle game, crafted by private people who have more to their everyday than sitting in front of their computers to make fuckers like you happy.

So shut up, and get the fuck out of here f you can't take the excitement.

The bottom line is this:
It will be out when it's ready.
It will not be PUBLIC this year.
The beta testers DO NOT have a copy of Soldat 1.5.0, and they do not[/will not] know an exact release date or period of time. The only thing beta testers currently have is a change log for 1.4.2 -> 1.5.0.
And this is being developed purely during spare time, not as a day job; it's just a hobby. So don't expect a bug free version etc or a speedy release after an announcement.

Okay.. Since you don't seem to get it, I will feed it to you by spoon: I, echo_trail, am not a part of the soldat programming team. As an official betatester, my job is to only test the new material, and give feedback there on. Nothing more, nothing less. I do not see myself as a higher power than you, at least not based on my soldatforums title.

And the point of NSC's post was not to bring anything new out, it was just to sum things up.

I agree. Ive been wondering the same. Answers please :'(
The demos are nice and all, but some things dont come out right. For instance, when people get blown up, in the demo, they just turn to a dead guy instead of blowin up and flying everywhere. I once made a demo to show me getting direct hits on dummy bots using clusters, but it didnt work right because of this.

Well to be completely honest i think they should make some interfaces that you can choose from and use even if your not registered =/ so you can click a botton on your settings and your different interface is used in game
i think there should be some new weapons too...
and i think they should replace the minigun ,, no one ever uses it in there servers anyway so whats the point in having it in soldat....
And 1 more thing .. it would be great to have some more soldat music bloody soil,
gore, and uhh the other one forgot what its called , i think they should add onto that.

Search in the Modded Interfaces section or just register and show some respect.

Well i will just wait for the version to come. I wont be here asking "when it comes out??" or something like that. The certain thing we know is that it will have some features. If its 1.4.3 or 1.5, well, that isn't very important for now, we shall see when it comes out. Its not the first time im viewing this topic but i might missed something that was said here. MM is focused right now on link-dead, so i don't know what to expect really.

for this version I hope they have fixed the broken netcode. and actually tries to do some bug fixes, as you can start a delay before spawn (but not with knife) and that you can get half your body up into the roof. and fixing the netcode (which is worth saying again). I hope this is fixed else the new version will be shit as all versions have been after 1.2.1.

What do you mean ? ...I quess he ment just weapon graphic not the whole concept of the weapon as firepower, clip amount, firespeed and so on. That could be implemented. Because without anything new for offer soldat will die (not totally because soldat is so cool it wouldnt die never ever) under big wheels of LInK-Dead

He didn't mean that you must make a new complete weapon set for another team.

You should be capable of chaning like Bravo teams Ruger damage = 700, and that would only count for bravo team and not alpha, so u can change different shits on bouth teams guns.

It really should be done. New mods need diferent .inis and gfx. It's really important.

Actually I'd like to know aswell. Wasn't MM about to release a fix version to fix some minor bugs and the maps few weeks after the release of 1.4.2? Why didn't he do it? More and more the release is delayed, more and more there will be working hacks for example.

So true, the more time you give hackers to get to the roots of soldat 1.4.2 the more chance they wil hack faster in 1.5

Good point claw

Every new release they need to do sniffing again, and again, and again. If there is one release every 2 years, they got plenty of time to get the stuff, and share with others = easier for newbies to get into hacking. If new version is released every month, I don't think they really bother sharing the stuff, and some of them don't even bother starting to sniff it all, since the joy will only last for few weeks.

Releasing new version for example every month is not way to terminate hackers. They have ready source code, then they only need find new addresses and after one hour they can release new hack for new version.I hope this version will be without bugs, but it need more time to test.

The way to get rid of hackers is to ask server hosts to lower the required vote percentage to kick and/or get Soldat players to grow some balls and kick hackers, even if they're on their team.  The biggest cause for hackers not getting kicked is "honest", spineless Soldat players who won't kick them.

Lowering vote% is stupid. Then few people can takeover servers for 1v1's.

Thats because BE somewhat reduces obvious hacks, but there are alot more hackers than you think, you just don't know they are hacking.

I think that, as well as the fact that people are more afraid of using obvious hacks because of BE, are the reasons we don't see them anymore.  Though some people ubern00bs certainly still use them.

Emos have nothing to do with the subject.
Wait, it might make sense for you, since you probably think there's actually a fashion mode called "emo".
And no, I'm not fat. I'm actually quite slim.
I look better in normal clothes than a puffed-up retard in pink-black stripes.

Are you saying that emo is not a fashion? LIES.
Ofcourse it is. It is a fashion mode and a music style. It sucks.
Title: Re: News on Soldat 1.5.0
Post by: Mitak on January 17, 2008, 05:19:44 pm
Emo is actually an inside condition of the soul. But nowadays it's so spoiled that more people are fooled and think it's rather a fashion mode/music style than a soul condition.
The mode does exist, but that's just a way to earn money from it.
You know who to blame. Starts with the letter J :D

Theres no way my computer will run 1.5.0
Check out my system stats:
224 MB RAM- 2.00Ghz
My max disk drive space is about 4 GB.
Internal videocard - SiSFX660 - That video card is probably older than me.
If I run too many windows at once ( Usually like 5) it will crash.
It's a wonder it runs 1.3.1

Now it's a Sapphire HD 3870 (512 MB) and it's running worse @_@
1.5 GB RAM and 2.8 GHz

Yeah, But it's kind of like this;

Developers>Beta testers>open Beta (Aka, Release to general public.)
So you'll still get it before me right :p

And is that how it will go or will there be a few more steps to it?
Like after the testers have played it throughly, Will it go back to the Dev team for a bug fix, Or straight onto a general release?

That is the general chain of command as far as I'm told, but I'm not sure how this thing comes down. It's my first version as betatester, so I have yet to see it for myself. But I suppose the way you put is pretty accurate, at least that's how I expect it to be. There will be a closed beta release before the public, of course.

Which i imagine would consist of, Mostly you guys(Beta testers) And possibly a few more people?
Or just you guys, I'm confused :s
I Figure a closed beta as a sign up, as in you sign up to test it, And it consists of a list with X amount of spots, And people keep putting down names until it's full.
What do you mean by closed beta?
Title: Re: News on Soldat 1.5.0
Post by: echo_trail on January 30, 2008, 07:44:04 am
Yeah, the betatesters and probably the moderators. There could be an additional few, I wouldn't know.
As for a closed beta.. it's your usual betaversion being released to a selected few(mentioned above) to test it out before, a week later or so depending on the amount of fatal flaws in it, it's released to the public for testing and tryout.

But no, it won't be some sort of signup thing. A new section opened on the forums not so long ago, remember? Dedicated to public betatesting of the upcoming version. Only when the version is released to the public will you be able to participte in the testing.

...Does that make sence?

Yeah, I wasn't clear on what you defined Closed beta.
but Another thing, Why is it taking so long (not that i'm complaining) I mean unless they are overhauling the entire coding of they game it shouldn't be too major, so with the undefined release date it brings two things to mind;
1.) They are indeed over-hauling the entire game, code and everything, the works.
2.) They are either waiting for something/someone to do something, Or they want it as perfect as they can get it, as perfect as humanly possible, Not that enesce is human or anything, Damn machine...
Title: Re: News on Soldat 1.5.0

Well, you pretty much said it yourself.. There's a lot of new features being implemented in this new version, that's no secret, and NSC is only one man mostly in charge of it all. He has personal issues matters to attend to, as well as everyone else, and christmas over newyear is never an easy time when it comes to that. There are so many things that needs doing and whatnot. :)

But it seems to me that he's really giving it his all to make it out sometime soon, which is really more than any of us can ask for. I think maybe we all got supriced at the shere scale of it, and how much work had to be put into it.

But to be honest with you, I'm not exactly sure what's keeping him. I know he's working on a lot of fresh stuff for soldat, but even we betatesters are kept unknowing of some of it. He stated in the betaforum that "I think for once the beta testers can have a surprise aswell", so who knows what kind of beast his coming up with :P
Title: Re: News on Soldat 1.5.0

Sigh, More surprises!

I'm just trying to understand why it's been prolonged, I know it's only one guy, and i respect that he just didn't blow it off and go to a bar.
The fact that he's doing it on his own just shows that he wants to see it blossom into the violent, Gore loving child he has cared for in MM's Absence.

If i wore a hat, i'd tip it, But i don't So too bad i guess.
I'm glad to hear he's still doing it, Even on his own.
I thought there was more then one person working on it.

It's allready possible to use other interfaces even if not registrered. All you have to do is enter the "custom interface" in your soldat folder, and transfer whichever one you like to "interface-gfx". Sort of like you would with any weaponmod.

Often times, that's what it turns out to be. I don't think 1.4 changed very much. Obviously it left the game virtually the same. Small changes which were nice. Meh, I couldn't complain against the upgrade.

Just a suggestion, mabey implement accents like accents aigu or droit or circumflex and so forth, im not sure if thats only for version in frnech or whatever but its a small thing that'd be nice to have in all or english versions for names/aliases n other stuff, it'd a small yet cosy addition.

No, there won't be any vehicles. Instead, we will be getting a new weapon that launches a giant wheel that will crush the other team without stopping.

More INF maps, please.

Will it be more bugless if we add a fuckload of features which we didn't test?
And how do you know if it will be more bugfree if we haven't tested anything.

That's not really that long.  This community has seen far longer wait times between versions.  Oh, and your buddy can't possibly have a clue as to when the new version comes out, us beta testers don't even have a guess.

No vehicles... well, except for dragonflies.. with turrets on them. I appreciate all the hard work all the testers and coders are doing, but don't add too many features. Soldat is already awesome as is. I definitely do support animated .gif scenery though. Keep up the good work and also thanks for your hard work in balancing Soldat and maintaining an enjoyable game. :)

I see where you're coming from, but this is simply a thread more or less "keeping track on the progress of" the next version.  Not to mention that it's no doubt going to take more time than usual because Michal has two other games on his hands as well.  EnEsCe will no doubt make up for it I assume.  He's done incredible work with the server already, I imagine he's putting just as much effort into the client as well.

Animaterd sceneries, that is awsome. I alreday have some ideas. =D

Would increase modability, yes - although the chances of that happening are slim at best. I won't mind staying with a-sploding heads anyway.

Poly works doesn't allow animated sceneries just yet, so we'll have to wait for an up date of poly works.

PolyWorks is open-source.  Anyone who is good enough with Visual Basic 6 can possibly code it.  Unless someone creates another map maker and implements this feature first.

Well, it's kinda hard to balance INF maps. Bravo will always have the upperhand, since their role technically is to just sit aorund and camp. I see what you're going at, but I don't think anything can be done about it.
Title: Re: News on Soldat 1.5.0

There is a solution to this and its simply designing the maps better so that the attackers have more routes to use, making it harder for the defenders to cover every opening.

It's always either over balanced or under balanced, so i think it's pretty good, it's not so much the maps as it is your own ham handed-ness.

The maps are fairly balanced, But there are a few really old maps that aren't even close to being fair, along with a few new ones that kick your arse until you're using it as a pillow.

I'm looking forward to the new version since I heard there are going to be many new features and the weapons to be balanced further (hopefully). Yes, I'd rather wait for a proper release than a piece of rushed or being plain lazy to do updates (like it was in another game I used to play before Soldat).

they should make heli's. that would be wicked. They would need to be small and would only have a Minimi attatched on the bottom and it could be shot off. When the heli is shot enough it crashes, but the player wont be able to get out. The player can jump out with parachute while the heli is airborne. New maps could be built. Bigger with more space to allow room to fly, and there should be an option to enable/diable vehicles. That would be wicked

It seems my estimates are way more accurate than EnEsCe's "We are on schedule".

Seriously, people, calm down. No Soldat 1.5 coming before the summer. Possibly after the summer, and then it will be the "open beta", which has been planned for ages already. And remember how 1.4.3 was supposed to be a "quick release to fix maps" etc.

They would "fit", all of those things would "fit" and more than that - they would make the game more awesome. Technical restrictions is the problem (coding and shit).  BTW - I would "go back" to Battlefield 2 if my computer would run it.

Let's stop arguing. You are like the fox who couldn't get the grapes and said they are sour anyway. That's bullbollocks. Vehicles and movable polys are the best ideas for Soldat. They would add so many new possibilities and it would be so much more fun. It just isn't possible, but the idea itself is great.

Rather delete some extras to reduce the lag. Thanks. And delete that fucking "anti"-lag stuff. Since about 1.4 or even earlier lag increased, imo. The worst thing are the bullets: if it just lags a lil bit you can't see the enemie's bullets, and if you are quite fast and wanna knife somebody it doesnt do anything, just lil bit blood and the knife falls down. etc etc...

they should make heli's. that would be wicked.
Go back to battlefield 2.

Or just wait for LINKDEATH.

And wishes and ideas are in another section.

Hope the 1.5 will be nice and the new features will be bugfree.

Vehicles = Phail. It'd be too chaotic and instead of people fighting over the flag, we'll be fighting over who gets the vehicles.
No I mean, think about it. There'd be more whine, flaming, and there would be more absurd suggestions in the forum. There'll be people whining about the m79 AND the vehicles. Maps would have to be redone as it would need huge maps(A huge tank in ctf_Ash?) and there'd be more lag. Also, the physics dont even match the vehicles (think about a huge tank falling down mid section in Voland). If you like that kind of stuff, play Battlefield or something.

Now, I support more different types of polies though.

cunchy's right. We already have enough people bitching about the M79. Last thing we need is people lumbering around in tanks blowing people up left and right. Besides, the only thing in the Soldat arsenal that can fight a tank is the M72. Maybe the Barrett, but that's a stretch.
Title: Re: News on Soldat 1.5.0

Soldat is a well balanced game for what it is without vehicles. A skilled player can jump, run and rocket accross any map in mere seconds. Why would you want a vehicle? If for instance you wanted to run people over.. that's fine, but you'd get naded, m79'd and smg'd up the ass so fast. Soldat is fast and furious. Vehicles are slow and stupid in comparison to all the maneuverability and flight of soldats. Vehicles are useful in games where the player does not have these extra abilities when on foot (flight and speed from flight/jumping) such as Halo. Plus the maps are big enough to support vehicles. If you cut a Halo map in half (lengthways) and looked at the action from the side.. you'd realize in comparison, that the vehicle size as compared to the entire map size is even smaller than the size of a soldat compared to a Soldat map.

Soldat is a game that is specifically little soldiers blowing the shittocky out of eachother - AND THAT'S IT. If ya want vehicles in a side scroller, wait for Link Dead or play some of the other Soldat clones (which, unfortunately, are not as popular).

That is all. This is the end of vehicles ever being suggested in Soldat again.

I hope to hell that in 1.5 soldat will read interfaces and font configurations from the mods folder.

There's no point in suggesting that in the suggestion section of the forum because nobody understands what a good idea it is unless they are a modder. And everybody is too busy supporting crap ideas.

The developers look there frequently, and the beta testers are always reading through there.  The beta testers can then suggest features from there when development is beginning.

Your video card is most likely the problem.  1.4.0 and upward changed how fonts and other things are handled by the video card and some cheap/crappy cards don't support it (like integrated SiS garbage)
