So I decided to work on my editing skills a bit. I'm finding it very limiting with Windows Movie Maker, but Vegas is way to hard for me at the moment...

All I saw were some title screens, fade in to black, and fade out to black. Even though it is WMM, you can use some creativity to make the little effects go a long way (or download some of your own).

And I suggest you just skip WMM and take time to learn Vegas.

editing clips together isn't too hard, just do it a bunch of times to get the feel of it, and mess with the effects a bit, maybe one little test movie is enough to learn them.
