Getting into a computer...
« on: July 16, 2007, 01:03:27 pm »
My dad locked himself out of his own laptop, so what's the site where I have to download this file, burn it on a CD, place it in the computer, take it out and put it in my computer, then send it to some site where I wait for 5 days for the password.

http://www.loginrecovery.com/ (This site seems to be down, however, so I don't know how it works...)

http://www.openwall.com/passwords/microsoft-windows-nt-2000-xp-2003 (Those are all sharewares with free trials...)

I hope some of those help.

you could boot from a cd for the time being, or just reformat, or you could not be an idiot and not password protect your OS, it's not like it does anything.

There was a tool I used to gain control over admin accounts, but it required a 3.5" Disk.

Do a search on admin recovery or something like that and there will be boot CD tools.

Do a-4-year-old's advice; boot from the original cd and you should be able to reset the password.

That worked like 6 years ago for me on Windows ME, at least.

I suppose it's worth putting this forward: is it better to have a master password, or loads of different ones? Because obviously it is hard to remember loads of passwords, but if someone find out your master password many of your accounts are comprimised. What is best?

I use a master password for little things like these forums - and then for important stuff like Paypal, I add a number combo to the master password.

How what you are refering to works is using a cd to read the windows registry and get the hash of the password and then involves giving the hash to a site which eventually manages to brute force it.

anyway, this site might help: http://www.petri.co.il/forgot_administrator_password.htm

Couldn't you boot the thing up in safe mode, then rid yourself of the password through there? When I was having password problems with my desktop, I just jumped into the admin account using safe-mode, then deleted the passwords. Unless this is a different issue or I'm just clueless when it comes to laptops, it ought to work unless there's a way to password protect the admin account as well :-\. I haven't found a way quite yet.

This sounds like it might be a different problem though...whatever. This is my advice for now.
