Hey everyone,
Welcome to SoldatForums version 2.0. This means:
- New Theme
- Based on SMF 2.0
- Lots of bugfixes
- Lots of new features
- New active topics page that behaves a bit differently (better)
- Frontpage like the old old forums
- We got the old domain back, though we're still going to try and migrate off of it
- Much, much more!
ElephantHunter and I have been working on this for the past few weeks, the vast majority of credit goes to him.
Please look around, enjoy, and report any problems you encounter!
-
OSNAP I'm loving this 'portal thing!'
Very nice!
-
Flies is being a bit modest. He was instrumental in setting the forum up so quickly. Hope everyone enjoys our new forum and reports bugs (in the appropriate section :P)
-
love it, really awesome, thumbs up. :D
-
Loving the new sleek template <3
-
That's nice! Thank you very much!
And congratulations on retaking the old domain!
We can enter forums via either domain now, it doesn't matter?
PS Do I remember correctly that in previous forums shortcuts to upper-leves boards (for example, when I am here, these shortcuts look like this:
(http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/1174/przyciskidi7.png) (http://imageshack.us))
Were not only on the top of the page, but also at the bottom? I miss it a little... Or is something wrong with my memory?
[edit] Well, this "jumping" menu at the bottom can replace oit perhaps...[/edit]
-
No, only page numbers did that. I think...
gj FLAB and EH! :D
-
Very nice really :)
-
Oh my god... This looks worse than
php 3 php nuke. Change it back!!!!!!!
-
Wow. Nice new fresh breeze, I'd say!
-
What the hell have you done to SF?! ;D
Now it looks like 'portal'. It'd be nice to see 'static' sections like download etc.
I like it ;).

That's what the Soldat homepage is for (downloads, etc) as well as community sites

I though about something like 'download section' with topics that have only one post with image and link, for good mods and maps :).
-
Wow, its very different with the new homepage. I almost feel there needs to be a bit more emphasis on the link to the main "Forum" page for people new to it, at least for a little while for people to adjust.
Great work anyway, it's good to hear you got the old domain name too.
-
Ah wikked! Nice work both! Love it!
-
Loving it! Makes it look much more slick and...generally better :) I'd need to change my avatar when I get back home from college, since the colour gradient doesn't blend in like it used too.
And glad we got the old domain back. Though not sure why we'd want to "migrate off of it".
I do have a request though; I'd like the "Moderation Centre" to be renamed the "Inquisitorial Chamber of Ecclesiarchal Judgement". Thanks. :P

heheh ;)
-
Did remind me of those old forums... It'll take some getting used to, but hot diggety, does it ever look nice. Well done.
-

Hahaha, nice! I wasn't serious but I'd sure like to keep it anyway. :D And nice sub-description too. :) Heretics shalt be purged, and thy forum cleansed.
I think I play Dawn of War: Deamon Hunters (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wibYizHjCgs) a bit too much. ;^^
-
O_O
It looks like the old one. Me likes! ;D
-
Cool it kinda reminds me of the old forums :D
But wait guys!!!
forums.soldat.pl and forums.soldat.pl both works...
witch should we use???

Hmm... I'd have to say forums.soldat.pl
-
But wait guys!!!

Did you mean "forums.soldat.pl and soldatfoums.com both works..."?
I asked about it
We can enter forums via either domain now, it doesn't matter?
but no one answered. Nevertheless, since our admins are clever, I hope that address used doesn't matter.
-
It does. soldatforums .com will now only serve as a redirect as it's most basic function, while the forum will actually run off the forums.soldat.pl address, which is the one you should use.
-
K, so I changed my bookmark to forums.soldat.pl, that's correct?
-
\o/ nice
-
Damnnnn... I went on SF this morning and seriously said "What.. the hell?" out loud. I did not expect this the least bit.
Change is always nice, imo this may be better. Sense when was this change planned?
I think I'll still type forums.soldat.pl so in the future when sf.com goes away, I'll already be used to typing the correct way :)
-
Guests can't change page without having to go back to the parent forum.
In otherwords they don't see this:
Pages: [1] 2 All
Could you amend this? I am sure I am not the only one who browses as a guest and only logs in to post.
Edit:
Guests don't see that on the forum sections either.
-
Looks are pretty nice. I got abit confused when I didn't find any pages first and that you have to log in to get them otherwise its nice
-
Nice, much sleeker than the old skin. If I may ask, who designed it?
-
Thank you for doing this nice job, for all your effort and patiens.
-
Nice, much sleeker than the old skin. If I may ask, who designed it?
ElephantHunter pretty much did all of the design work.
Oh my god... This looks worse than php 3 php nuke. Change it back!!!!!!!
What...? PHP Nuke is the ugliest most insecure thing ever imaginable.
But yeah, awesome new forum guys!
-
what about changing the stars? They look ugly compared to the new looking of teh forumz :D
-
If you kill that "Veterans" box on the main page and give the submit buttons a nicer look, then... F12 :)
I really like the new design, and I like how it looks like a portal. Good job guys!
-
Now this, purely kicks ass. I love it now.
-

Kill it yourself, just hit the minus sign to minimize it.
-
The light grey lines separating the replies look weird. Overall, I think I preferred the old one, but this certainly isn't bad.
Oh, and what's with the huge spacing at the end of short posts?
-
I was anticipating this, and I'm ecstatic that it's finally here. I hope that, as always, you can't actually tell because of the way that I type. ;P
It seems to me that there are a few very minute kinks to work out, but I'm very much enjoying this new layout. Seems to me like everything is a little more accessible with the addition of a few new buttons up by the banner and the box with the avatar right underneath that. "Moderate" button makes me feel powerful.
Thank you so much for the warning system! I really, really missed the one we had on the old forums. This makes things so much more efficient. I assume that we'll just wipe the titles of members with warnings whenever we stumble across them?
But anyway, aside from that, I think the stars need to be revamped just a tad, the username and quote from links should change color slightly instead of being underlined on hover, and the background color of the reply box should be similar to the background color of the table that it's in, rather than being white. Tiny things, in my opinion, that complete the feel.
Edit: Why not use the stars that appear under a user's avatar when they're online? I like those. Neat and tiny.
-
i like this. except for the big, big problem that...
WHEN YOU TYPE IN QUICK REPLY, IT DOES NOT AUTO-ENTER FOR YOU!!! it just runs on, and on, right out of the text box.
-
O, nice! gj!
-
Ah, it's a bit strange. I will miss the old one
-
In the game suggestions, is the F12/F11 rating gone? I don't see any stars
-
We will work on getting thread rating back.
Please put all requests and bug reports into the Forum News and Support section, not this thread.
In other news, we're back in the Internet Archive. I don't know if their default behavior is to restore from backups once robots.txt allows it or whether ElephantHunter's e-mails made a difference, but Here it is (http://web.archive.org/web/*/forums.soldat.pl)
-
This is a huge step forward, I have to say :)
-
May take some getting used to(the looks, all so dull and plain) but it's a nice upgrade.
-
I was stunned when I first saw the new forums style, but It's really nice. Also, I hope that suprising forums address change was a lesson that won't have to be repeated.
-
reminds me allot of the old forums verry nice (old forum back!) good work!
-
Messed all my signature formatting. Thanks.
Also, it's a bit hard to notice at a glance which forums have new posts. Can we go back to the old color/monochrome system?
-
No changes will be made to little things right away. We're going to wait a while and see how people adapt to the changes before we make changes just for the sake of undoing stuff, so keep the "but change is bad!" reactions to yourself ;)
-
we make changes just for the sake of undoing stuff
Wait, does that mean you're going to revert to the old BBcode then? Reformatting my sig was a pain the the ass but the new way is a lot better I think.
-
Uh, I said we're not going to make changes for the sake of undoing stuff. We're not going to the old BBCode.
Nothing in the BBCode actually should be different. If your sig stopped working, odds are you did something wrong the first time that just happened to work properly.
-
Seems on my sig it doesn't require me to add ending tags when formatting text. In the old sig I did like [size=9pt]text[/size]
however in the current one it seems to autocomplete the tag at the next space or something? I had to type [/s]
[size=9pt]text [size=9pt]text2
Or is it that the new forum is more strict on how you nest formatting code?
-
Astounding, something changed. It will take me a few days to get used to, but I like it quite a bit.

After talking to Kazuki, I'm not sure if this is how it is supposed to be or if this is just a bug in this version of SMF. We are on a beta version of SMF. I will look around and try to figure out what the deal is.
For that matter, if anyone wants to look around http://simplemachines.org and see if there's any information on this, by all means please do.
-
the new forum is nice but it will be a really pain in the ass to get used to it.
-
Just for raising admin's spirits' sake: for me getting used to it is no problem, I've already did that.
-
I was correct in what I first said: there was no change in the BBCode, it just more strictly requires proper BBCode now.
-
Much, much better. Nice work, guys.
-
Very, very, very sexy :D
Gj FLAB and whoever else did this :O
-
Hell yeah!
Flies you really made this forum look spiffy.
-
This is a very refreshing change, and i don't mind it one bit.
Kudos for Flies!
-
Mmmm nice. A good surprise TY.
can we have another surprise can we can we pleaase please
-
:o thought the little "new" icons were gone, only to realize I wasn't logged in... I was going to say that I'd be so lost without them.
Yea, nice new look. Not bad. Yes, it will take a bit to get used to it, but I'll manage.
Now my siggy is all screwed up. Fixin' time.
-
Blacksheep, that just means you didn't do it right when you made it, read this page: http://forums.soldat.pl/index.php?action=help;page=post#bbcref
-
Nah, I believe I originally did it just fine, maybe originally with a few too many [/url]'s in there. Didn't show up before, but it is a simple fix. Thanks anyway
-
If your simple fix was to remove the tags that were showing up, then you did it wrong the first time. You need to order your tags in a specific order, for example bold tags must be inside color tags.
-
Yessir, tis true. I find these things out by trial-and-error. Usually works, but I do hit a few bumps here and there. Now it's font-size fixin' time. This is rather offtopic, so I'll stop yammering here.
Thanks again.
edit:
Some question I asked, then deleted
Yep, answered my own question.
-
I don't like this one... it looks like a color blind did it :o.
-

A team tested the UI and gave suggestions that lead to what you see here. I created both the old theme and the new theme with a relatively limited color set. The lack of color is to prevent distraction from the important stuff (e.g. posts)
-
I think this new layout it quite alright. It's different, that's for sure, ad at first I felt like it wasn't really soldatforumish. But I'll get used to it, and I'm ure it's much more practical. Well done.
-
it's well done, but it's too color plain for my taste. all colors are more gray than before.
-
Offline text looks ugly, make it 1pt bigger, please.
And yeah, new stars... but they are not that good, i expected something else.
-
Woah. Really like it.
Edit:
I think SimplePortal is unnecessary.
-
It is fecking awesome!
-
This is so much better. Thanks and thumbs up!
-
Cool, polish community forums have been just upgraded from mercury board to SMF 1.X and here is 2.0. Just great.
-
Online/Offline text is a bit small, pt7 should be fine. The color scheme choice is quite good actually and I find the new stars refreshing. Now all we need are new communication icons below the avatars since they look a bit rough.
-
Serves the same purpose but nice.
Good to see you're still alive Espa. :-\
-
Is anyone else getting frequent broken images? for me there's usually a broken avatar or two every time I load the page, and some images don't load at all (Particularly .gifs)
-

so far I haven't seen anything like this.
-
This is much sexier, and the areas where you post are white! This is a lot better!
-

What browser are you using?
-
I like it. Nice work, FliesLikeABrick.
-
Nice job, I like it too. Thanks for the hard work on there.
However, each time we move/change forums, the colours and layout look brighter. Not so easy on the eye if you ask me.
Oh well, call me picky.

You're right, we have progressively been using a brighter color set. I went with the brighter color set because it lightens the mood of the forum and makes it look more professional. You'll also notice that the color scheme is similar. I didn't want to alienate old users.
The white "quick reply" box at the bottom may be a bit bright. I'll consider muting the color of this box if there is enough support.
-
whoa...this new version ROCKS!!!!!
-
I see you also got the old domain back. Someone fill me in on how that happened!
-
its damn awesome!!
Ty very much FLAB and all others who worked on our 4\/\/3$0|\/|3 website
-
is it just me or has the forums been down from time to time lately? are you updating?
-

I've experienced this also.

This is not intentional downtime, something weird has been going on that causes the webserver to crash pretty badly once every day or two. As of right now I am working on trying to figure out how to track it down.
If anyone notices that the forums or any other site I host is down, please e-mail me ASAP at ryan@u13.net since I may not notice immediately.
If anyone is very familiar with Apache, feel free to come to #soldat.devs and get my attention so that I can brainstorm with you.

The new Forum board browsing buttons and overall the category selection height is too big, since it takes too much time to scroll down to the bottom of the Forums. The size of the Board title and description area should be ~15% smaller. Apart from that, the previous darker Teal colour scheme seemed more appealing. Nevertheless this is was not a wasted effort.
