Fraud.
« on: January 17, 2009, 04:00:25 pm »
My Mom has just fallen victim to credt/check fraud. Someone used her name and SSN to get a $400 loan. They somehow also got her cell/work number and address. What can we do? Apparently people can spend a lot of money and years to fight this. Also, we are poor, so this doesn't help at all.

Good luck, I wish you well. Get in touch with your creditcard company / bank and notify them of your situation. They should know what to do. And if you're doing online payments, don't use IE and make sure you have excellent antispyware antivirus software installed and updated.
There are other worlds than these

Well... We never used online payments. We don't have a credit card.
The weird thing is, this happened through a bank that my Mom had a credit card through 10 years ago. We haven't called them or anything. We are going to have to find proof that we haven't had contact with them in any way.
