Standards-compliance
« on: March 21, 2009, 05:02:08 pm »
Dunno if this deserves a whole new topic, but here goes.

First of all, I'm a PURIST ARYAN NAZI when it comes to standards, in general. I take pride in conforming. I will waste a day studying the intricacies of the latest IUPAC recommendations for the naming of obscure boron compounds before I can write my lab report, which will of course be typeset perfectly in LaTeX and use all the proper Unicode symbols for various things.

So this has always really pissed me off: why aren't browsers standards-compliant? Because there exists, as far as I know, not a single browser that is fully compliant with any of the latest W3C standards (XHTML, CSS, DOM, SVG), despite what the bastards claim daily. Is it really that hard? All the standards are publicly available in every detail. What's a browsers job other than to render webpages correctly?

Yes, I know that many webpages these days are not written according to standards. F*ck them. I want to see a browser where the first priority is standards compliance. Then comes quirks mode. Where is it? :(
Do you want to see me crawl across the floor to you?
Do you want to hear me beg you to take me back?
I'd gladly do it because
I don't want to fade away.

dunno if this deserves a whole new reply but here goes

first of all im a horizontal bob marley when it comes to standards in general. i dont know what the f**k pride is. i will waste a day smoking pot watching lost before i can be f**ked to get off my ass and do some work. which will of course be gone about in the most laid back way possible and use all the possible shortcuts to shave effort out of that work

so this has always confused me. why do people care so much about tiny s**tty details. because there exists not a single person that actually gives a s**t about if a webpage complies with a code some suit has typed up in his little office to give him something to do, despite what you say. are you really that troubled. everyone else manages to get by everyday without complaining about it. were you born upside down or do you actually care about small inconsistencies in internet documents

yes u know that you seem to think everything should be perfect. f**k it. if thats the case then why havent you invented a cure for cancer. then i will listen to you. where is your cure :(

Opera, Safari and Chrome all got 100/100 on the Acid3 test. Looks like the latest test versions of firefox are going to almost perfect it. Source.

Standards for internet stuff are hard to enforce.

Acid3 is a very small subset of the standards.
The browsers you mentioned (particularly Safari and Opera) were essentially racing to get 100/100, but they used kluges that don't constitute real standards compliance, and certainly don't translate into developers actually being able to use DOM and JS much more than before.

Mozilla and Opera and apple and microsoft would rather spend their time doing something useful rather than supporting some stupid javascript.

Big Browsers are Standards makers not standards takers so if they can't be bothered making TIFF images work then fuck it and fix some bugs.
