I have a serious problem with my drivers.
« on: April 11, 2008, 08:12:52 pm »
Ok, I'm trying to install a new graphic driver for this horrible computer.  Its not really that bad, it has 512mb of ram, and its running on a Nvidia GeForce Go5700, thats what it says.  I'm trying to update it, but it gives me this error.

Now, I've tried that Driverclean app, I've tried different releases.  I don't know what is going on.  Also, I typed "eventvwr.msc" in Start>Run; and I looked in System to see my event log from my Nv (which means Nvidia).  And this is what the description says, "The driver nv4_disp for the display device \Device\Video0 got stuck in an infinite loop.  This usually indicates a problem with the device itself or with the device driver programming the hardware incorrectly.  Please check with your hardware device vendor for any driver updates".

Believe me, I did a lot of research, but going here seems like my last hope, since I can't find out whats wrong.  Can you guys help me?

Are you sure you're trying to install the correct drivers?

It looks like you're installing the wrong drivers for the card you have.

Is this a new video card or one that you've had for a while?

This is a card that I've had for awhile.  Its not a new card, its a Nvidia GeForce Go5700, this card is pretty old  I guess, because when I went to the Nvidia website, to get my drivers I put in the slot where you put "M/Go" and it only has it for the 7 series.

It's a laptop card right? Then you probably will have to get the drivers from the manufacturer of the laptop.

Its no a laptop, its a desktop, but I went to Start>Run>typed "dxdiag", then I looked at my video card, and it says "Nvidia GeForce Go5700".

So I have to call the manufacturer?

Nah I just thought that the Go was a laptop version (as it says Geforce M/Go) and my two 8800M GTX are the mobile version. I bought my laptop from dell and I read that in order to get drivers for it I had to look on dells downloads as nvidia doesn't make any. They're specially configured for the system.

Maybe you have a mobile card on a desktop? ;/
What brand is the computer? HP, Dell,? Go to their website and look for driver downloads.

I have a screenshot of it.  I just don't understand at all anymore.  Maybe I should just give up.

Product Type:    GeForce
Product Series:   GeForce 5 FX Series

from nvidias downloads? That should be it I think.

Yes, if this is a brand-name computer that came with the card, then go to the Dell/HP/whoever site and get the drivers from there.Ā  You should really only get the drivers from the NVIDIA site if you know they'll work or if you bought the card and installed it separately yourself

edit: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us you could also try Option 2 on here, but like I said... you should go to the computer manufacturer's website instead.

Ok, I went to the manufacturer's website, and there only have a nVidiaĀ® GeForceā„¢ FX Go5700 Graphics Controller driver, the version is 6.2.1.2 which is old, and they don't have any other video drivers.

Thus is the problem with computer manufacturers who suck... they don't keep up on their drivers.

Did you try the autodetect thing (Option 2) and see what happened?

I did option 2, and this kind of baffles me.  "NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5700 62.12 Your PC currently has the latest driver installed for your GPU. No driver update is necessary at this time".

Is this true?  Is this how far my graphic card goes?

That card was made before the dinosaurs even walk the earth >_<

BTW why do you want newer drivers? It's not like your games will run better and I also guess that if there is a final version then it's how good/stable it will be. You do realise that they can't update their cards with the same drivers forever.
