Ping
« on: November 18, 2007, 06:32:58 pm »
hey, I have been playing Soldat for 3 years, off and on, and have seen the word "ping" a lot.  What does this mean and why do I keep getting kicked for having a ping of 800?

The ping number on the F1 list ingame, shows how good connection you have with the server. The lower ping, the better. A ping of 800 is insanely high, and either means you are playing on a server located far away from you, or that you have a really bad internet connection. (Like 56k bad)

Try and sort servers by lowest ping in the lobby, and you shouldnt be kicked quite so often.
(or upgrade your internet speed if that is the problem)

ping's number is actually a measurement of the amount of time in nanoseconds for you to communicate with the server and for the server to get back to you. a lot of ping will make everything "messed up" you see things later and overall behind everyone else.

It's actually in milliseconds. a ping of 800 means it takes a packet 800 milliseconds, or 0.8 seconds, to make a round trip from you to the server and back.

The internet is too slow. Didn't UCLA already find a way to send an electron from point a to b faster than the speed of light. There's even negative velocity, which would mean you could have a "minus" ping... like a ping of -50 for instance. When you go to shoot someone, they die before you pull the trigger. We should have super high speed internet by now - where a player from NA can play on a European server with ping of 5, lol. Come on scientists.

There is something we like to call costs. You see with these things called "costs" we can't make the internet a theoretical time machine.
