For those of you with xbox360 and prefer mouse/keyboard
« on: July 09, 2008, 12:48:24 pm »
I was actually working on my own analog stick movement - translated through mouse project, ie. using a mouse instead of some tiny stick with my thumb to aim. Who the hell uses a controller to play FPS games!!?? I was using an Arduino, however mouse input abilities are still limited. The arduino and keyboard would be wired to a 360 controller. You have to go through the controller since, the xbox has a peripheral lockout. Only authenticated hardware will run on a 360. Anyway to be less confusing, I've been following a project that is much more superior in translating keyboard and mouse controls to a controller. The XIM - xbox input machine started out as a project to improve the shinyfootiness (goes to inventor of the word "shinnyfoo" and paints inside of his house with it) of the XCM XFPS - a peripheral that you could plug a keyboard and mouse into and hook up directly to the xbox. The XIM group started a second project, which eliminated the need for a useless P.O.S. XFPS. It's now called XIM360.

Here is their website with more information: www.xim360.com

P.S. Normally, I don't advertise another website or some product, but we're gamers here and I'm sure a lot of us have 360's. Plus a lot of us would rather prefer using WASD+Mouse (since we're used to it - Soldat controls as well). I don't think this post otherwise is breaching any rules, but I will respect if the post gets edited, locked, etc.

Thats why game devs love consoles; locked hardware and software, cheap, easy to sell stupid games, like FPS games for gamepads.

Really, people have been praising consoles all the time. "OMG HALO IS SO COOL! FPS WITH GAME PAD IS BEST THING EVER INVENTED". Usually I wonder how much have these console guys really played with PC. Like RTS, you can't play it with a pad. FPS doesn't work out either. Everything sucks, except that consoles are cheap, games are expensive, and graphics are nice.

And no, I won't e playing Gran Turismo with PC, or GTA 4, or Halo, or anything else, but would I want to play them? I doubt it. :p

In other words, I think that consoles are gay. I've had consoles longer than I've had PC, but consoles are boring. :|

Well, I agree with you there Clawbug. However, in my own case, my xbox can play current titles a lot smoother than my PC. I'm at the point where I have to completely buy all new hardware. That is fine. I'll have the money for it... but not soon. If my $300 xbox can run my fav FPS games at 1080p smoothly, well, that suits me fine.. until I build my new PC. With keyboard and mouse support.. it's a cheap Gaming PC alternative. Notice - I said cheap. Otherwise, no. I don't like consoles either, except for my old 8bit and 16bit systems. There were no killer gaming rigs then. Only Sega and Nintendo. Intellivision 2 could have rocked online multiplayer in the 80's if the developers could have fully realized it then. The thing has a modem.

Back on topic. I'm also a Halo fan... and micro$ux successfully suckered me into getting an xbox. A PC version of Halo 3 would have ruled, but they had to sell consoles. I can't help it. I just love Halo. Currently it's second to Soldat. So, at least if I can have the ability to use Keyboard and Mouse, forking out a few hundred to play Halo 3 now rather than the PC version in 2011 is justified for me.

I've played FPS with both ways, I prefer the controller.

When it comes to FPS and RTS games mouse & keyboard is always a superior control setup. With these games you need precision which gamepads are incapable of offering.

If you're using a gamepad then you're using your thumbs to guide the movement and that means it's only really good for directional movement rather than rotational movement as thumbs aren't very coordinated. This is why controllers are always better for driving games, they offer more fidelity for steering whilst lacking precision for movement.
