Anyone 3D Model?
« on: March 20, 2008, 08:51:00 pm »
3D modeling Gallery/Anyone model?

I used to be really into 3D modeling in my still newb days, and I ended up becoming not too bad at it. I and another couple of my friends thought we were cool enough to design a 3D game, and I guess we are still trying to (?). The game never worked out because you sorta need a coder that knows C++ scripting to get anywhere... and we lacked a scripter. We made some pretty decent models though (although they are still amateur).

So: point in this thread is to see if anyone else 3D models, and to ask what program they use and stuff. Also for anyone to show off work to feel good about themselves ;).

A sample of my models:

Villa

Oil Lantern

Kitchen Knives

Huge Unwieldy Axe

These are various examples of what I've done from different periods of experience, the villa being the most recent model and the latest UV mapping attempt of mine (textures were all pulled from random sources of the internet because it was a trial-run).

(If a thread has been made like this...*shrug*)

Eh, sorta self advertising but you have to start somewhere ::): Stal Studios

Yea, forgot to add that. I do use Blender 'cause it's free, and that's the first modeling program my friend and I considered.

That knife looks awesome man. How long did it take? Oh, and by the way, C++ is not a scripting language such as PHP / Ruby / Python / etc. A scripting language is one that doesn't have to be compiled and is just parsed when it's ran. A language like C++ gets compiled into bytecode.
There are other worlds than these

I think the knives and villa looked best, I didn't like the look of the oil lantern though

3rd, 4th topic like this?

Interesting timing though...
I tired a new distribution method earlier today.

Ah, your right about C++... Well, the original organizer of the project is now taking the time to tune themselves up on C++ so we may be able to get somewhere someday.. as a question of how long the knife took? I dunno, it's been at least a year since I modeled it...

Eh, well I'll give an estimation of how long each model took me:

Villa: You'd be surprised as to the simplicity of the actual model. To create, about 2.5-3.5 hours...Texturing took be another hour and a half to find textures and to texture.

Oil Lantern: It's been even longer since I modeled this. Maybe 2 and a half hours? Rendering it with the light took me a little while.

Kitchen Knives: Hurm...I believe I modeled this during the summer, so to model this one, it took me a good deal of time. Probably upwards of 6 hours just for the modeling. I actually took a picture of an actual knife, then used it as the texture :P. Texturing took about 45 minutes, then rendering: about 30 minutes. Altogether: almost 8 hours (not all in the same day..)

Huge Unwieldy Axe: I had already modeled the axe head prior for another model, so I took the same axe head from my first axe model and slapped it onto this because I liked it so much. All in all, about an hour for this. To get it rendering right, a little bit longer. Twas a quickie.

Yep, summary of time taken. Has anyone ever considered 3D modeling? (if they haven't done it already)

It can be pretty annoying in the beginning. I personally never took any tutorials, but learned the basics through my friend, then screwed around to learn more. Basically, I learned by messing up and screwing around for a year, lol. I could still be considered an amateur because I may be missing key concepts, but so far I haven't done all too bad.

That looks kinda cool...I haven't gotten into anything like that ???

Edit:

I looked at some of your animations. There are rather interesting :)
