Discussion: How do you make a map...
« on: October 13, 2007, 12:57:25 am »
....to creep people out. It's pretty close to Halloween and I feel I need to do a Halloween-themed map.

Making it dark and creepy with weird lighting are factors I want to include in my map.

Trouble is, I can't create a atmosphere THAT creepy. I want to create an atmosphere where people (including their 2-d character) feel trapped and an ominous air of the map wafts around them.

If you got what I'm saying so far, how about some tips to help present the atmosphere I intended for?

Meh, something such as saw, a closed enviroment with plenty of dark vertexs. Probably leading to a graveyard outside, if you could lightning, half moon, edit the rain gmp. to make it heavier.

I don't think it's possible to creep people out with a Soldat map. It's not a horror movie, it's like a static picture. No music, no special effects, no animations. How scary a static 2D picture can be?

Well, for one thing, if there's anything needed to improve soldat, it's letting some animated .gifs in maps.

And for another, going through a map with scary music might help it a bit.

I was partially inspired by the upcoming game, Dead Space.

Such a shame.

A painting can creep you out more than anything and a painting is just a 2d picture too. a map is just a painting you can shoot people in.

of course it would require originality beyond glowing pumpkin heads and graveyards and we're not gonna see that here. if you were any good you wouldn't be wasting your time making stupid levels for some silly 2d shooter (unless you're me lols)

Put corpses. Lots of corpses. And splatters of blood.
For signatures, you are allowed only one image in your signature which may not be wider and taller than 300 and 125 pixels, and may not be over 20kB in file size. No BMPs are allowed.

So whats wrong with graveyards and glowing jack-o-lanterns. I've been thinking of doing a map that has your generic halloween elements. Doesn't have to be original. But if ya want creepy and dark - that works too. It would be nice to have some differring halloween themed maps around or on Halloween.

maybe you can get some inspiration from these maps:

they are pretty scary. you will need to play the maps to get the atmosphere though, overviews dont say a thing.

Viggoloniggo's Flesh and htf_Saw.  They both have a lot of scenery to enhance the theme for the map.  I suggest to add some scary images and base the map off of something like these two did.

If you want something fun and scary make the map completely black and then put several lights here and there it gives the soldat player the feel that its night time in a creepy abandoned cave..It's just an idea XD
