Poop's Soldat Guide: Article 2 (F1) [all]
« on: February 21, 2008, 11:46:22 pm »
Article Name: The F1 Button
Target Audience: All

I am going to start off with something relatively simple, but something many players can work on.

If you are one of those players who press F1 to check the score at literally every opportunity possible, you are one of those players that are making a huge mistake. To keep it simple, F1 is NOT your friend . I have stated the reasons why this is the case below:

1.    Many times, players press F1 so much that it actually affects them directly in soldat. Someone may press F1 right after they kill someone, which slows down their movement, or causes them to die if someone catches them by surprise when they are not expecting it. You might think F1 is not affecting you directly, but if you play for a few weeks without F1, you will notice that it was affecting you directly. Not only do your fingers have to move from one spot to another, but your attention is also divided.

2.   Many players who press F1 are pressing it to check their own ratio. In 3v3 CTF, kill-death ratio is one of the, if not the most overrated displays of player performance. To keep it simple, K/D means literally nothing, and if you are pressing F1 to check your own ratio, most likely you are attempting to get a good K/D ratio. Getting a good K/D ratio does not mean you are helping your team win. Let’s say player A is playing player B low on ctf_Laos. Player A is constantly rushing while player B just plays defensive and camps. Player A gets killed almost every time, but 1 or 2 times he is able to make it through player B’s defense and manages to get 2 caps. If player A went 15-30 in this round, and player B went 30-15 K/D ratio wise, who has helped their team win?

3.   Some players who press F1 are pressing it to check other players’ scores. Why would you want to know how other players are doing? A majority of the time it will be a distraction. If your teammates are doing really badly, you may get pissed off, and instead of concentrating on your own performance you may start blaming your teammates or whining about their performance. If you are doing really badly, but your teammates are doing well, you may change your play style so your score does not look bad at the end of the round. And as I mentioned previously, you do not need a good score to help your team win a round.

At some points, you do want to use F1 to check how much time is left in the round, or maybe check if a player is performing really badly whereas you should change strategy or switch routes. However, you do not need to press F1 more than 3-5 times per round to accomplish the things mentioned above. You should absolutely NEVER press F1 when you are actually alive. You should absolutely NEVER press F1 to check your own score (You can check that using the kill counter at the bottom right hand corner). The next time you play a 3v3 clan war or deathmatch, limit yourself to 3 F1’s per round ONLY when you are respawning. As you do this more and more, you will get used to not pressing F1, and I guarantee that for most people this will improve your performance.

I usually press F1 to see how the team I am on is doing (if they need to change positions from Low to High etc...)

excellent guide that helped me, poop xD
hmm I reckon it really isn't useful in DM, cause as you said above, people who press F1 almost always try to check their K/D ratio, and as you sort of stated, it may well ruin their K/D while checking it.

Because poop is much better than you thus knows more than you.
Thus, he has more rights than you.
Thus, you suck.

I really only check to see how much time is left in-game.  But this guide is really useful, a lot of the information made sense and I'll keep a copy.
