Help?
« on: June 19, 2008, 11:29:51 pm »
For the life of me I cannot seem to get this under the 20k limit.  I can get close (21k), but not under, after multiple attempts to resize the image, playing with resolution, etc.

Anyone willing to take up the cause or offer some suggestions?

What was the issue?  I've had mixed success and failure with resizing images for avatars.

jpg format sucks.

png is far better.

By the way...to prove my point on why .jpg pictures suck, have you ever seen any high-quality .jpg avatar-sized pictures?

In photoshop instead of saving normally, click "Save for web & devices" There you can toggle between file types, and it automatically decreases the file size somehow. After resizing I did that, and none of the file types went much over 10k.
JPG format was 1k by default.

Here it is on 50% quality. on 100% its 5 times larger in size and with no visual change in quality.

png is often a lot bigger. The whole reason we use jpg is because it is great on size.

One of the reasons why jpeg is usually smaller is because of how lossy the format itself is. Every time you save a jpeg, quality is lost and the image is distorted a little / lot.

With PNG's and GIF's, each pixel is stored in a coordinate plane like way, with jpeg's the pixels are stored relative to eachother, which is why logos mainly containing text on a solid background look like absolute bollocks in jpeg format.

A lot of people seem to be very against JPEG and GIF, and the 'lossiness' argument is an understandable fixation. Don't get me wrong, I was hard-core PNG addict for a very long time, but a lot of forums I visit have stringent rules regarding image size and therefore have forced me to explore the other formats... anyways, JPEG gets a bad reputation because most people can't save a high-quality JPEG. A JPEG saved at quality 8 or above in Photoshop has nearly undetectable loss; also, online, most people won't be scrutinizing your avatar long enough to notice. Granted, JPEG's lossiness is more noticeable for flat-color files; however, remember that flat-color files tend to have few enough colors that 1) PNG will take less space without loss, but 2) GIF's indexing will fully encompass the palette, without loss also, but also much smaller than a comparable PNG. So if you're saving any kind of rendering, use JPEG. If you have a relatively small palette, use GIF. When do you use PNG? Only when alpha transparency is necessary, such as when you want to cut out an irregular form, or have a massive palette that you want to fully preserve, possibly for later rework [obviously larger palette means much larger filesize and so this doesn't pertain to SF avatar formatting choice].

Also, large PNGs sometimes burp with the internet. Haven't found a browser [running FF3] that doesn't occasionally hiccup when loading PNGs yet. Most of you probably haven't noticed it anyways, meh.
