Title: Certain keys sometimes stop working
Post by: Geomancer on May 20, 2010, 06:26:34 pm
I've had this happen several times now, and have no idea what causes it or how to work around it:

In the middle of a Soldat game, certain keys will stop working. Often it happens (or I notice it has happened) when I'm typing in the chat line. Specifically, I can't delete from the chat line (i.e. what backspace does), and I can't send the line I've typed (i.e. what enter does). Additionally, when I haven't brought up "Say:" or "/Cmd:", I cannot bring up the in-game menu, and thus it is impossible for me to exit Soldat except by hitting ctrl-alt-delete and killing the process. Also pressing some keys cause Windows (win7, 64-bit) to bleep at me.

Is this a known issue? How can I avoid having this happen again?

More information needed:
-OS
-any programs running in the background
-tried to install Soldat again?
-tried using other keys?
-did you try whether you got the same problem with Notepad? (keys broken?)

OS:
Windows 7, 64-bit version

Programs running in background:

Tried to install Soldat again:
I have now, but because the problem occurred sporadically, I don't yet know if it has been fixed.

Tried using other keys:
I'm not sure what you mean.

Keys broken:
Definitely not. All of those keys work fine under normal circumstances.

This is just a theory, but... since pressing certain keys caused Windows to bleep at me (i.e. the same bleeping sound which Windows makes when you press a key that doesn't work in the current context), maybe it has something to do with keyboard focus?

Are you pressing more than 3 or 4 keys at the same time when it happens?

I'm not sure what exactly you mean, but...

If you mean when it bleeps at me, then no. If you mean when it starts acting unresponsive... Then I don't know.

I get the same bug with bleeping sound and unresponsive keys. (Happens once every few hours)

I noticed frame-rate drops when it bleeps. In case that helps.

Keys that become unresponsive are keys like ESCAPE, ENTER, ...

Question for the other people with this issue: do you play full-screen, or windowed?

A bit of a necro, but does anyone still get this bug? I want to know if the mantis ticket (http://bugs.soldat.pl/view.php?id=24) is still relevant

Come to think of it, I haven't experienced this for quite a while. Actually I don't even remember when it used to happen for me.

Waiting for more feedback though.

I've got this sometimes. It's very rarely but only when I am minimalizing game and return to the window. I do it many times.

One thing others in this thread haven't mentioned yet is that it generally helps to clean your keyboard or buy a new one when you spill stuff in it or let it get too dirty. Can cause keys to not be pressed properly or multiple keys to press at the same time. I know the "try a new keyboard or mouse" suggestion is cliche as balls around competent tech people but it isn't always a bad idea.

All my F-buttons stop working after a few days of playing, I never minimize game. Deleting and reinstalling every week gets a bit tiresome after a while

I've never heard of that.

What's an F-button? Do you mean that your F-key stops working suddenly? Does re-assigning the action work, or assigning it to another key?

Re-installing Soldat then seems a bit overboard. We don't handle the function keys in any special way. Something on the computer must be preventing the key events from reaching Soldat. OEM-bundled crapware often include media key tools, drivers and whatnot. Us developers don't tend to get quirky issues like these, probably because we know how to treat our computers like the goddesses they are.

What are you talking about... I'm not saying that my keyboard is blocking keys but Soldat does it. This is bug from always and still not fixed anyway restart Soldat is enough, just client is bugged for unkown reasons.
