Soldat and computer withdrawals
« on: August 15, 2008, 12:39:46 am »
It's been 3 days since I last slept because I've been so horribly addicted to my computer and Soldat. I can't sleep.

Does anyone know the long-term effects of no sleep and staring at a computer screen for long periods of time can do?

two minutes after clicking on that link I was looking at a picture of Bush sitting with John McCain and some other old guy (senator).
Find the path to that picture from sleep_deprivation.

Anyways the best way to get to sleep is to read a romance novel. Puts me down before the fifth word every time.Oh yeah, death is a side-effect of sleep deprivation.

But I'm not even tired? I've tried to sleep but all I can think about is the computer and I jump up.

Yeah... When you actually get some sleep you will wake up a retard

edit: the answer seems obvious - unplug the computer AND not jump up next time

if you absolutely CAN NOT fall asleep, take some nyquil. If you don't have any, go buy some. if you're too young to buy because of retarded laws and kids tripping on cough syrup(quite fun, actually... but I'm pretty sure nyquil would kill you or at least severely damage your liver. never try to trip on anything that has active ingredients other than Dextromethoriphan), tell your parents to buy you some... if they won't, then I guess you're screwed.

Or you could tell them your allergies are acting up and you need some benedryl.

Or you could always jack some alcohol from the liquor cabinet...

Try smoking pot, that'll make you tired sometimes too. If not tired, it'll definitely make you relaxed and probably lost in whatever music you're listening to... you'll fall asleep eventually.

You could also try running head first into something hard and knock yourself out...

In all seriousness though, I wouldn't worry a whole lot about it. Go to sleep when you're tired. just don't be like those korean World of Warcraft players who sit on the computer for weeks and then die from dehydration/lack of sleep/probably starvation too. If it gets to be a week or more without sleep, then I'd say it's time to ask a doctor.

As for long term effects, you'll eventually die if it goes on for too long. Not sure how long though, and it probably depends on the person.

Eat a lot of bread or just plain food. Make yourself really full, then you'll feel tired.  :)

WARNING: 2 may contain a bit of bad content.

Tell you what... try:

1. Play some relaxing music while sleeping.

2. Do some exercise. Get yourself to sweat and be tired. Even engaging in sexual activities like masturbating is exercise. Depends from person to person though. I'm not encouraging you to do really go and masturbate, I'd rather you just go out for a good run outside, but it may help.

3. Drink something warm. Warm milo, warm water, warm milk, whatever. Just DON'T drink anything with caffeine such as cola and coffee.

4. Eating a lot actually helps. Eat till full.

5. Lock down the computer, one way or another.

If you're asking if you should take a shower, it varies from person to person. Generally, showers refresh someone, making them feel less tired, but at the same time, it makes them feel nice and clean. For me, I take showers before I sleep, because I like to sleep nice and clean, I don't want to feel sticky with sweat. This is completely personal preference.

The rest are some advice that would work for most people.

Wasn't there a kid in China that played WoW for 72 hours straight and died?

Get sleep... hrm. I think the best way to bust the computer addiction is to 1) Get like an iPod with an LCD screen [and short boring games] to wean you off the computer at night [with the added bonus of music while you sleep -- this really worked for me back when I was addicted] 2) Start connecting with a hobby that affects real life. 3) Possibly, getting a girl will help with getting your mind off the computer, but I can't really say since I've never really gone that far...

Try smoking pot, that'll make you tired sometimes too. If not tired, it'll definitely make you relaxed and probably lost in whatever music you're listening to... you'll fall asleep eventually.

Replacing one addiction with another? At least the computer is legal.

Good tips. Engaging in some combat oriented exercise is good , like paintball or laser tag, coz it's fun, like FPSs. I usually end up dead tired afterwards and fall asleep before my body hits the mattress.

Yeah you do, and your entire perception gets whacked. I was working on drawing an epic picture of a girl a while ago and it was my 5th night in a row staying up til 3 in the morning, and by that time I saw some guy on a pogo stick hopping in front of me. I wasn't sure what I was really doing, and I kept redoing her face so it looked 'better' and finally I went to sleep. I woke up the next morning and I'm like, 'wtf she looks screwed up' and immediately trashed the drawing.

Eventually your body will literally make you sleep. Like, one minute you will be awake, the next you will be asleep. So don't go anywhere for awhile until you sleep.

Play battlefield 2 for a few hours, that should do the trick.
