Title: APNG support in soldat?
Post by: Serial K!ller on January 02, 2009, 07:48:32 am
.gif support has been promissed but it's and old format and has some disadvantages like the 256 colours limit and no alpha-transparency.

There is a format: apng (http://animatedpng.com/) that doesn't have these 2 problems so it would be great if next to .gif's soldat could use these to a:

Needs firefox 3 or opera 9.5 to view properly:

With gif's the edges would be ugly

Yeah, it would be great. Is the little ball meant to move so insanely fast on second .apng? (I'm using Opera 9)

apng would be awesome really as the files first frame can be viewed by a normal png viewer meaning there isn't any need for changes to polyworks to add apng to a map.

Q: While it's totally awesome, wouldn't it open mapping up to even more bloat abuse? I mean, I expect people will make rather bloaty images just for the sake of eye candy...

Well we have already .gif support the bad thing about it is that its really hard to make smooth animations especially for things like smoke where you really need the 8bit transparency that you have in png. And you can already do eyecandy except that its not as living ans when you have animations. And a map has to be playable for ppl to really play it as ppl won't play a map just for eye candy...

A square-ish square with animated flow. Just to see how powerful is APNG.

Whats wrong with you, good graphics don't lie in animation, it's shadows/highlights/reflections/raycasting/dynamic lighting and all that shit that constitute good graphics.

Animations distract from the point of the game, and if they aren't done right, will ruin the whole thing looking like a nun at a rock concert.

Yeah I agree. I like Soldat as it is.
I think better graphic will make it loose his charm, specially animations.

Well 1.5 will already have animations as in animated gif scenery however apng as a format is much better then gif.

if it will be less laggy than .gif then f12 otherwise f11
Title: Re: APNG support in soldat?
Post by: ~Niko~ on January 06, 2009, 06:24:32 am
It will be more laggy since PNG images can support alpha channel, so they might be used for cloud effects or so...

All the advantages of animated sceneries have been discussed in other threads.
GIFs are better than nothing, but APNG will help you go past limits that GIF has.
For those worried about map size - im sure that good mappers will consider that. Otherwise mapper's most likely a noob and the map isn't worth downloading. If you're worried about fps - dont forget that you can turn off animations completely. Animated sceneries don't create internet lag.

It would also be cool if you where able to control an image so you can make it move/stretch/transparent/rotate (using DirectX functions) so it's more resource friendly for some animations but I guess that would take more work to implement.

f.e.
- a light that fades in, stays on and then fades out to create a broken TL lamp.
- Moving one or more images to create special effects like clouds or fire instead of a big GIF or APNG.
- A moving vehicle (f.e. a Jetplane),  with APNG or GIF you would need an image as wide as the map and a lot of frames to make it look good/smooth but that would be very inefficient and would most likely create lag.

Made new topic for this : http://forums.soldat.pl/index.php?topic=32061.0

Exactly. That's how we should look at such ideas.

it would be really great if you could use it right like just for miner details like a flickering flame on a torch or a flickering light or other lil things like that

Their is no reason it should lag a significant amount more than gifs, plus as far as I know there will be an option of animation anyways so if you have a slow computer it can be disabled. I f12 it, soldat's community needs some more eyecandy to keep alive when link-dead and berserker come out.

Imagine the water, clouds, and surroundings we could make
(http://i42.tinypic.com/3133hvk.jpg)(http://i41.tinypic.com/2ch7w7.png)
It's not possible to make this kind of shading without .apng is it?

Will it depend on Video card or soldat engine lagwise? And not until 1.5.2 will I want to see any additions, it'll shut the n00bs up.

Just look at my avvy:

I'd use it if its size would be less than 50kb, but it's 5 times bigger.

Paint.NET... then using the apng assembler  (http://animatedpng.com/index.php/assembler/)and it makes the animation.

Besides APNG, I would want the normal gifs to work in full effect as well. Meaning for instance, no randomly coloured backgrounds, no disappearing frames or some other weird shit.
