High-res textures?
« on: April 30, 2007, 02:36:37 pm »
After playing Soldat for a few hours at 1280x1024, I realized that one of the things that really needs updating is the textures.  The current textures are fairly small, and don't look good when playing at the higher resolutions available to registered users.

My suggestion is that someone (MM or someone else) makes a High-res texture pack for the textures that are included with the game itself, and that map-makers who make their own textures will, from here on out, create higher-resolution textures.

I dunno if this would be possible (the resolution of the textures might be hard-coded into Soldat), but it might be something that could be included in a future release.  It would be a very nice addition to Soldat, would draw in people who look at graphics before gameplay, and would make the general Soldat experience that much better.

EDIT: I just realized that this should go in Game Improvements/Suggestions.  Whoops.  Can some mod move it there?  Thanks in advance.

Correct me if I'm wrong but highres textures won't do the trick here.
Soldat doesn't even change your resolution... it just stretches the window to fit in your screen.

doesn't the res of the textures depend on the map maker? cause polyworks can work with any size texture, it just stretches, cuts, and moves the texture to match the polygons.

It will if we change that and scale everything.

this would work in theory, if:
- the guy who makes it really knows what hes doing [this goes towards animations aswell, i believe] (doubtful)

- soldat gets yet another (major) update, which allows highres textures to be used as intended in the first place [its already been established that the game currently does NOT support it] (even more doubtful)

either this kid has a lightbulb up his butt, or his colon has a great idea.

And new maps would have to contain full set of different sized textures? And scenery i think..
Soldat would be 10 times bigger than now.

It would take more than changing the textures, but you are correct if they were bigger Soldat would look completely different.

Making high-res textures was the first thing that popped into my head, but it would be nice to see something implemented that kept the polygon textures from becoming really disgusting and blurred when playing at higher resolutions.
