some simple questions
« on: April 24, 2007, 10:19:44 pm »
I have some polyworks questions, I forgot most of them and when I remember them, I will post them here, but the one (yes only one, I have a bad memory) I remember is:

what are colliders and how do I use them

I also need help with shading, and other detailing like that.

if a mod or someone who's really good at mapping help me with these?

Colliders stop bullets, explode grenades, and are generally used in conjunction with scenery (eg a collider under a crate)
Place them like normal objects, size can be changed via the radius option in the properties window.

Someone else cover shading... I suck at it so I dont want to pass on bad advice...

You can find many tutorials here.

I actually made a shading tutorial several years ago (here), but it's written for the official MapMaker.  All of the ideas are still useful, but the tools you see in some of the images won't match up to the ones you'll actually be using.

Shading... basically, plot out a bunch of polygons, and use the Vertex Selection Tool to grab batches of connected vertices. Select a color in the Palette window and use the Paintbucket Tool to give them a color. Study default maps, like ctf_B2b, and perhaps Blox (and not only the colors, but also vertex placement), to get a feel for what it might be like.
