Title: Default player interface
Post by: Viral on October 12, 2014, 07:31:58 am
Seeing how Soldat is going to be improved i was wondering if the default interface is going to be changed aswell as the rrest of the GUI. I think that Cabbage interface looks way better than the current default one and it would suit the new wapons gfx better. I think Black-Border is aslo a good alternative - what do you think?

In case you dont know, Black-Border: http://forums.soldat.pl/index.php?topic=36046.0 (http://forums.soldat.pl/index.php?topic=36046.0)

They should replace or tweak all the interfaces.

One of my suggestions: http://forums.soldat.pl/index.php?topic=34241.0

I would like Dusty to make the new interface. He is good at making interfaces look minimalist and polished.
If he could adapt this style to the default interface, it should turn out great.

Before interfaces are remade, I think the interface engine needs to be reworked first. AFAIK you can't properly anchor the elements to specific parts of the screen, so they don't scale properly with different resolutions. Also some elements share position coordinates with a different element, which somewhat limits placement options and, again, causes problems on different resolutions.

Absolutely. It's way too limited for making anything genuinely nice.

Only straight coloured lines, I lack the creative and graphical talent required.

Interface engine is super crappy. None of the bugs are in mantis yet, but I do have a little list. Keep in mind that fixing the engine would ruin most current interfaces

I don't think it's worth fixing because of how limited it is. Of course I don't know if fixing and adding new features is easier than just redoing, but just fixing bugs doesn't seem like a big improvement to me.
As for the old interfaces, I don't think it would be a huge loss when you could make new ones that are a hundred times nicer.

Here's an interface design I left unfinished about half year ago. Since Soldat is a fast paced shooter, my idea was to make a layout that minimizes the time eyes and mind takes to process things on screen. This is a layout concept that emphasizes on psychology rather than graphics, so don't get mad at the simplicity. Maybe someone can get ideas from this and improve on it.

-Centered inventory, close proximity between HP/Jet bars and remaining ammo on the center. Eyes doesn't need to travel side to side on the screen.
-Inward draining bars that further focuses the staring point to the center on crucial gameplay moments.
-Jet icon colour scheme changed to same as it's bar (something else than yellow/orange, because it would be too close the current colour of ammo values).
-Ammo bar left out, because I think numbers are more useful and having a bar next to it is just unnecessary. This also serves the centered layout in a practical way.
-Alpha levels applied to secondary/unselected weapon. (I forgot who came up with this idea originally, you know who you are though)
-Alpha levels applied to nades which indicates the max allowed amount of nades and how many you are currently having.

Really like the concept. Really do.

The layout is just great. Displaying the secondary / primary weapon is great either. It was already suggested in another thread few ?years ago though.

Default interface should use default elements layout, don't forget about unregistered users.

Make it Espada's Halo interface while you're at it.

there is definitely some better looking interfaces out there, I also prefer a smaller simple one.

kind of mix of PRO+cabbage some small tweaks, one I use:

That is incredibly small.

I really like what smiluu has suggested. Everything seems to be in the place it should be. And it's small.
CheeSeMan.'s suggested interface is way too small and it doesn't give you "instant information". It's just confusing and people not familiar with the game will need time to get used to it.

I believe Sh07gaN's (http://forums.soldat.pl/index.php?topic=36046.msg434793#msg434793) concept is by far the best option, at least from what i've seen.

Sadly, i don't. However, i checked his forum account and he seems to be roaming around here. Perhaps we send him a message?

I have it, the problem is - its all PNG and it only seems to work when you overwrite the default interface with it. We would need to change the extention to .bmp or sth. I can pack the zip.

@edit. here it is.

Not a fan of the black-border one - black borders look awfully out of place.

I've rummaged through the interfaces forum section and dug up a few others:
Tracer (http://forums.soldat.pl/index.php?topic=432.0)
Tluafed (http://forums.soldat.pl/index.php?topic=2151.0)
Masonry (http://forums.soldat.pl/index.php?topic=2483.0)
BF2 Interface (http://forums.soldat.pl/index.php?topic=4233.0) (not really)

EasySteel (http://forums.soldat.pl/index.php?topic=27814.0) - also by Sh07gan but all links and previews are dead. :/

Honestly, I could take a go at making a new interface myself, but with weapon mod and other stuff on my plate this'll have to wait until after 1.6.8. :/

L[0ne]R, check the SoldatX mod db
http://www.soldatx.com/downloads/mods

An option in the Int Maker to choose the text alignment (left and right) would help A LOT to make better interfaces.
