Title: SMF upgrade
Post by: jrgp on December 15, 2011, 11:30:51 pm
Hey,

We have been on a version of SMF from 2009 for a ridiculously long time, so I am going to upgrade the forums to the latest version of SMF at this time.

Please consult this thread for further info.

Okay, upgrade largely complete. What's left is fixing various rough edges and the portal, but the largest part is complete.

Please use this thread to point out issues and provide feedback.

edit: Portal seems done.

another edit: I'm aware the forums are still a bit rough around the edges and I'm going to be continually improving them over the next few days. again, if anyone has anything to say about the forums, please reply to this thread...

Do we really need portal ?

Nice. the unread topics link isn't with the normal tabs under the SF logo and the list isn't organized like it used to be; by sub forum. thats all. What other change will we acutely notice from this upgrade? layout and theme are mostly the same. Any chance those will change in the future?

Dammit, lay-out has changed too much! And I'm not really happy about it... Isn't there possibility to keep with older lay-out...?

Dammit, lay-out has changed too much! And I'm not really happy about it... Isn't there possibility to keep with older lay-out...?

The theming of the new version of SMF compared with the extremely outdated one has changed significantly. It isn't possible to retain the same exact theme. I had to take the default SMF theme (look here) (http://hacktalk.net/) and tweak it beyond recognition to what it is now.

I'm not anywhere near done, either. The padding/margins are off in various places and certain areas are lacking borders and backgrounds. That's essentially it, though.

FLAB has been asking me to upgrade the forums for, literally, possibly years now and I was tired of keeping him and everyone else waiting, so I went along with the theme partially unfinished.

you can't click on image for front page..

Done.

Do we really need portal ?

No one ever told me otherwise.

Nice. the unread topics link isn't with the normal tabs under the SF logo and the list isn't organized like it used to be; by sub forum. thats all.

That's something changed by SMF that doesn't really seem to be part of the theme. I'll take a stab at hard coding it in though.

What other change will we acutely notice from this upgrade? layout and theme are mostly the same. Any chance those will change in the future?

As I said above, I'll be continually tweaking the theme/layout to look more like how it did before. Ideally, the forums are faster/more secure now though.

Regardless, I think you and I did a pretty good job getting the forums to how they look now.

 - Brought the google ad back because MM's gotta eat. If you don't like it, install adblock.

Can you please clarify what you're pointing out?

(...)

the bug: Soldat Developer Log board shows as it has an unread post but it hasn't.
how to reproduce:
1. wait for a new facebook msg saying that there is a new topic on dev log
2. click on that link from facebook, now you have read the new topic
3. from the topic click on "official soldat forum" buttom, on the top of the screen
4. you'll see that Soldat Developer Log board has an unread topic, click on the board
5. there is no unread topic on the board

I only saw this once, maybe on the next update I'll try again :P

All the attachments are index.php's now, you have to download  them and choose the specicif program to use the file (Noticed this when redownloading VTT's map packer).
.PMS files may not even work. Not cool :(

I think quotes have a different background color.
I remember the old design had alternating post colors (one a bit lighter and one darker).

Yes, the quotes now are slightly different and more modern looking. And the posts here do still have the alternating background colors. That hasn't changed.

WYSIWYG editor is just some kind of joke. Seriously. What You See Is What You Never Get in this case. Manipulating with text controls can drive you insane, especially when you enabled bold/size (best both at once) and now you try to disable them. Furthermore, preview shows you a wonderland, when you post, it turns into some bloody hell.
I didn't test wysiwyg editor in the old version though so i can't tell you if it was better or not.

Oh, also font is different. And i liked old one more.

I think the padding is still off, needs more space all around each post. i.e. not enough space above and to the left of the posters name.

1) The wysiwyg editor is exactly the same, except the buttons for the bold/italics/etc look slightly different.
2) The forum font didn't change either.
