Something weird is going on...

At last, I ran into a bug [I think!], and it's a big 'un.

In-game, the soldat text is all weird and bold-faced, although the fonts configuration says there's no bolds turned on.

And in Polyworks, there's a blank text next to the numbers in Map Info box...

My theory? I tried playing 1.3.1 from the CD. I think that it is...

What do you mean by "tried playing 1.3.1 from the CD"?

If you mean that you're trying to play directly off a burned CD rather than installing to the hard drive, then... why the hell would you do that.

Before downloading 1.4, I made a backup copy of 1.3.1 to the writable CD. It seems to be okay now that I restarted the computer.
