Horusmas
« on: December 15, 2008, 11:26:56 am »
Yes, its fast approaching that time of year. But don't let yourselves get distracted by the Victorian-created commercial holiday about an obese pervert dressed in red who sneaks into peoples houses to bestow gifts. Lets remember what Horusmas is really about... The birth of Horus!

For the uninitiated, Horus was the son and manifestation of Osiris, probably the most ancient of Egyptian Gods. He was born of the virgin Meri, accompanied by Seb (which translates as Joseph) - his foster father in a cave in late December, thousands of years ago. On this fateful eve three solar Gods travelled a great distance, following a bright star, Sirius, to witness the birth.

So spare a thought this Horusmas about what this season is really about. But most importantly enjoy it! Horusmas is a time for giving and being happy, it is a celebration of the birth of our saviour.

Discussion point: Do you celebrate Horusmas? If not, why? What presents do you want for Horusmas?

No I do not, because I have never heard of it. But I might as well search more about this thing.

...wait, if you're atheist, doesn't that mean you don't believe in ANY gods, not just the christian god?

And if that's so, why do you celebrate a day honoring something that doesn't exist?

Quote
Atheism, as an explicit position, can be either the affirmation of the nonexistence of gods, or the rejection of theism. It is also defined more broadly as an absence of belief in deities, or nontheism
Ontopic: No, never heard of it, commercialism has rendered me unable to even care about what christmas was ever supposed to mean, let alone anything that branches off of it.
Lol, internets.

Something similar to what Mangled is referring to is explained in the first 20 minutes of the documentary Zeitgeist.

There's an ancient viking tradition called "blot" that is celebrated 4 times a year, one of them being on the 24th. When the christians came to denmark(..hail!), they spoke of the birth of christ asbeing on the 24th so that the viking tribes would accept the new traditions more easely, seeing as they were on the same date. This occured with a number of dates/traditions. Fucking christianity, just gimme some presents and then get the fuck outta here.

also, pardon if me spelling suck, I'm sorta hungover.

I wear the eye of horus at all times,

i find it funny how christians celebrate blatant pagan ideals by putting a tree in their house + worshipping it by decorating it

Look what Santa dropped by on Fracs!

That's awesome. I thank you for this find. I'll look more into it when I have the time.

I have to say I love conspiracy theories, and its too bad they get ripped to shreds every time. I find them very interesting though. Probably something to do with the fact that people can't accept extremely momentous things can come from very boring people and places. (I'm not so much talking about only this particular one but conspiracies in general like JFK)

EDIT: Didn't mean to hit 'Post' so quickly...

It's a pretty awesome site. I've just spent the past 90-120 something minutes reading it, and it's incredible to think that so many people have fallen for the 'facts' in Zeitgeist without doing the research for themselves. I haven't read his analysis on part III yet, as I plan to do that after actually watching the 3rd part of the film.

I also found it laughable that the maker of the film attempts to use soundbites of comedians to enforce his unfounded message.

Now I need some sleep.

The truth will always be always something that you can mold infinitely. You can present anything as the truth, and someone can present it as false. In the end you shouldn't base your beliefs and opinions on movies or websites, but rather on your own thoughts. Keep your eyes open and use your brains.

You asked me for one of the instances where Zeitgeist was wrong. Instant example: Horus's birth date. Or way. Or his life. And death. And... yeah!

christmas is more like consumermas anyway.
