What do you like in a climbing map?
« on: January 13, 2007, 12:36:58 am »
So, I'm making a climbing map, have a small beginning made, and I want to know what kind of map you guys like? Big? Small? Jets? Hard? Easy?

I don't like a really big and hard climbing map, you just end up frustrated. Maps that are in the middle or a bit short seemed popular, see ctf_techclimb, ctf_athletics*, ctf_aujv3fix, ctf_fake* and such.

Usually it's better to make the map too easy than too hard if your wanting for it to be played on.
Good example is that map that Untitled made, it was really, really long and challenging, if I recall correctly it took the ones who made it several hours to do so.

The map should have variation (unlike ie ctf_junq) and maybe show some new trick(s) you came up with. Alternate routes are usually good too.
Whatever you do don't let different teams come in contact with each other, it always ends up with fist fights.

Also I like to see that the creator has made some effort to make the map look not crap, but visuals aren't that important.

Bottom line: Make something that isn't just a mixture of old things, that isn't too easy, and that doesn't look crap and I might play it. ;)

Yes, as CarlHamilton has said, the map should be rather to easy than to difficult, because it's more fun. Also try to make a map without any deadly polygons, maybe something like ctf_tower (or something like that) but that you don't loose and have to climb from the beginning when you make a mistake, maybe something like levels that you only can fall on but not deeper, something like a SAVE option (:P).

Bottom line2: Make a map that satisfies with the feeling of success!
Hmm, any idea what to write here?

I prefer a climb map that's not hard, nor easy. I like something that is medium difficulty. No jets either. Jets ruin it sometimes. Also, not something that would take 30 minutes to complete, something like 10 minutes at maximum.

This, really. While you can use Bravo/Charlie/Delta spawn points as checkpoints, I think that encourages "cheating" somewhat. Better, I think, to make it so a mistake costs you some time and effort into going back to the original spot but not having to go through the entire map. Lots of climb maps are huge, and it stinks to see five to ten minutes of work down the drain thanks to lag or whatnot.

Also, if you are using deadly polygons, make sure they're easily identifiable. Really, all polygon types should be consistent, so if a green polygon was safe to walk on at the beginning, it should remain so through the end of the map. I don't think the map as to be "map art," but just because it's a climb map doesn't mean it should necessarily be made of a jumble of brightly colored polygons. I also don't care to see jet fuel in a climb map. If jets are allowed, then I think the map should really be designed with that in mind. Still, jetting around isn't as challenging or fun as just using stock player movement to get around.

Just to follow up on Mr. Domino's reply, I'd like to add something I thought up while in the loo :

/\                                    /Deadly
   \                                /
    \             ________/
     \            |Goal   |     ________
deadly\        --------     |
--------           ______|
too high to   |
jump up after|
fall________|

The preferred outcome of war is peace. Ironic, huh ?

Soldat basically is a multiplyer network game, so to provide proper on-line gameplay map should be short enough to be complete in 10-15 minutes, should not have any lag-related obstacles since Soldat don't offer precision player movement especially for players whose ping is bigger then 0, should not have seriated obstacles - they are getting people bored, should have visual implementation and style on the level higher then average to make people even more intrested in exploring whole map and reaching goal(flags).
