Title: Animated GIFs
Post by: Selknam on June 15, 2006, 07:04:49 pm
Again, i dont speak english, so be pattient.

I really like the style of soldat, the way that looks because is very simple. So this idea does not mean change that, it just mean add somethings at the game that could make it more intresting to see.
For example: The flag could be an animated gif, it could have a little move made by the wind (I dont know the word that in spanish is "Flamear", wich is the tipical move that make a flag in the wind)
Or a tree could be afeccted by an explotion near.
What if the soldiers were made on gif format. Imagine them doing the /pwn XD

May could be intresting.... the idea is not change a lot of things, most of all is add some simple things into the maps, things wich does not make any interference with the game, but that can mean a simple evolution in his graphics.

This would bring more realism to the game, but we're alright with what we've got.  Although, I do want to see .gif support.

Would it cause lag?
I don't know anything about that sort of stuff but I know I hate lag.

it could bring even less realism... an more fun
Do you remember ctf_dragonwar? What if instead of statics dragons in each base they have mouth that could open and close, or even less, just have eyes that look at you, or teeths bleedings. Gif support could be make a lot more intresting the maps, withoth altered (change) the stile of soldat or the way that it is been played.

and about the lag, it should not be a problem, becuase they are archives that are located in ours pcs, and souldnt modificated the packages between us and the server.

it wouldn't cause internet lag - the only lag can come only from your computer.  The server doesn't send the animation graphics live to the player - every player's computer does that itself...

Awesome, I'm all for the idea then.

what if interfaces were animated... how it looks if, when you take damage, the icon in the side of your health bar make a response of it... someone could make a face of a soldier that shows pain when you take damage...

things like those could be intresting, and wouldnt change the game at the way it is play now.

A gif for the flag would make it simpler. I believe you're asking for more physics. The game's objects, such as flags, players, guns, and crates, all have skeletons, which twist and turn the objects they belong to. If that skeleton system was replaced by gifs, the game would look horrible. Plus, Michal (the creator of Soldat) said that he can't get GIFs into the game, due to legal issues.

Sorry to rain on your parade dude  :-\

Its too hard to implement GIF into DirectX afaik, thats why its not there.

You can't.

Unless you were being sarcastic?

on a kind of similar not, wouldnt this make interactive scenery possible? like exploding barrels, or the trees get mutilated by bullets? maybe not...im not sure about all this

Correct, the .gifs could cause your FPS to drop if you have a piss poor computer. However, if the .gif animations were based on the server (so the animations are synchronised) they could potentially cause internet lag. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't be synchronised though, so it's no worry.

Plus, Michal (the creator of Soldat) said that he can't get GIFs into the game, due to legal issues.

This used to be true, because .gif had some sort of copyright thing. But, last I heard, it expired and the .gif format is free to use by everyone now, so Michal wouldn't have any problem legally implementing support. I may be mistaken though.

This has been brought up before, and I support it.  Mostly.  I think animated sceneries are a good idea, and seeing as how animated explosions work in game, it does seem to be in the realm of possibility.  Flags waving in the wind and stuff would be cool, especially if it reacted to elements in game, such as gun fire and explosions.

However, I don't like the idea of making soldiers into aniamted gifs.  I think the current ragdoll system is mouch more advanced, allowing for severed limbs and realistic (yeah...) physics-based deaths.  Making the animations into gifs would make the game look stiff.  It's like if CS:Source went back to the set death animations of 1.6 instead of modern ragdoll techniques.

I fear that mapmakers would overuse this but it is very good idea (old though)

I'd love to see fire :)
Title: Ability to use animated gifs as sceneries.
Post by: jrgp on June 16, 2006, 10:59:48 am
I think it would be absolutely awesome if it were possible to use animated gifs as sceneries.

So maybe a pool of lava could be animated so it would look as if the lava were flowing.

Well.... It sounds cool, but will ruin the gameplay I think.

I'd like a "animated backgrounds" checkbox in the config file right next to the "fullscreen" box

Can you imagine how many people would put generic website .gifs on their maps? No thank you.

That's just misuse of them though, nobody would force you to use or play the maps yourself.
Animated scenery could contribute a lot for making more interesting looking maps. But in the other hand overuse of them would most likely be bad.

yeah and all the good servers play with the default maps which won't have anything bad on them...

.gif for interface and sceneries

for everything else we already have animations so why redo them in a .gif?

No. When you download the .gif in the maps folder and the scenery (flags) will move and move, like 3-4frames, it wouldnt create lag, if the .gifs were on the whole map with more frames still no.

On other way, if the soldier animations were .gif then it would create lag when all in the same time /pwn or /piss...

Well, I dont think it would. Soldat, with all its pixelated goodness, wont look so pretty with a moving tree in the back. Also, the characters are too small to really see any breathing.

you could have a waving flag.
The enemy base could be a monster make with usual pollygons but at the same time have bleeding teeths, or moving eyes wich look at you. Imagine the bottom of an actual map... usually their are just blu or other similar color, imagine that de bottom were a sunshine that actually rise, or something similar, giving more and less color to a map, making it day and night.

Are you kiddin? With animated stuff going around everywhere, the server won't take it! Are you people not aware of the lag that plagues all games already?!

This is a horrible idea! You wouldn't be able to play animated maps online at all!!

I'm sure alot of 2D multiplayer games have animated gfx and still runs fine...

We could probably have a .gif limit when making maps lol.

The server wouldn't even be involved. All of the .gifs would be stored and rendered client-side. The only lag you might experience would be local to your own computer.

As such, I'm all for it.

MapName: Crazy_Forrest
Type: Deathmatch

You go throw in the tree a nade and you see that the tree "matrix style" dodges the bullet...lol, lmao! Thats possible with gif...

Code: [Select]
If nade.gif = x,y range of the tree then tree.gif play treedodge.gif

Its possible :P

I don't think so.  I'm sure MM's maps (default maps) won't have such crazily big .gif animations running in the background because THAT would ruin the gameplay.  MM is all about keeping it fun - I'm sure he'll know exactly how to deal with .gif files as to not ruin the gameplay

im totally agree that if something like this is make

it should be incorporat step by step, taken care, most of all, keeping soldat fun and dont change their style, just add some subtle (that the word???) things and see how it works.
And about the maps afraids, well i think that it shouldnt happens, cuz MM put his owns favorites maps on the game, wich came default with him, and the most part of servers use just that maps. So the maps would be in the same line than now, cuz their or judge by the same person. (and maked in the most part of the cases)

Look closely at your soldaten.

birdies flying around!
I don't want 5000x96 gif files clogging my computer.

twinkling stars!
That would look awful.

The dudes that made gifs need you to sign forms and starf for them to be usable.

My solution to all of this: Bring in the MNG files! The majority of our population doesn't know how to use MNGs, so it would be unlikely to come across a stupid MNG in a map. Plus, they have an alpha layer *hint* flickering SK lights.
