Permanent Ban does it exist?
« on: July 18, 2008, 07:36:55 pm »
Can't you just create a new account by doing some shit first after getting banned, thats what i did. :/ Yeah i might get banned for this but I dont care. :/  Thats what i did. I mean im pretty sure a lot of banned members have done the same thing and are back on the SF. So how can you  make sure a banned member doesn't comeback? O yeah i've admitted ive already gotten banned, so will you ban me again? Isn't pointless?

We can make it so you don't return.

The privilage to create new accounts while "banned" is extended only to those who do not perform truly heinous acts. If you can return quietly and remain here, quietly, often times you can slip back in without anyone raising a stink.

Just don't think we don't know about it.

You can ban IP addresses, ranges... once one account is created with an e-mail address, you can't re-use it... eventually the kiddies will get tired of creating e-mail addresses and trying to find useful proxies.

What do you mean by IP adresses? and ranges? Because cant you just reset your ip by turning your modem off?

Even when you do that your IP stays in a certain range of areas, and they can ban that.

And the inconvienence in that would be the fact that some neighbors may try to access SF, and find they were banned for no particular reason at all...?

Once someone threatened me on soldat, saying he would get an admin to give me a MAC ban, oooh, scary.
What is it?
And can't you ban hardware or something?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MAC_address

A MAC address is the "unique" identifier for your network adapter.

Nobody outside your local network can see your MAC address, so it is impossible for you to ban based on that.  Anyone who mentions that is full of crap

See, the staff have obligation to be here. You have no important duty to come here all the time, especially if most of the community is indifferent to/hates you, so the staff will just keep banning you whenever you come back.

Usually the banned guy gets bored after a few tries and leaves the place. :P Or he tries to behave... and, here, FLAB/Vij. is lenient (from what I've known) and lets back banned members who've reformed since.

And the inconvienence in that would be the fact that some neighbors may try to access SF, and find they were banned for no particular reason at all...?
Heh, this can unfortunately happen, yeah. Usually the people who alert them are those who are already existing members whose IPs get snagged in the middle of a ban, and get the staff to be more wary of the banned IPs to be set.

O ok. Just wondering can admins tell if a banned member has comeback if they really wanted too?

I'm whoever you imagine me to be. :/ But yeah, no one would believe me if i did tell.

Mm... not really, if the guy's covert enough; if he got back in, he could've used any number of proxies, whose IPs are from anywhere in the world. So personality is the identifying factor. Usually morons return as morons. :)

Orly? How would you know I returned if I can change my personality? How do you know I don't have a second account?
(these are just theoretical questions ;))

Do you see that text in the corner that says Logged? That means that the moderators and admins can see what IP you post with every time you post. They can then see if that IP is from the same area, or if it is indeed exactly the same.

I've had to do this in my moderator duties on a different forum.

If this board is anything like the other, it can automatically find accounts with duplicate IPs.

It is usually only be done if there's suspicion that the two members are the same, any way.
