Title: Soldat for Linux, how far are we?
Post by: Mokkun on February 20, 2016, 06:50:07 am
Hi,

I was wondering, since Soldat 1.7 switched to OpenGL, how much work does it need to run natively on Linux based systems? I know you can already play Soldat on Linux using Wine but I think it would be neat to be able to run it without any third party programs. I also think this could bring some new people here, the gaming community on Linux isn't huge but I know a lot of people who would definely check it out.

I can run Soldat via Wine & Playonlinux without any issue and I had like 800fps. (1200 on Windows)

^ Since Soldat works fine with that tool, the priority to have a native version is a bit lower now imo. but I think Shoozza still plans to do that.

I think the gui is the problem now, linux/mac release is on the to-do list but I got no idea what priority it has but it is not vital. Little bit of insight would be nice, devs.
But as mr. darDar said, there shouldn't be any big problems running it via wine on linux or parallels on mac.

What is Linux really? I was looking into it kind of since I lost faith in Microsoft after their 7 came out, but it seems that Linux is even more about this whole "cloud based" concept, which is precisely what I'd want to avoid by boycotting Windows..?

Hi guys,

i joined dev team especially for this reason - to bring native soldat for linux and mac. Not any time soon but we are working on it.

Nice this is good news, is there a lot of work? Do you have some sort of ETA?

We don't. Every time we try to estimate something it ends up in shredding community's trust.

There are a few libraries we use which prevent us to release a linux and mac build (client side libraries, as server works fine on both linux and mac).
I cannot estimate when it will happen but it isn't a small task.
