SoldatPage RandomSig - Testing
« on: August 08, 2007, 06:08:35 pm »
Testing RandomSig from SoldatPage...

EDIT:
Yay, it works, try pressing F5 several times and a new signature will appear.
I've only uploaded two signatures to be displayed randomly so you'll have to press F5 several times in order to see the other image. I'll add some more later on, when I have time :).
There's one problem though, the forum automatically inserts the images width and height, and does not update that dynamically. So you can only use signatures of the same size or they'll get stretched or shrinked a bit.

SoldatPage is a soldat community website. Used to be pretty large in 2004 but the server crashed so I had to restart from scratch.
You might want to check out the SoldatPage website.

PNG and JPG could be supported, if there's any interest in it.

EDIT: Alright, added PNG and jpeg support.
EDIT2: Oh, this is the  5000th post in this section :P

you can always have your signature randomizer pad smaller sigs out to the size of the biggest one, that way they don't get stretched

Ooh, good idea bricks, thanks a lot. I only have one problem though.
I'd need to convert the sig to gif to apply some transparency. This means quality loss and possible larger filesizes (if converting from jpeg) which might interfere with the 20KB Forum rule.

Pero: Click. I knew that question was going to be asked so I took a screenie :P.

NO FUCK GIF USE .png
as long as it doesn't have like 2,000,000,000 colors in it should be small.

That's exactly the problem, I can't make sure the file is under 20KB anymore.
Also, PNG transparency is very buggy on some browsers (IE for example).
However, good idea though, thanks.

Yeah but if you upgrade to the latest version of IE then alpha transparency works just fine, but who gives a shit about people who refuse to use decent software?

If you can I would just tell your resizer to just convert with the least quality possible/tolerable,

Or you could just display the edited pictures for the user to check, it is their responsibility to not break the rules.

It is their responsibility, but it's pretty tough for admins to find a signature that's breaking the rules when they're displayed randomly. However, I'll give it some more testing and see if I can't come up with something else.
The main topic is in the fan apps section, I'll post it there when I got an idea. I'll also post here if this topic is still on the first page ;).
Thanks for the suggestion(s).

PNG on the whole is generally the largest internet-compatible graphic file format... PNGs, especially Alpha PNGs, will be around 50% of a comparable BMP. Oftentimes, PNGs have to be made very small dimensions-wise to fit the 20kB rule. (had the same headache doing my sig below, had to resort to GIF). You might be interested in PNGout, though, which is a PNG optimizer than can give around a 20-30% reduction (on average) in PNG file size.

Nice program, just created a soldatpage account to get it. Btw...what's the forum code that'll take you to a link when the image is clicked?

[1url=http://www.google.com/][1img] ImageURL [1/img] [1/url]
-> Remove the number ;).

Thanks!

You see, that's the problem. I'd have to convert ALL images to PNG, so many of them (which were originally GIF for example) will be more than 20KB after the 'comporession'. Anyway, I'll check out the PNGout thingy, thanks ;).
