Any polyphasic sleepers?
« on: January 25, 2009, 04:55:52 pm »
Anyone know if it's better to skip a nap or to have it late (like more than an hour late)?
Do you want to see me crawl across the floor to you?
Do you want to hear me beg you to take me back?
I'd gladly do it because
I don't want to fade away.

No, but I have considered switching to a 28 hour day.

Btw I'm pretty sure it's better to have it late.

Are you talking about actually sleeping, as in for the night, against delaying that a few hours?  Or just taking a nap during the day?

Don't necessarily "know" what is better, but I'm usually fine if I can push my full eight hours back an hour or three.  If that gets cut short I'm much slower to wake up, and any nap during the day will knock me out.

I'm talking about something different. See polyphasic sleep on wiki.

Ohhh...ouch.  Damn, man.

Nevermind, no idea how to answer your question.  If you do it, has it done you any good?

I don't do the hardcore Uberman thing. I'm still in high school (also, I have a social life...) so that wouldn't work out. I found that stuff on the internet a week ago, and decide to try an Everyman schedule. It wasn't much of an adjustment because it's pretty much what I did already plus some extra naps.

So far no tangible benefits, but I've been really loose with when my naps are happening. I'm keeping records of everything though. We'll see.

I read a guys journal who did it hardcore. After one terrible week of adjustment to the schedule he could instantly get into REM sleep and after 15 minutes of that he was completely refreshed and amazingly alert for however long it was until the next nap time. Pretty interesting stuff.

Yeah, I've considered doing that - but with high school, chances are you won't be tired enough for the first naps anyway. Atleast I wasn't: it takes a good 24 hour full-awake to wear you out at first, and then you have to wake yourself up from your first nap in half an hour... pretty hard stuff.

My sleep schedule is quite screwed at the moment, and I could switch to it now probably - but it still doesn't weed out the worst part of insomnia. You know how boring it is at 4:20 AM when everyone's fucking asleep? :<

Interesting account of someone's hardcore attempt here, with good comment section as well. Yeah, for naps I always use headphones and listen to this. I would have rickrolled you there but then I remembered you're a global mod.

For me, it's more like the horrible guilt of all the things I should be doing, including schoolwork and sleep. I don't like staying up late but going to sleep after not doing the work is just admitting defeat.

Hmm. Interesting article, I'll whack through it overnight - also, lol for the rickroll. I might be the swift one with back-hand punishments, but humour is not an offense. Even if it's cheap :D

That's just your mind fucking with you - like when you dream with someone else and waking up next to your girlfriend. Things can get done, once you force yourself. All it takes is weeding out all the useless activity you waste all that free time with, and you're settled. There's a novelist in hungary who wakes up at 6:00 AM and writes 40, 000 letters before supper. With 500 of his books printed already, that seems like a safe schedule. (:

This is an intense sleeping practice.... Well, I'm not, but my sis only sleeps one hour during night and sleeps three hours during after noon.

So it'll be 5:00 a.m.~6:00 a.m.     7:00 p.m.~10:00 p.m.

Yeah, you know what? Fuck it.

I'm going for the uberman. Being a bad sleeper, I'm going to play around with exhaustion and forced awakenings - already through my first nap. Didn't even realize I fell asleep until the alarm went off. As of now, there's still 40 minutes until my next one.

What's the worst thing that can happen?

Good luck! make sure you don't screw up with the timing though. I hear that's the biggest problem. Tolerance is no more than plus or minus 30 minutes.

I wish this would be considerable for me on a long term basis, seems to me that it does nothing if it's only for a month or two.
Hmmm
I'd probably do it this summer if I don't get have this stupid job my dad wants me to go get (Flagman, you know, that guy that holds the Slow/Stop sign, I dunno if it's different anywhere else, but where I live, you can die off this job, some people don't like it you place them on stop and runs over you, my dad got ran over ounce, eh)
Verily!
