What's In a Game
« on: October 04, 2007, 04:16:54 pm »
What do you look for when you are buying a game. If you are like me you don't buy games often and like to make an informed descision. Do you read up on them, ask friend's, what. Do you want the crazy action games, awesome shooters, stategy, or long RPG's? Quite frankly I'm just curious. I personally like a lot of everything and tend to read Nintendo Power for most stuff. (Only own systems made by the Big N) I also value friend's opinions a lot. So pretty much, how do you make a descision and what kind of games.

I enjoy a good story. Also, I like those games that takes you so far that you feel like you're actually bonding with the characters. Like, you might become a little sad if one char has to leave the story or something. Also, i like adventure and fantasy. In fact, final Fantasy has been some of the games I've played the most. And ofcourse Zelda. Probably Final Fantasy X and The legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time. Man, i've enjoyed many hours in front of the screen with these..

but I like good shoot'em-up games as well. I was a huge fan of goldeneye for the n64, and I was unbelievably good at it also! Seriously, I had quite a few mates who had it as well, and I totally rocked'em :D Good times, good times.
I fucking miss all you cunts!

Reviews don't mean shit, and my friends suck at recommending games. So for me I just look at the gameplay and see if I would enjoy it.

I like the good plots, but at the same time a good game of Guitar Hero is totally worth it. I'm so glad 3 is going to be released for the Wii. I think most reviews are crap, but NP pretty consistantly has reviews I agree with. The only games I don't like that much are sports, driving, and a good chunk of shooters. (the reason I include shooters is there are a lot of shooters that are really similar and most don't constitute a new game)

I like good character customization, good physics, good graphics... and good gameplay overall. I also like it to be balanced unlike some 2d shooters i have seen where there is this one ship with the best upgrade in the game firing out 50 frickin lasers at a time completely obliterating anything in it's path. I hate those 2d shooters.

He said he hates ---->THOSE<---- 2d shooters. What, was that one sentence the only part of his post you read?

A game needs to run smoothly, have good physics, good gameplay (obviously), and not look like it was slapped together to meet a deadline.

I'd also prefer multiplayer, and in multiplayer I'd prefer co-op. But it's not neccesary....

I want the game I buy to last.

eg. a first person shooter game...

Bioshock - I would never buy this. You finish the campaign once, maybe twice, then what? It's useless lol.
I would most likely get board half way during the first run-through anyway.

UT3 - I would buy this. It has options... possibilities :)
You can play single player, against bots, multiplayer; there are different game types... and even when you're done, there will be huge amounts of mods.

For me, bots are important.
In a FPS or RTS game, if it doesn't have bots, I won't really play that much.
Another thing that ties into this is co-op.
Being able to run through the singleplayer missions with friends - very fun. I buy games with co-op.

Some are alright, multiplayer only - like COD2 and FEAR, they don't have bots, but are still fun to play multiplayer... but still I wouldn't really want to buy them.

Soldat - so much playability. Virtually never gets boring LOL

HL2 - when you add in Ep1, Ep2, Portal, TF2, Deathmatch, and CS - it's a pretty good thing.

Quake Wars - it's got bots, so I'd be happy to buy it. Unless it turns out to be crap... but it's got pretty good reviews so far lol

Mechwarrior 5 - if they ever make this, I'll buy it. Really quickly. And love it, a lot.

StarCraft - this is a no brainer. There are SO many things you can do with SC. Single player, multiplayer, UMS games, etc. I just hope SC2 is as good.

I'm not much of a gamer, but yesterday I bought Team Fortress 2 because of the videos for it on Steam.  If you have a steam account, browse the store and download the free videos for TF2 named "Meet the Engineer" "Meet the Heavy" and "Meet the Soldier"

They're hilarious.  They showed me the attitude of that game and 10 minutes later I bought it.  I haven't bought a video game in years (I haven't pirated any either, I just don't game much)
