Dual booting OS X and Ubuntu/Partitioning
« on: July 11, 2008, 11:33:01 pm »
so basically, here's my position:

I switched to mac almost a year ago, and am starting to really miss soldat (i cry at night).  Now, it looks like you can dual boot into Ubuntu via boot camp, which i am very interested in doing (soldat can run on ubuntu right?).  i downloaded the .iso and burned the image to a disk.  i ran ubuntu off of the cd and it looks good minus slight graphics hardware problems (i think?) (and i hope it cleans up if i install).  The only part i'm concerned about is partitioning my internal HD.  It looks very straightforward and simple, its just that everywhere i look it says to backup before you partition.  I'm pretty sure that's only for safety reasons and that apple doesn't want to be liable for lost data, but does anybody know how safe it is?

thats essentially my case/question.

help greatly appreciated, especially since i know some of you know a thing or two about computers  Wink

Yes, Soldat works on Ubuntu with Wine, however, don't expect it to run flawlessly. It has issues, and please let us know about them, there is stickied thread about it in General Discussions section. I am not very sure who maintains the Wine reps for Soldat, if not Stealth. The best way to help would be to report as much issues as possible to the thread for others to know about. Maybe some day we get everything working.

I don't really know. If enough people have tried it, it could be possible to create a thread about it. Or then include the crossover experiences to the Linux/Wine thread.

You could avoid having to install Linux on your Mac and attempt installing Wine directly on your Mac instead. That might work just as well.

i've already tried crossover for mac (if that's what you're referring to), and my conclusion is: can't get the menu and gaming to work in the same run at the same time.

I'm not referring to crossover. Wine is an implementation of the Windows API to Unix/Unix clones (Mac's and Linux fall under this category). Crossover is some kind of Apple proprietary Windows emulator, afaik.

I'm saying, try installing Wine on your Mac, and see if Soldat runs OK in it. (this bypasses the need to install Ubuntu and change around your drive's partitioning)

alright, so wine looks like a no go :(

I downloaded darwine 1.0 installed it, was able to run the config files.  When i got to soldat, i was able to install it, but once i opened soldat, i got the popup (attached image) after ever click in the game.  Also, there were no maps in my start game section, and requesting servers did nothing.
hmm...

btw i got that popup like that (maybe the same) on my pc every once in a while on soldat

Try running Config.exe (inside the folder where Soldat.exe is) and making the settings as minimal as possible and maybe skimming through this, which gives useful information about running Soldat through Wine.

That error also might be coming up because of the video card Macs have. I have absolutely no idea what their features are and whether or not they work with the 3D parts of Darwine.

I don't know, but this might help: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBook. I am EXTREMELY sorry if it messes something up.

i've already seen the ubuntu link, and looked through it, but thanks very much for it.  also the same with the other thread, but not for the same reasons, so i will skim it.

if i do change all the settings though to as low as possible, it shouldn't have anything to do with the maps not showing up should it?

That depends on what you mean by "showing up". If you mean that bug where you can't see the polygons, then no. Only if the settings you choose manage to screw up something else, which could make them invisible.

sorry that i wasn't clear
by "showing up" i meant there are no maps in the map lists inside the game, for all game modes

and i have 65 maps in the maps folder inside the soldat folder; all .PMS

another thing:

the same access violation window pops up in the cofig.exe when i open it and click save and exit; it doesn't just apply to soldat.exe

Date Posted: July 12, 2008, 02:58:19 am
found this in the wine/linux thread:

mm.. now it pops up with 2 errors after opening.
"Can not change Visible on onShow or onHide."
and
access violation on address ...
then I can interact with the main window (start game), but no maps or bots load and I can't see any of the tabs at the top.

try turning on video compatability in soldat.ini

i did a search and found the soldat.ini on my comp (well two of them), but i can't open them -.-

(and idante responded saying it was fixed)

I guess that could be a Mac specific thing. I don't know anything about Macs, but it might be a file permission problem. Maybe try giving the files read and write permission by programs? I don't know how..maybe right click the file and go to properties? (or is it alt + click?)

can't you just install windows on boot camp and skip all the tedious partitioning and configuring and shit and still get support

1. partitioning is a part of boot camp; you have to partition for windows or linux

2. i don't have a windows disc and i aint gonna buy one

Thing hard part might be that Windows only uses one partition. At the very minimum, Linux must have two. One for all the software, configuration files, modules, libraries, user's files, etc. The other for swap space. (virtual ram).

So when you get to boot camp or whatever, allocate a portion of your disk for linux. From that portion, make two partitions. One, ext3, 95% of that space you allocated. The other, (called "linux swap" or something similar), 5%.

Then boot the ubuntu cd, have it use the ext3 partition as / and the other partition you made, as swap.

oh.  i had no idea ubuntu needed two partitions.  Thanks for letting me know.

alright it says on the ubuntu wiki mac page https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBook#Basic%20instructions to partition in the linux installation.  It says making more than 2 partitions in Boot Camp assistant can cause problems

Date Posted: July 13, 2008, 04:35:04 pm
i'm thinking that i would rather make the multiple partitions in disk utility (app) instead of the install disk, since i'm a bit familiar with that

Well, it is always highly recommended that you have two, but you won't need the extra partition if you have a lot of ram. (more than a gig) But then again, it really depends on what you are doing and what programs you are using.

i have 2gb ram.  I'm going to mostly run soldat, browse the web, do some aim, nothing ram intensive, but maybe i still should?

Date Posted: July 13, 2008, 06:03:37 pm
alright i talked to a friend of who's a genius with macs.  He highly suggested that I wait to backup before I partition, so that's what I'm going to do.
