Title: Worthy Karma Idea
Post by: Gold on October 03, 2006, 01:52:05 am
Another forum i go to reguarly (RTB Forums) uses a really good karma system, and i thought maybe Soldat Forums could try use it more like this...

- You need 15 or more karma to smite somebody, this will help stop the abuse of the smite button

- They also have a thing so that it shows who has the most karma on the front page by the active users bar

- Rewards per year for the person with most karma, RTB gave the user the choice to change his username once, and a custom message under his name

People just arent happy with the karma system, take a look.

Karma isn't some kind of popularity contest, man. Or, as One Gram put it:

This is exactly what we don't need with the karma system.  Karma should be used as a judge of posting not who you think is cool or not.

And about your first suggestion... that would really defeat the whole purpose of karma, it would change it from really being a judge of character into some kind of hippie-forum with everybody loving everybody. I guess I put that a bit strange, but I hope you get my point. Actually, smiting would probably even more frequent when you actually reached that level above 15 post.

Then if the karma system is used correctly, only people with 15+ karma should be responsible for smiting people.

Yeah, and that's my point. People that everyone hated (also those who are hated for no real reason) would get no chance at all to smite someone that they think deserved a good ol' smiting.

These suggestions would make the karma system even more of a popularity contest, though I wouldn't mind that. Right now the system is stupidly somewhere in between.

Karma IS a competition, very few would think of it as anything else.

Hmm, I like the minimum karma value requirement inorder to smite somebody; that could only improve the system. The prize is unnecessary, aswell as the "most karma" highscore list.

no, people complaining are people who think the system is being abused.

Why are you making such a big deal about this? I doubt many people take this crap seriously. I rarely notice someone's karma. I didn't even know what's mine until I just checked. Negative or positive karma, no difference. People will still keep thinking of you the way they did before. It's just a number.

I don't have as much optimism about the ability of people to ignore that number.  I already see newer members insulting older ones just because they have a low postcount, it's only natural that they'd do it to karma as well.

I don't complalin about karma; I complain about people smiting me to no end.

Why don't we just get rid of karma, it makes the people with low karma feel like crap and so far I haven't seen anyone who has really liked it. The people who don't hate it don't care. Why are you so hard-headed about it? Why do you want to keep it?

Karma is good, Fluffy; it tells who're really good members and the opposite. The only problem right now is that those who are being smited are being smited way overboard.

+10 with one applaud if you're in negative! :P

That's why karma doesn't work - people smite each other for ridiculous reasons, and sometimes without no reason at all.

*smites everyone in this thread*

See?

You can't smite everyone in the thread because there's a 24 cooldown period (mmorpg's are getting the best of me) on a smite.
And just because somone is a moderator dosen't mean they have to have positive karma, it's not like the smite button is removed from a moderators account.

Huh? What are you talking about? I just smited everyone in this thread succesfully, including you.

*tries to smite again but gets the error message thingie*

The cooldown period applies to smiting/applauding the same person more than once. You can do it to multiple users in one day.

My god! I guess you learn something every day. My appologies for my ignorance. -Vis-, frogboy, you deserve cookies (an applaud for each of you) for enlightening me.

I have close to the lowest karma, I don't give a ****, see me whining?

But for those who do care, it deserved to be changed.

† sometimes goes out of line (see 'Lets put this all behind us'-thread). I believe that's why people smite him.

Patience is one of the main capabilities a moderator has to has. Flaming people with cursewords isn't really that moderator-like.

It oviously doesn't prevent you from doing anything.  It brings more traffic to soldatforums... two extra clicks.  ;)

2. Don't talk about Karma Club.

People should need no lower than -20 karma, if they have lower than -20 karma they cant smite people because they shouldnt have the right to do so...

EDIT: you shouldnt be able to smite people more than once every 5 days... or have a limit of only being able to smite 8 - 15 differant people a week, or something related, then maybe people will actually think about who they smite.
