Wow...

I am astounded. The first thing I did was consult the integrated help, chose internet, setting up a connection. I did what it said and guess what, it works! Unlike the lousy windows help you get. Everything works fine, I never have to see the username and password screen again, it's just so nice. I just noticed that some apps tend to load slower, but those are some like add/remove and preferences, administration stuff.
I won't be touching XP anytime soon now...
thanks for all the help I got here people

Congrats! You found linux's strengths! And no one had to give you a long winded speech.

Actually, I think FLAB made subliminal messages all over this forum, and plans to take over the world with Lin.
Anyway, I almost convinced a couple of friends to switch on ubuntu. Most of them don't even play much games, just browsing the internet, and instant messaging.

One more question though, could Crysis be played using Wine? And if it could, atleast theoretically, how big of a performance hit would it be?

There are some games that Wine supports, but as of right now most don't.  The games that do work in Wine typically run better in Wine than they do on Windows (WoW, for example)

Ok, I figured that  I can do without windows for now, since I don't play any games really. So I reformatted and made a fresh ubuntu install. For the sake of it, I tried the alien arena, but I have some driver issues. I have an ATi x1650 PCIe, and athlon 64 3500, of course with 64 bit ubuntu installed. Any experiences with ati drivers?

Go to System -> Administration -> Hardware drivers and enable the ATI driver listed there (and then restart your computer)

Thanks, I did that before I read your post, but a few games that I've tried flicker. I can't get the graphics to work properly.

afaik, ATI only just started releasing a lot of Linux drivers. The one in the Ubuntu repository might not be the most recent version, I have no idea.

You can try downloading and installing the latest ATI driver for your card here:
http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html
There are other worlds than these

Note that at some point in the future, the best ATI drivers are going to start coming from the community (yes, even for 3d accelerated apps) since AMD has opened up the hardware specs (or will be, I forget) for all of its hardware.

Typical.

Give them some time. Doesn't wine's site have a list of games that it supports?

You can see a list of all of the applications they support and how well they're supported by going to http://appdb.winehq.com

Also, for more reading about Soldat in particular in WINE and how their voting works (how they decide what to work on): http://tns.u13.net/?p=45

I believe the games he posted about in the thread are not using wine, as they can run natively on linux.

yeah, I didn't even make that connection.  I know Will is talking about native games, but I was just blindly answering 4 year old's question :P
