Currently, you can only view demos from the version that it was recorded from. To view older demos, you would have to install the version in which it was recorded from. This is a huge hassle and it makes older demos nearly unwatchable.
I'm sure that this isn't easy to code and older versions uses different coding formats of some sort, especially when 1.4 was released that completely changed how it works. I'm assuming this can't be done with certain versions, but it can be done within a version span. Such as demos from 1.4 to 1.4.2 can be viewable.
Comments, thoughts, ideas, or suggestions?

Never going to happen. It simply can not, and will not, work.

It needs to happen. Why was the code changed in the first place?

I've deleted so many demos when I was going through them to send to TBC... I remember recording some really cool stuff back in previous versions, but I'm not going to reinstall 1.3.1 just to check them out.
Like TBC said, this really needs to happen. It'll make movie making and demo-playing so much easier!

Can you be specific as to how this is impossible for it to work?Â
If I remember correctly, this was once possible I think for demos played in 1.2.1 that were recorded from 1.2. If that is possible, then why is it isn't now?

Some versions, such as 1.2 -> 1.2.1 were possible to play because those versions had NO major changes or NETCODE changes. That is not the case for most of the newer versions, or the next version.

So go out and delete those demos you just made because you can't view them come 1.5 :)

You can always download the right client version to play them. [retard]

I think diamond demo player supports all versions.
If not then get the corrosponding version.
dowload with link

extract with winzip.
Place in soldat directory, next to soldat.exe
open and enjoy. :)

Diamond only plays videos of the version you have. It's simply a command-line parameter editor; it launches the soldat you have with the settings you choose.
