Chatting on Soldat help
« on: April 11, 2008, 04:08:29 pm »
Hey I'm new to Soldat.

In fact, I downloaded it this morning  :P

Whenever I try to chat on Soldat, the whole screen freezes and so I'm forced to Ctrl+Alt+Delete the dang thing.

How can I chat on Soldat without the game freezing?

Yeah you should really check the settings because soldat turns off chat automatically if you download it in morning.

I had the exact same thing and it was fixed by putting off Dithering. So don't try to be a smartass and talk like that about anyone.

Edit: I don't think it was Dithering after I found out what it really does. I'm not sure, probably because I changed resolution, which is impossible unregistered, I can't help.

Make sure you have your latest video drivers, this sounds like it may be related to how Soldat renders text on the screen.

You are using the latest version of Soldat, right? (1.4.2)

Yeah, I'm using 1.4.2.
Every time I just press C, it freezes the whole screen.

How do I check my video drivers?

Lol 'c' doesn't do anything in soldat, just don't press it and you will be fine...
And yeah, 't' is the button for normal chat and 'y' is the button for team chat (appears in yellow and only your team can see it).

What's your processor speed and vid card size? What is your video card or is it integrated graphics (which can range from 8MB to 128MB depending on your computers age)?

Another edit: The font was changed in one of the latest versions of Soldat. As far as I can remember, it caused slowdown to the game on some older machines. It may be the same problem with yours and it causes your game to entirely freeze. You could play around with the font.ini (Which should of course alter chat font.. am I right, or is that a seperate font? I've never had to play with font settings.) and make the text smaller and use a simpler/different font.

Until I know what your system is (processor, vid card or integrated video and vram.. system ram would help also) the only other thing I could suggest atm, based  on personal experience is setting your desktop res to a resolution thats relative to 640x480 (Soldat res). For instance 1024x748 or 1280x1024. My current ATI card has a funny thing, where if my games' resolutions do not either match my desktop resolution or are not relative.. so If I was running a 640x480 game for instance where my desktop was 1280x960, it would lag and run like crap. Don't ask me how or why that works. It doesn't make any sense to me at all and is most likely a driver or card issue on my end. Personally I can't complain though. TF2 runs a lot faster at my native res with the same graphical settings than at any lower resolution. My native res is 1900x1200.

I feel stupid suggesting that, but ati drivers have always been plagued with bugs and other problems. If you should have an ati card or integrated ati, you could try changing the driver too and see if that helps.

That's all I can suggest for now. (And, can anybody tell me if that resolution thing makes sense. It's as if my card refuses to change to and stay at the game's res when in game. It's as if it stays at the native res and then calculates and displays the proper (game's) res frame by frame. It really doesn't make any sense, but if that's what my card was doing, it would sure explain the slowdown and crappy fps at lower resolutions.)
