Title: Shade the outline! 2
Post by: Hair|Trigger on May 02, 2008, 07:34:11 am
Sorry about this.  Stupid forum's screwed up when I was editing my post and totally fecked up all my text, and now..  I've lost images????!!    /BRESERK
Thread conduct
Copy and past the images shown below into MS Paint or Paint.NET, GIMP, Photoshop, or any image editing program you wish to use, and colour them in, and shade them, to make guns of you own.  You can shade/colour them however you like.  It's not a contest.  Don't steal other peoples creations for use in a mod of your own, that's cheating ;]  I will upload them at the bottom of the post as they are completed.  You can SLIGHTLY modify/change the outline to your liking, and you can pretty much do whatever you want to any lines that are in the centre of the gun.  This thread can be used for all discussion of your created weapons, and for techinques, ideas, and all stuff related to weapon skins.  (Please keep mod dicsussion to a minimum)  Hope you learn and compete fairly.  Remember you can add your own outlines to the list if you want.

I'll give a try

I have to agree... you need to provide better outlines for your weapons (but the spas-23 was good).
Title: Re: Shade the outline! 2
Post by: Mangled* on May 02, 2008, 02:22:28 pm
They are too small... if we're all going to be comparing eachothers they need to be bigger so that we can actually put detail into them otherwise they'll end up all looking similar.

The pistol is fine... but the ones below it are tiny!

Date Posted: May 02, 2008, 03:04:21 pm
I did the pistol... made kind of a colt1911 styled pistol from it.

okay nice job Mangled!.  I will try make some more bigger ones ;)  smaller ones I still think will be welcome amongst newcommers to modding.

If you would like to have a go at the Spas again, here is a slightly improved version:

If you arent happy guys.. just post an outline of your own ;)

Okay, here's the latest. I like the guns the way they are. I don't feel like messing with them anymore... Since some of you like my Gostek and my outlines, how about... if anybody out there wants to use them, shade the guns, and make your own mod with my weapon outlines, go ahead. I give permission to anybody.

You heard the man. Round 2 starts now. We've got an entire weapon set, we could practically make a whole mod of this.

Okay, here are Magus's outlines.  I like them quite a lot thanks man!

Remember.. Add anything you want to the gun (scope, magazine etc) Please make only fairly small changes only.  Modify whatever you want inside the gun outline (like black patches) And enjoy!

But... Magus, can you pls do one at a time in the future, maybe put more detail into a single one because the outcome will be much better and I won't have to upload so many images!!  :(    It's better to have one fully texturized gun than 10 single colour ones :)

And for that reason (and because I just don't have time) I'm not gonna put ALL of them in the first post just the ones that are worth-it.  sorry

I figured since I shaded them all last night, I'd upload them all at once. And uh... what's wrong with the GL-06 and RPD?

And honestly, I don't see what else I can do to make the guns look better. When I look at most interface pictures, they look like randomly placed pixels of a similar color. There seems to be no reason behind it. Now I could do that, but then I'd have to get rid of the details I added.

If you notice, they all look so much more detailed. More colour and more detail.

I removed a couple of the weapons because they were taking up a lot of room, I removed the GL-06 because I did not like the shape, it waas too simple, and the RPD because it was just as plain as all the others, I would've removed more because the shading was all the same but I let it go in the end because I couldn't be bothered.  Please understand that I don't want them all to look the same.  Besides it's your mod, and I don't really want full on Mods being presented..

DB it looks a little strange, I'll upload it anyway, but try enhancing the 3d effect a little next time ;)   (Simple, darker shades at the bottom, yours are very hard to spot)

It's called dithering (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dither#Digital_photography_and_image_processing).

Well, I think the dithering makes them look like crappy jpegs.

It only makes sense to me that they'd be shaded the same way. Did you want like the AK to look like a picture was taken in the dark, and then the AKSU to look like it was lit by the sun from 2 feet away? looking for different light angles, what? And why does it really matter?

Also, while you might not want an entire mod, you did say you wanted the guns to be shaded, so I took a stab at shading them.

As far as the shape of my GL-06 is concerned, here's a pic of the original... http://www.world.guns.ru/grenade/gl06-1.jpg

What exactly have I missed??

It has... a UMP stock, a pistol grip, a long tube, and a vertical foregrip.

Your GL-06 had a very simple design I think you could've done better.   And it only has like 3 shades...
Title: Re: Shade the outline! 2
Post by: Magus86 on May 10, 2008, 09:42:29 pm
But they all only have 3 or 4 shades... And they're pretty small pictures anyway, especially the GL-06. Plus, the real gun's design is very simple... What, did you want me to put optical crap on it or something?

Well I'm sorry if it offends you in any way I'm still not gonna change my image, it's good and done.  What are you trying to prove by arguing me anyway?  What does it really matter to you?

I'm not trying to change your mind, I'm just trying to understand exactly what you think is wrong with it because I'm not seeing anything wrong with it.

Sorry.  I can understand your curiosity now.  I told you: All the weapons looked a lot similar in terms of shading so I diddn't bother with them all.

I'd prefer you just put it this way:  What's done is done that's life.

Now if you don't mind I'd like to stay on topic :)

Single pixel-width barrels are kind of a no-no. You want at least 2 pixels, [usually 3] so that the weapon shows up well in both light and dark maps.
Title: Re: Shade the outline! 2
Post by: Lord Frunkamunch on May 11, 2008, 02:50:22 pm
Well, I think the dithering makes them look like crappy jpegs.

It's also sometimes an attempt at making a texture (switching up the light and dark colors so that the surface won't appear completely flat) Light isn't going to hit the entire gun at the exact same angle, it will be blocked by ruts in the gun.

First of all, you don't have to do this if you DON'T WANT TO.  If you cant take it that I don't like your weapon and/or I don't want to upload it, you have every right to feck off.

Second, It still doesn't look much different I will not upload it.

Finally, i already have that other outline you posted, and I'm not uploading it because you haven't made a real effort.

You have a lot of potential in my opinion, try bring it out.
Title: Re: Shade the outline! 2
Post by: Magus86 on May 14, 2008, 02:21:13 am
I know I don't have to do this, but in an effort to possibly learn something, I thought I'd try making some more weapons... perhaps if you were more specific instead of saying "i don't like your middle." Why not? What's wrong with my foregrip and magazine? If you don't like what I've done, what SHOULD I do? If all I'm told is that I'm doing something wrong but not what it is, how the hell am I gonna figure out how to change? Whatever you say, if anything, don't say dithering because that makes them look worse.
Title: Re: Shade the outline! 2
Post by: Hair|Trigger on May 14, 2008, 02:26:01 am
Alright.  Look up a pic of an M4.  Put the details of the pic inside your gun.  I'm not telling what they are because you have to do it.  It takes a while to get some small things right, so only put essentials.  There is a rule I follow with my modding,  If you can't put in a small detail, just make the rest of the weapon "feel" like it's got that detail.  Go play  around with your guns a bit.

Btw mang, you have a silver and gold version, how do you convert the silver into gold?  Is there a feature like that in photoshop or what?
Title: Re: Shade the outline! 2
Post by: Espadon on May 15, 2008, 02:33:02 pm
Newer Photoshop versions will actually saturate monochrome. Or you can use overlay and paint over with yellow to saturate. Or the easier way is to start with a golden deagle and desaturate to make silver.

I don't see why you'd use PS for doing soldat guns.  I've tried: MS Paint, Paint.NET, and Photoshop, and I have to say Paint.NET is far better than the others in terms of making gun interfaces for soldat.  It's got easy acces to any shade of any colour of any level of transperancy all in the same toolbox.  Photoshop is more of a full-on graphics/photo editing thing.  Hence the name Photoshop.  MS Paint is good for making quick outlines (not with shading) saving screenshots, most of your copy'n'past needs, and definately for converting images.

I don't like that magazine in M16's and AKs
USP is quite good

But i think that the topic is about post the outline and let someone make it, not making full weapons

Actually it's about shading outlines already made. But since I have more than just an outline due to the fact that most of these have been/are being used in mods, I figured I'd post the full version. Then you get an outline, and my completed work... by the way, what's wrong with my magazines? I'm not offended by the fact that you don't like them; I just want to know what you think is wrong with them. shape? color? details? what?

The wrong thing on your magazines is the shape, try to take more images for bases

Soon i'll post some outline

Guys, no.   If you would like to use an outline you have to show it to me first, then if I accept it you may then shade it.

Magus, stop posting all the weapons you make please, they are out of YOUR mod, not MY thread.  I will make more outlines myself if I have to.

Well yeah, I was more trying to say this isn't a dumping ground to show off your guns but yeah that works too :)

Guys you can still post completed weapons if you want.  Still you should keep it clean :P

oh and ignore the thing I wrote in the first post I diddnt think anyone would see it xD xD

And, at any time, feel free to post your own outline for others to try!
I planned use this in NN but probably include later in some Hitman mod. Cant be smaller due to details and shape to be closest as possible in original, but in this topic size is not that important.

Another reason of size is that I extremely dislike 1-2 black pixels parts and use them only as ultimate when cant be avoid...

If custom/hellish/strange/futuristic weapons are allowed too, second outline is attached, feel free to find best looking color scheme.

Not necessarily. I'm very much a fan of your 'lack of internal outline' approach since it's how I do it too. Oftentimes 'internal outlines' are extraneous and discourage use of tonal values to create detail [instead enforcing a reliance on outlines alone] which is a problem too often seen in pixel art here.

Pay attention that is old weapon and not my actual way to do outlines and details, just old model example.

Today I using mixed techniques as something closer to texture because darker-lighter limited number of similiar pixels of color not always should work as intended to be. Internal "skeletal" outline isnt perfect also, because sometimes fakes and deform, oversize weapons, but I show my new style in next mod (not update, something new), now I just using temporary portions of "old" to slowly convert old stuff and get old ideas in new way - but not  waste basics and knowledge.

Probably from my old style ~70% is modified in modern way, learning pixelart from scratch is useless in my situation, I cant just show everyone suddenly new style when old still not died, it takes some time.

Exactly, HK. Occasionally panels and internal outlines start competing for space... It works sometimes on big slabsided guns, but generally you can't afford it with smaller weapons.

New outline, something between Alpha Doom's Machinegun and MP-40.

Also some "experiment" with shading, the legend:
O - outline
T - plain, but not completely flat texture with 3 different materials (various scheme of concavities.
S - shading added to texture (with all original scheme of materials)
F - finished, outlined weapon.
Title: Re: Shade the outline! 2
Post by: Espadon on June 09, 2008, 02:22:44 pm
Your T-stage was the best in my opinion. The "shading" overlay you did ruined it because it's just a darker gradient. T could have just been placed into the outline and perhaps contrast-adjusted to be a bit more vivid and that would have been fine.

Nope, no gradient tool in MS Paint :D i used a pallete that i found on my images folder, i just used the line tool, does it looks that bad?
EDIT: Is It just me or the image now looks with no shading?
Title: Re: Shade the outline! 2

Well, adding so much gradient is bad, make it with lights and shadows and take base pics
also work on the details
Title: Re: Shade the outline! 2
Post by: felipegoes on June 21, 2008, 05:09:03 pm
How Lights and Shadows?
BTW: i use base pics, details, eh? like a visiblem bolt or visible sights? Lights and shadows, like the bottow of the weapon darkened and the top brightened?
Title: Re: Shade the outline! 2
Post by: Hair|Trigger on June 21, 2008, 07:03:47 pm
Well I will add that one when its imporved a bit.  felip

Thanks sky.  I dont want too many similar weapons so Ill just add your M16..  (lol theyre both the same image file so thats okay) And the 'UMP' looks real nice :P  thanx for fixing it a little.

felipegoes, you should add like a bolt to it, maybe add a camo net, anything to make it look a little more 'Complicated'.

If I were you I would move the bright bit on the buttstock down a bit, then shaping it to the shape of the stock, so it doesnt look like a pipe cut out or something.  Then add some basic texture to it, like little bits of dirt and stuff but not too noticeable.  Dont limit yourself to a couple of colours from your pallete, I usually use different variants of shades, and sometimes I just draw on it randomly with a pencil just to make it look alright.  Try Gimp or Paint.NET if you want to take it to the next level :)

Frankly, no, it doesn't compete right now. Just keep working on it and try to develop your own style. We don't need a bunch of subpar SE copies.

It means you're weak that you have to rely on a ruleset that someone else put down. There's nothing technically wrong with copying, but copycats always are a step behind the creators, and you aren't going to stand out if you're a step behind. Just my opinion.
