dm_DSM-68,1 *The map with the freaky name.
« on: January 25, 2007, 09:19:28 pm »
For the 'nth time I will open my map release like this :
I map mostly for gameplay and little for style.
Please don't blast this topic into oblivion with endless streams of 't3h sux0r' and 'craps d00d', as this is considered flaming. Or at least I think it is. In any case, this map isn't full of sceneries or other goodies that people have come to expect in current generation maps, no, this is a simple and 'down to earth' design. I present to you : Deep Space Mine 68,1.

Overview

The upper level of this map is designed to be where the majority of the fighting is; there are more medkits, hiding spots and ledges. The lower level, however, is designed for avoiding firefights, eprhaps if this were adopted to HTF it could be used as an area to which people escape.

Info
Suggested Players : This is one huge map, so I suggest anywhere between ten to fourteen players.
Waypointed : No way hosee, that's a job for more experienced mappers ;)
Sceneries : Zip, nada, nil. Didn't you read the introduction ?
Fun Level : N/A (post your opinions, will be averaged into a /10 pt score).

Let's go, whaddya think ?

I'm sorry, but the award for excessively retarded posts has already been given to Terrordog.

I don't think I'd be good for a review since I generally dislike race-style and ice and suchlike maps...

The middle island is pretty interesting, and the polygon lights are a cool idea, but I think their vertex colors can be improved upon (make them more realistic instead of each having the same color regardless of their position) and they might look better if you manually formed each one instead of paste-dumping like that. :P I don't like how the rest of the map is so flat in terrain; even if it's icy you could put jumps and trenches, stuff like that. Interesting layout.

Polygon lights ? Paste-dumping ?

I may be insulted if I had any clue as to what you're saying.

For the parts that I do understand, though : the reason there aren't any trenches is for mobility. For someone to go from the top to the botom, they have the short way, and the long way. To insure a reasonably fast-paced game, there are no interruptions along the outer curve, but I'll put some in the bottom part-thing. Jumps'd be cool, but the last time I tried that I ended up having a bunch of saw-campers hiding where no one could shoot 'em. Without said lumpies, a couple bullets can take out campers miles away.

That is a horrible name, and you're doing your map a disservice by giving it a title no one will remember. :P Otherwise, it's a surprisingly pretty map as far as the color usage goes. I find it really appealing, though the polygon placement is a bit sloppy and jagged. As far as being a DM map, you 1) don't have to preface the file name with "dm_" since there is no "dm_" designation for DM maps :P , and 2) it's too sectioned off to really function well I think. You'll have campers in the outside area, sprayers in the middle, and no real "in between" action or alternate routes/methods to approach targets in those secluded parts of the map.

I'm aware of the the polygon placement, it's a notable problem that occurs when I start medium sized maps. I like to put detail into what I make, but the sheer time constraint of making large maps at high quality is what keeps the poly-placement quality down. I will however be walking into a bunch of free time, so I'm going to go overhaul my next map ;). The prefix 'dm' still applies IMHO, would you want to play a team match on an unwaypointed map ?

And impossible-to-remember names have been my strong point since kindergarten :)

Just because it looks bad doesn't mean it will have good gameplay. This map fails in both aspects. Buggy polygons, simple but bad and unoriginal layout with sprayable tunnels and bottlenecks. No scenery leads to online play problems. Dumb name. Also don't use the dm_ prefix, that's retarded, dm maps don't have a prefix.

Please, do the world a favor Boxo and never become a doctor. I'm sure the suicide rates would skyrocket overnight ;)

In any case, they're all valid points. This is my second DM map, so I'm still learning about the style I'm supposed to use. Your enlightening, if rather blunt, opinions will definately help in my next DM map (on which I am working on as I type), so I hope there's a noticeable improvement.

On a sidenote, good lord man that avatar is going to burn holes through my eye sockets ! It's so ... jiggly !

The weird fairy lights you find in animes around the central tree thing. Their vertex colors are all the same, and all you did was grab one and duplicate it over and over again :P
