Title: Espadon's shading tutorial is a wonderful thing, but:
Post by: AquaByrd on December 29, 2008, 02:46:45 pm
What do I do if I want to shade a flat surface; i.e. the side of a revolver where the revolving 'magazine' is housed (Not the actual revolving 'magazine')?

That should give you a rough idea.

Flat surface:

Notice that it is not a solid block of colour, its small variations in shade that give it a texture.

Now do that in pixels.

Espadon very nice. I have to admin you were really usefull...

...sadly Mangled that was kind of weird task. You could give him a picture of a wall which he could see anywhere at home and tell him that it's flat but it got a texture , make it. No offence ofcourse.

To be honest. Tutorials ain't really good because they won't really help you make your own style, but if you really want Google is your friend as well. There are plenty of this things. Or just zoom somebodys work. Easy as that.

Get on MSN Dairy. Anyways, now you come to mention it, I'll go zoom in on Field Marshal's Enfield's in his WWII mod.

Oops.

Well the last thing you really need is a strong dithered texture; to make the difference between the drum and the flat side, you want some contrast. In general, the difference between flat and round is where the shading bevels occur. With cylinders the whole thing changes as you go; with flat things the edges are where most of the shading occurs.

And yeah, looking at others' work would be a good idea.
