just type what you want to say in the text area (assuming you are in a channel)
I also believe there are one or more topics on how to use IRC on the forums.

IRC is a chat program, in the ways of typing.
Simply type your message in the bar on the bottom and hit enter.
You can also send a Personal Message (PM) to someone by double-clicking on their name in the box on your right. A new chatwindow should open, everything said in that window will be kept between you an the other person.
There are also some ranks inside an IRC channel, I'll mention those who are important:
@ - 'Ops' Operator - Usually the dministartor(s) of the channel
v - Voiced - People who are able to talk or who are higher than unvoiced people.
Unvoiced - People who can't talk in the channel or are just lower than voiced people.

Sometimes unvoiced people can still talk, but that depends on the channel settings.
Also, some useful commands:
/join #channel --> Use this to join a channel named #channel.
/server server.com --> use this to connect to an IRC server named server.com

Until here my extremely short introduction to IRC, I'll also paste some useful links:

I'm really impressed at the number of people helping out in this case rather than flaming.  Thanks guys.

Offtopic: No problem VijchtiDoodah, I can remember my first interactions with a computer. In that situation, the last thing you need is getting flamed or no-one helping you out. Besides, it only takes 5 minutes to be friendly and post a good explanation on how things work, and it spares several hours or weeks for the topic starter, Psycho, to figure things out all by himself.

Ontopic: Here are some other guides, after reading those, you're quite experienced in IRC :).
Also, I suggest using mIRC. After a while it will say you have to pay for it in order to keep using it, just wait a few seconds and the "continue" button will become activated again.
I've quickly looked up some more links which I think give a good explanation of how things work. You can also get them by searching for "mIRC Guide" on Google.

More mIRC Guides:
Magic-League
mIRC
AfterDawn
FlexBeta

So, I think you got flooded with helpful links now, I hope you get the hang of it without having to read them all ^^. Also, if you're ahaving questions I'm sure you'll get help when you ask for it in one of the Soldat channels :)

Ahh, the forums have proved it's worth after all.

Actually I think we're rendered more mature these past few months. Even the lounge has become less of shithole these days, and it seems we're finally getting it together a bit.

Nice going soldatforums!..
