Title: Soldat Mapping Contest: Best RL Arena
Post by: Blacksheepboy on February 13, 2012, 04:30:23 pm
RL Arenas

Entrances:
Zakath's inf_Battleship (http://forums.soldat.pl/index.php?topic=41788)
chakapoko maker's inf_Stronghold (http://forums.soldat.pl/index.php?topic=41735.0)

Summary
In this mapping competition, the goal is to design the best semi-real-life interior/exterior mapping arena. Ideas are such as airports, hotels, houses, parking lots, hospitals, warehouse, office building (the two towers), etc. Whoever designs the best well-rounded arena will win a prize. There'll be a second and third position included.

Examples would not include standard/default style maps (default style scenery could be used though).

For inspiration, consider CS maps; even Avarax' cs/de maps. Google even 'office buildings' or city byways, sewers, and so on; I've named enough examples already :-X

Ranking (the judges will judge by):
1-4 Aesthetics: How does it look; contributing to gameplay
1-4 Playability: How smooth is it, cover, paths, experimentally creative (how accurately applicable/well done to specific gamemode)
1-4 Uniqueness: How does it compare to the 'other guys''
Extra--
Botting (wpts): Does it have wtps, how well done
(if you can't completely waypoint your map, I'll volunteer)

Prizes:
First place; Steam game of your choice under $20/paypal
(Thanks to chutem)
Second place; '' '' $10
Third place; to be discussed

Deadline:
April 1st

Judges:
1. As de Espada
2. Suowarrior
3. Blacksheepboy (?)

Contestants:

We'll get some clarification and examples up included

We'll see how this goes, or no-goes!

Q & A
Which gamemode should I map in?
Currently, any gamemode

Do I have to have a steam account?
Yes, probably, unless serious enough to do Paypal

What if I can't map?
As long as you provide something of, or nearing, complete (completion) quality, no one else might claim 2nd/3nd position (prize)

'Application' requirements?
Polygon layout, appropriate shading, spawns, grenade/medkits, flags etc., mild (at least) amount of scenery

Why 'real life'?
Because it is sometimes the most painful to map because of scenery-wise; but it can have great payoffs in the end; as in, if I mapped the airport map in my head right now . . .

I am semi-working on an airport to coincide, as an example, with this competition.

Alpha flag in plane, Bravo flag in parking garage.

I am willing to donate prizes, up to USD $20 in steam games, paypal.

The hard part is mapping for it ^.^

I'm willing to work with/help any mappers willing to try this contest out, such as waypointing/scanning web for scenery (what seems to be the tough part [of 'RL'ish maps])

Is stronghold applied to this contest? I mean medieval one.

anything that exists or could exist in reallife, so I dont see why a stronghold wouldnt be possible.

I thought that reallife must be in the present day. Okay I stand as a candidate.

just do it with a present touch like an old castle that is now an museum or something.

I intend to make it scary because it will be a zombie map that has an old hold with gargoyle. If it's out I do witout candidacy. :(

Okay, I've been sort of away for the last two days. I updated the first post with the two submissions, so I guess now it goes to testing. If I could get a server running..

I played through them both, and wrote up a 'rough draft' scoring of each of them. Maybe if someone with server capacity could host, or we could use single player to judge gameplay (since both maps have alpha waypoints)

I uploaded them both to #soldat.mapping, we can test it there

Does #soldat.mapping work sort of like a gather? Thank you by the way

yes
Title: 1st 'Scoring'
Post by: Blacksheepboy on April 12, 2012, 01:43:22 pm
Seems gather bot works again

Okay I have a server up running both of the maps, along with 16 Boogie Man's. It's a 4 slot server. Forgot that Mr. Domino's zombie server was a 6 slot, but oh well

!SFM Host Services
173.254.253.58:23077

We might be a little late judging maps. Server switched to modded, but switching it back. I have my unofficial scores for each map, but prefer to wait with testing.

Testing on my own. My critiques so far:

Quote
inf_Stronghold

Base gameplay 1
Cliffs, hiding point, layers, etc. 1
Jets .75
Deadpoints .25
Gameplay:   3

Gargoyles .5
Shading, texture stretching 1.25
Scenery 1
Aesthetics:   2.75

Gargoyles .5
Stronghold .5
Intro 1
Dead points .25
Zombie holes .25
Uniqueness:   2.5

Score:      8.25

Improve?: Appreciated zombie 'holes', liked stronghold. Polygon structure works. Semi-different path at top stronghold (gargoyles) +1. Path to stronghold +1.

inf_Battleship

Base gameplay .75
Stat. guns .25
Layers 1
'Backwards' INF .25
Gameplay:   2.5

Animated scenery 1
Shading, shapes, etc. 1
Helicopters, fitting scenery 1
Aesthetics:   3

Intro section (pre-indoors) 1
Aesthetics 1 (missiles, animated scenery, shading)
'Backwards' INF .25
Theme/feel .5
Uniqueness:   2.75

Score:      8

Improve?: More unique beginning rooms (think Space Station Zombie), maybe doors you could shoot through; maybe removal of bullet-collide shipping containers. Appreciated missile-stat. gun area/crate layers. Waypoints (?) jam horde of zombies at white flag/beginning bullet-colide boxes sometimes. Maybe have deathpoint at end (for players/zombies to kill themselves on); maybe on-fire floor at flag, cycling zombies.

Summary: inf_Stronghold outweighed by a unique theme/style, animated scenery; inf_Battleship outweighed by gameplay, base feel/layout, deadpoints.

Hard to kill them otherwise [shrug]. We found both maps hard, though we capped Stronghold once
